  • そうか、矢堀孝一さんのあの感じはリー・リトナーだったのか。

    あ、玉置浩二は結構プリンスだよ。

  • Hey.. hey... Isn´t that Patrice Rushen??? in the piano

  • cooooooooooooooool

  • Equipe fabuleuse ! voila de l'excellente musique ! j'avais à l'époque de la sortie de l'album, relevé toute la partie de batterie ! Extraordinaires HARVEY MASON( batterie) et ANTHONY JACKSON !!!(basse) site didier-dagostino-batteur.fr ET vidéos d'agostino batteur/compositeur sur youtube.

  • I came here intending to watch a few seconds of the song instead i ended up listening to 3 time full length.

  • Pure musical Mastery!

  • great piece by LR....ia that Patrice Rushin on KB??

  • the face that guy makes at 1:13 is funny! hahaha!

  • Stupid good music, but i just can't stop laughing at 1:13

  • LR is like a 500HP car, he has always space to accelerate. One of the top guitar players.

  • who is lady gaga?

  • @elias909antonas Didn't she marry Prince Charles and then divorced him and then ended up in a tragic car accident?

  • I hate any consideration about music only in terms of difficults. The second movement of concert 20 for Piano and Orchestra of Mozart start with a theme very simple but great. What i don't like in this tune is not the linearity of the "obbligato". but monotony of the groove and the persistance of the tonality during solos.

But this is the limit of the fusion music from 80" and later.

  • Ah, you fancy yourself some kind of purist do you. Jaco was a purist, he died in misery. Get help before you become an angry old man shaking his tiny fist at everything.

  • @anastyschoolboy i'd be pretty miserable too if someone was kicking me to death

  • @PuffusMaximus

Indeed. Tragic story and a monumental loss. The poor guy was miserable for awhile leading up to his senseless death .

  • I believe that, although Anthony Jackson and Alphonso Johnson were on the original 1977 album, it was Charles Meeks who played bass on the title cut. The 1977 release also featured Jeff and Mike Porcaro, Ray Parker Jr. and Bill Champlin

  • patrice rushin, harvey mason, ernie watts, and jackson on bass

  • I read lots of comments here. The interaction on this and playing level/standard doesn't get much higher.

Anything is transcribable. There are Coltrane transcriptions with 11 over 2 out there far more difficult to transcribe than this. The facility in playing determines the facility of a musician not the facility to transcribe. That's ears and a these days there are so many slow-downer software types transcribing isn't that tough.

Just enjoy the music - or not. Over analysis kills the music!

  • @andrewatwill Man you have no idea how much that last line rings true for me, I used to doubt I was appreciating the music fully and start trying to analyze it without even having my guitar in my hand, needless to say, after countless headaches and much frustration, I told my brain to shut the fuck up and now I love music again, go me!

  • What are the chords in the intro?

  • good ensemble !!

  • My friend asked me to play this piece on bass for him for his HSC... Save me...

  • i know i may be 17, but i am a big fan of this DVD. It just rocks man!!!

    i especially like the breakdown.

  • i know i may be 17, but i am a big fan of this DVD. It just rocks man!!!

  • JUST ENJOY THE MUSIC !!

  • Dr. Patrice Rushen on Keyboards.

  • harvey mason is killing it on them drums!! I almost wish I was at that show. And of course, gotta love the swing breakdown during the solos ; )

  • Real music is not for everyone.

  • @charliefreak21 What the fuck does that mean?

  • @HendrixcommaMartin Everyone says they love music, but Captain Fingers could be a litmus test to see if they really do.

  • @charliefreak21 You are soooooo right :)

  • @charliefreak21

Nice comment, bravo! I gather from your handle that you are a Steely Dan fan?

  • @anastyschoolboy Yep. Love the Dan.

  • @charliefreak21 Wow. Perfectly said.

  • This is indeed high art of its type of music which is smooth jazz and funk and good smooth jazz and funk at that. As a genre of jazz it has broad appeal. Yes it can all sound somewhat similar to the non fan in the same way that bluegrass all sounds much the same to some people. There is room for all types of music and we should not argue over what is the best because that is the road to nowhere. I am always amazed at the ferocity of the disputes that occur over music on YT. Sad and pointless.

  • @syncopater999

I like your comments but I would like to point out that this was around long before "Smooth Jazz" was a description. We thought of it as an early flavor of fusion. Cheers

  • I believe Overtime wasn't a concert. It was a ''by invitation'' only event. Invitations were sent by the musicians themselves.

  • @ianidinuse True, the folks in the audience are family members and friends. Rit said he mainly wanted to capture what it's like when they sit around and play in house - the audience was secondary.

  • Put in my Favorite Music Videos.

  • Harvey Mason solid!!

  • nice

  • Pat on keys :D

  • Instead of sax I meant clarinet, I must be stupid!

  • @MrMegaFredzeppelin

Right the first time Fred-it is a sax-soprano sax

  • @onthemoveagain Thank you for the correction, now that I look at it you are right,I must be stupid, actually I am not totally familiar with wind instruments.

  • Listen to the guitar, sax, keyboards ,bass and drums all harmonize all at once,Awesome

  • @MrMegaFredzeppelin Zappa would have loved this tightness

  • @Rikk303 I am glad to see that there is still people out there who still love great music, thank you for liking this as well.

  • Great musicians, listen to how tight they are together,Awesome!

  • Good music..

  • Lee Ritenour on guitar, Anthony Jackson on bass, Harvey Mason on drums, Patrice Rushen on piano, Ernie Watts on sax. Can't make out who the percussionist is. All of these cat were on the original recording that came out back in 1977. Great music never dies! I used to use the original recording of this tune when testing out audio equipment because it has all the instrumentation I needed to hear. Awesome video.

  • @MrMartymar13 Percussionist is Steve Foreman originally on th 1977 gig (amd/or ,serveral of the many others.)

  • @MrMartymar13

Alphonso Johnson also played bass on the original. Anthony Jackson was featured prominently on the changes.

  • the immaturity here is astounding. mr. ritenour is one of the amazing guitarists of a couple of generations and was playing with this bassist for i think over 20 years.

have a little respect people. if you don't like the music, DON'T WATCH IT.

  • OMFG everyones fingers

  • damn... watching lee ritenour's making me want to quit playing guitar cuz he's so good....

  • anyone that complains about this is insane...lee ritenour has been puttin work in for YEARS...original captain fingers was 1977 before most of you "experts" were born...LMAO

  • Comment removed

  • Lee Ritenour, Patrice Rushen on keyboards is that Harvey Mason on drums? holla back somebody

  • Anything with Anthony Jackson is great.

Sunderlanding take that shit somewhere else>

  • Is zappa still alive?

  • @jaydeebase65: Yes; he lives under my staircase with a troll and Suzi Cream Cheese. :-)

  • I own CD "Captain Fingers", but this version is pleasantly "modernized"!

  • Old Skool the best Skool!!!

  • Fantastic!!!

  • Amazing...!

  • haha 1.15

  • cool

  • arf, sorry.

  • Thats Patrice Rushen on keyboards!

  • Este video es suverible utilizar audifonos de buena calidad, para podre spreciar muchas cosas q a simple escuchar no se distinguen,

  • best way i can describe this is Frank Zappa on sleeping pills?

  • @HANDBALLDIEHARD I really don't think Frank Zappa should be mentioned in the context of this real musicians,

  • @BadSneakers hey badsmellysneakers when your right your smelly right, this tune reminded me of some silly tune guakamolly and cheese from baby snakes.movie which is kinda funky and jazzy, anyway zappa and lee have different styles bad comment you got me,but still you played yourself saying real musicians-terry bozzio, tommy mars,oh and steve vai are jokes?.Lees ok too.chill.sorry if i spoiled your moment of praise of these music masters supreme ba ba darada da da,oh yea genius?

  • @HANDBALLDIEHARD Hey Bobbie Handballdiehard Brown, do you think you're the coolest guy in town??? lol. Was all over Sheik Yer Bouti, babysnakes and all. My advice to you - NEVER flush a tamPOON! PS, it was a joke...

  • @BadSneakers Zappa is a better musician than any of these clowns. These guys should start a band with Kenny G, talk about cheesy bullshit. Hey Ritenour! Just 'cause you hire some black players doesn't mean any of this bullshit actually has soul. This is some of the most cookie cutter uninspired funk I've ever heard.

  • @Sunderlanding Whoa!. That was a heavy comment and probably uncalled for. And when did you say your disc was going to drop? I'm sure everyone here will be waiting.

  • @bubs2005 Do you demand that all music critics drop thier disks? What kind of retarded logic is that?

  • @Sunderlanding Oh, a bottom feeder. And I don't demand anything except for someone who could back up his comments. I'd have to say "put up or shut the f**k up", trool. That's the logic. And what rag do you spew your worthless venom for? Music critic my ass. Out.

  • @bubs2005 It's simple logic man. The whole idea behind if you can't do it you have no right to critisize is bunk. If I have a valid complaint it's a valid complaint. If you can't come up with a musical counter and instead resort to "put up or shut up" it's your understanding of music that's in question. Besides do you really think cripples have no right to have an opinion on music simply because they can't do it?

  • @Sunderlanding So now we're gonna throw out the "C" card? If you don't like the "cheesy bullshit, 'cause you hire hire some black guys, cookie cutter uninspired funk" then why don't go on over with the metal heads and hip-hop boys and leave everyone alone with your dribble about nothing. And by the way, I've been to your site and it looks like you irritate just about everyone you come in contact with. Get a life, loser.

  • @bubs2005 So just because I think this is cookie cutter funk that makes me a loser? I guess in your world there is no room for another opinion. They have a word for that philosophy you know. At any rate if you really think this cheesy unispired bullshit is actually good music enjoy, and hey if you're looking to discover more music I recomend you start hanging out in elevators and on hold.

  • @Sunderlanding

ironic that most of today's self-proclaimed "artists" would be stuck on hold trying to break this down. chart it? LOL!!!

thanks, I'll take this 'uninspired bullshit' any day of the week, over 90% of the dreck being banged out, or worse, sampling. sampling: clip art ...

i wouldn't say you're a loser, as i don't know you. but labeling this 'funk', i would say without hesitation, that you *are* lost.

  • @JonP1961 Do you really think this is complicated? It wouldn't be hard to chart this shit at all. Hopefully that isn't your musical proof that this is hight art.

Furthermore, talking about clip art, that's exactly what this sounds like. Clip this generic lick on here, clip that one on there. Hey Lee how about developing something that doesn't sound like smooth jazz crap!

  • @Sunderlanding

Do you really think at all when you're reading or are you too busy obsessing on what your (next) reply is going to be? The whole point that it's not complicated at all hat's trained in theory. Thanks for re-enforcing my reply about *most*, though. Hopefully English wasn't your major in college.

Please, though, do point me towards some of your performances. I'd be curious to see if you've developed anything yourself, other than an attitude.

  • @JonP1961 I was replying to your comment about charting this performance. Maybe you don't remember what you wrote? "ironic that most of today's self-proclaimed "artists" would be stuck on hold trying to break this down. chart it? LOL!!!" Sounds to me like your claing this is somehow advanced, or maybe that LOL at the end was some lame attempt to be sarcastic? You really don't make a lot of sense. What is it that makes this so great anyway?

  • @Sunderlanding

ok, either you're too dense, or maybe i was too subtle for you. this is my last attempt to try & explain it to you. do try to keep up: 1. it's not hard to chart. 2. it's not complicated. 3. most of today's 'artists' would have trouble with it. therefore? need a hint? it's a statement about today's "artists". you seem to think that that i've somehow equated complexity with a cool song. that you've come to that (false) conclusion is a problem you have with comprehension.

  • @JonP1961 Do you really think most modern artists would have trouble with this? You must be the one who's dense. Unless of course you're including people like Kary Perry as artists, because I'm pretty sure most artists could play this, and chart this, and have no trouble understanding it. You really think this is beyond Kurt Rosenwinkle and Adam Rogers?

  • @Sunderlanding

You just don't get it. Cats like Kurt Rosenwinkel aren't "self-proclaimed" 'artists.' Kurt is an accomplished professional musician who studied at Berklee and has toured with some heavy hitters. Nice attempt to skirt around what I said. "Artists" was put in quotes for a reason. Either you're just too stupid to read /comprehend what I've actually written, or you're just here to intentionally argue for the sake or arguing. Either way, I'm through with you.

  • @JonP1961 So basically you're saying because Katy Perry can't chart this it's somehow relevant? I don't get what you're point is. Most good musicians can chart this, so it's not impressive to real players, but because some self-proclaimed "artists" can't chart it, that makes it good? Talk about dancing around the issue. Why do some so called "artists" have anything to do with this? If you're going on what they can and can't chart suddenly Green Day becomes impressive.

  • @bubs2005 Go on lad..nice informed statement!! Ritenour is the dogs!!!!!!

  • @bubs2005 Is insulting metal and hip hop really necessary? Some of us have diverse tastes, and can appreciate all of it, including this.

  • @Sunderlanding When's your amazing album coming out, would love to hear it. Fucking wanker doesn't know shit about music lol

  • @MindstormRecs When's yours? Fucking hipocrite.

  • @Sunderlanding

In reading your year old remark today I concluded that your ears must be made of tin or cloth or something. True, Zappa will be remembered as one of the greatest musicians of our time but these individuals belong to a fraternity of the greatest session players ever. You are showing musical ignorance with your comment.

  • @anastyschoolboy Yes these guys would be great session musicians, because they sure as hell can't do anything creative on thier own.

  • @Sunderlanding

Not sure of your background (or age) but you sound pretty young and musically inexperienced. Could be wrong about the first but I bet I am right about the second. You may not like what these musicians do, it may not be a musical flavour that moves you but to blast them as you do shows a pretty fair lack of musical understanding.

  • @anastyschoolboy It's not that I don't like this. I just prefer it when it was played by the people who created it, and not a bunch of nerdy fucks who take out all the fire and replace it with cheese. Funk was great in it's conception, but I don't want to hear a bunch of egos wank out on something that used to be cool.

  • @Sunderlanding

To whom do you refer when you say "...the people who created it" With the exception of Anthony Jackson on Bass, those players ARE the original line-up from 1977 and Ritenour wrote that song. (Charles Meeks played bass on the original.)

Also, could you cite an example of non-nerdy, non-ego, non-wanker etc. creative individuals that you DO like.

  • @anastyschoolboy Sure this song, but not this style of music. This is just a lame funk song written by some dorky white dude because he thought it would make him cooler. I'm talking about the people who started funk music, not the asshole who wrote this shit song.

  • @Sunderlanding fine if u think the tune is lame, i dont, but im not gonna argue if u think its corny or some shit, but one thing u cant deny, u dont see funk/ smooth jazz guitar players playing that kinda of solo of chops, interesting harmonies, different notes, admit hes as great as gambale just in a different spectrum of jazz

  • @paisteguy799 I'll give you the chops, but the harmonies and notes aren't that impressive, and at the end of the day chops don't mean much if you don't put them to use. Also Gambale sucks.

  • @Sunderlanding i just assumed someone who thinks this guy cant play likes guys who are more profficient with technique and jazz shredding...one thing ur forgetting is lee tops most guitar players in terms of groove..white guys dont usually have a pocket that he does

  • @paisteguy799 If you think he has groove I really feel sorry for you.

  • dont forget about the rest of the band and the master drummer harvey mason.

  • One of my all time favorite albums and song. There was a direct to disc album out in the 70's where they played this song at a blazing pace. Original bassist was Alphonso Johnson. Harvey Mason is oh so funky. Thanks for posting.

  • Actually, both Alphonso Johnson AND Anthony Jackson played on this track if I remember correctly. At some point in the track you can hear when it goes from Al to Anthony.

  • My fault, I was talking about the Captain Fingers LP. I think you're talking about the Gentle Thoughts LP which came out like right after. My mistake, you're right on that one.

  • When he first recorded this in 77 he must have been early 20's. I hear you big time. I have played along with the album for almost 30 years and realized all along that this guy was born with something really special. Something I was not born with =) Oh well, at least I got the ability to appreciate this master!

  • Rit was born in 1954, so, yes, he was 23!

  • This is the Best!!!

  • Nope, Anthony Jackson is the bassist on Overtime and Gentle Thoughts, but Overtime also has additionally Melvin Davis, and Dave Carpenter on bass.

  • @tungmobi RIP Dave Carpenter.

  • Some more info: This is from the Overtime DVD, which is fantastic. The lineup on Captain Fingers is quite possibly the exact lineup on the Gentle Thoughts (1977) version of that song. If you haven't heard that version, you're missing out!

  • Different bassist, I believe.

  • Anthony Jackson: He created the 6 strings bass back in the 70's. I'm playing a song from him at university... So hard:P

  • what's the name of the bassist?

  • anthony Jackson I think

  • lee ritenour is one of my favorite guitarists.i try to play along but even with my 40 years playing this is tough.thanks for posting.i have this on lp.

  • AWESOME
