HELLO i have an 18.5 twin opposed briggs and i want to enable a rev limiter on it to about 5000 rpm maybe more if i feel i should, i know i have to un govern it , but my question is
how can i make a rev limiter for it i had a basic idea of putting a spring loaded flap on the carb
so it would cut air out when it gets high rpm
but then i saw this coil doing this and saw coils on push mowers do this i wanted the same
It's hard to see the part number on the coil but it looks like the original coil was from a hand held blower 41?? 400 1307. The coil you replaced it with looks like a 1138 400 1300 coil which is correct.. Different governed speeds, different timing. How did a blower coil get on your chainsaw?
I had exactly the same problem with my Oleo Mac 999 chainsaw, the rev limited coil was breaking down, I fitted a new non rev limited coil now it runs like a beast :)
@donyboy73 Actually doing pretty good, but tons to learn yet... Its just part time for me, but more work than i expected, and having all kinds of fun! :) I need more sheds!!! lol
yeah I dont think i would of thought of the coil being the problem...I would of been dinking around with the carb until it wouldnt even idle right LOL...Thanks for the input
Every Digital CDI coil has a "limit" on them, put a tach on it-pull the bar off and pin it and you will see that the coil will hold it at a peak RPM and you can also here the coil cut the spark down to every other stroke rather than every stroke. What happened here was the coil was defective, most likley from heat.
I have never in my life heard of a rev limiter. From the sound, I would have guessed it was a bad carb or adjustment. Maybe a leak. Does anyone know how it works?
@foreverwood1963 usually they limit how high the rpms will go and sometimes they go awry like on this one. a rev limiter is usually to prevent people from over revving and blowing their stuff. a lot of marine equipment has them
@foreverwood1963 its like a rev limiter in a snowmobile but in a snowmobile its in the CDI box not in the coil, I believe it limits how many times it can fire in a second
Stihl is probably using limiters because of the non-adjustable carbs. With the traditional carbs, you used the H adjustment to set your top no load engine RPM.
I think that the sateration time is affected because the coil is bad. It is a frequency problem. ( in my opinion). I don't think that they are rev limited.
it should not have a rev limiter. install it by placing a playing card between the flywheel and the coil, the tighten the srews.if it has spark continually the coil is good.
how do u hook up the magneto/ coil or watever... i got a crappy chainsaw that i took the coil off and saw that a little magnet peice was bent... and now i dont know how to hook it up again to see if the thing still works. btw i tested the spark plug and it works great
no recipt needed as long as its registered. good diagnosis tho! most mechanics wouldve had the entire saw torn to pieces. stihl lately has had an issue with faulty ignitions. great job!

would that make it quit working when ur half way through a tree.
hellraisers36 8 months ago
@hellraisers36 could be anything from the carb to spark issues

@chainsawguy that's what came with it, maybe somebody at the dealer took parts from it??

that sounds cool

To think something so simple as the rev coil can cause more repair time than need be. Interesting.

is ther a rev limiter on a older echo saw from around 2000

Sounded way better with the old coil

i had the same problem on a partener con saw the other day.changed the coil also. ,cured the problem ,built in limiter.

I didn't know it was necesary to have a rev limiter on a chainsaw...i mean, its made for cars and bikes, not for little engines..

@foreverwood1963 The rev. limiters are used on a lot of the newer equipment. (saws, brush cutters, hedge trimmers etc)

oh and its not good to have cylinder cover off while running.... you can overheat the cylinder....

hehehe i am also chainsaw servicer in europe and i do the same thing...playing card, or a company name card will do the job :D:D:D

what kind of saw do you have?
donyboy73 2 years ago
stihl 025 from 1996 i think.. do these have the rev limeters on them that sometimes crap out?
shinyfuzzy 2 years ago
I dident even know there was a rev limiter incorporated into the ignition of chain saws. I wonder how the rev limiter is made.

I didn't either until I worked on this one

that's right

thanks, he never registered the saw so it would have been a pain for me as I am not the owner.
it was also a challenge to diagnose it and the Stihl dealer thought I was out to lunch!

lifetime warranty in the ignition. could have saved u that 90 bucks :)

@backwoodsctryboy STIHL did away with lifetime coil warranty several years ago, very bad marketing mistake
