ha I was in high school when this came out, and every one was pissed, but I liked the album. kinda funny most people who still talk shit about it like it was yesterday.. haven't heard the music in like a decade, they don't even remember the songs they don't like. and most of em don't even listen to the "good" metallica any more either. listen and enjoy or go to what ever type of music you like. This song is a personal one for me. I can relate to every lyric in this song. The pain that dwells deep within one's soul can be unbearable to live with and you wait for it to sleep but that is all it ever does, is sleep, it never goes away. I have a family member who has hurt me repeatedly and tore me down over and over and over and the pain from that only gets uglier and deeper and there is no escape from the pain so I just wait for it to sleep again...

@Metallicasince90 It's an Ab minor. To get that "surf" effect, push down just a tiny bit on your tremolo bar, and raise it. The are tuned to Eb, so the chord would be like a normal A minor. In standard tuning you could play it barred at the 4th fret (Em shape). Hope that helps.
