The problem arose in the Holy Roman Empire (Germany) with Martin Luther's 'Ninety-Five Theses' due to his abhorrence at the Church's practice of the sale of indulgences, and the performance of 'good works' in order to attain salvation. But more or less identical, isn't exactly identical. If religion didn't exist it would just be British v Irish. Religion is just another 'reason' for division.
