on my version the thirdperson console command makes the camera look from the side. To get a real thirdperson, type : chase_active 1 and if you type chase_ and browse other commands with TAB starting with "chase_" you will get any focus you want and you can even move the camera, to get for example resident evil 4 look, or on the left side, etc. Its interesting to play like this, if you have any questions respond to this comment i'll answer

and dunno how to open console, alrdy tried " ¨ " (tilde) button but wont budge and also nothing in game menu to enable console

If that doesn't work, then right click on your HL shortcut on the desktop, click properties, then in the "Target:" box it will say something like "C:/sierra/half-life/hl.exe" right at the end add "-console" without quotes. Then start half life from that shortcut and try the keys again.
