The only possible connection is through gothic literature's influence on them.

I like this music, though.

I like bands that people would call gothic metal (tristania), as well as goth rock, but they are not related, least of all successive... new goth rock is still being made.

99% of what people call "goth" today has nothing to do with the original genre, actually.
