@vgbasil Yes! The difference between Yoga & others is that it moves the body according to our human anatomy. It seeks to harmonize the body with the law of nature.
This just goes to show that people are competitive in nature. The only people who would try to hold competitive yoga are the upper middle class, suburbanite, average american, slobs who only do anything for vanity. Yoga is a way of life not some sport. The point is about cleansing your mind body and soul, not showing off how bendy you are. Save that for gymnasts.
@parsha43 I have been living there for quite a while, and sadly most Indians (to) has lost the essence of yoga. You should also have in mind that India is a vast country with over a billion people, there is plenty of things weirder then this.
Yoga is the path to experience your true nature, which is pure being, through your body. Asanas (positions) is only the third step out of seven. But people get caught up in the positions, and think they have reached somewhere. But they are still on step 3.
Yoga is not a way of life...being a yogi is a way of life. Hatha yoga is physical yoga..and its not about cleaning body/mind, its about connecting body and mind. a yoga competition is mainly a damonstration on the benefits of a consistant practice = good for yoga = good for mankind. people who call them slobs doing it for vanity = bad for mankind.
Surinder is a little bit disturbed by the music, no doubt (good music but the rhythm is far too rapid for hatha-yoga), but absolutely fantastic. Namaste.
my friend Denis was participating in this competition. it was in Delhi in 2000. Indian orginisers said to all teams @dont use indian music, only western" why - i dont know. My frien was nat happy from this championship - he told thats to much corruption & people who organising it not practise yoga themselves - they are indian businesmen, not yogis
In this november, in Mexico, one teacher will give a Pop Yoga class (thats the name he choose) in the Encuentro Nacional de Yoga 2008. Its a style in the same mood of this vdo. I think yoga most take care about how do I feel, more than how do I look.

I have to agree with cspace 1234nz as a practitioner of Ashtanga yoga for over 10 years its just an asana exhibition to music

nothing to do with yoga? such a universal expert! I think its awesome and is absolutely positively yoga!

Gymnastics.
It's pretty cool stuff but really has little or nothing to do with yoga.
It is a good representation of how yoga has been bastardised in the west though, this is what people in the west think yoga is for the most part.

Wow. Maybe you should do your yoga, lighten up and stop being such a hater. Lifes to short to be such a miserable, judgmental know-it-all.
This competition is actually being held in India. You should go there and tell them what yoga is supposed to be.

Seriously, why are you going to chastise someone and pass judgement on them for having fun with something they obviously enjoy? what a douchebag

The music is quite rajasic (doesn't bring peace of mind) for a "yoga championship". But thank you anyway, this man is very flexible.
