2012 wins. People see disaster movies for the special effects, not the plot. That is why 2012 is the best disaster movie. I'm not saying it's best movie overall.
Ok, what the eff is it that's coming down from the top of the picture at around 1:31? It looks like a cellphone falling in slow motion. I've been wondering about this ever since I saw Independence Day.
Now you have Godzilla's return in 2012... that's what REALLY the Mayans were predicting... and its not Roland Emmerich's Chicken/Iguana-ShittyZilla either... Humanity will have no chance this time when Gojira returns... XD
Some very impressive footage. I liked Deep Impact and Armageddon, Knowing was a smart film, Day After Tomorrow and 2012 were both dumb.Nothing dumber then The Swarm. Posidon and Towering Inferno both had a lot going for them. Enjoyed Independence Day. Volcano and Earthquake were both so so .
In all Disaster movies Ive seen, I have yet to see The Leaning Tower of Pisa collaspe, am I wrong or is there a movie out there, with the destruction of this tower?
@matthe104 Naw, I love 2012. But they are both good and I especially like how they're both done by the same director, Ronald Emmerich. Yeah! He knows his disasters! Let's just not mention Godzilla though. : P
FANTASTIC! Excellent clips and an excellent commentary. Wonderful Job!
-They did mention the 70s disaster films but they should have mentioned the Airport movies at that time. There were three or four of them, I think!
-But I will agree with 2012 - I don't know how it can be replaced, unless something BIGGER comes along. I have an old sci-fi book called Catastrophes, and it's one of my favorites. It has stories including destruction of the galaxy and the entire universe.
Even though this isn't a disaster movie...I thought AvP's ending disaster scence was epic. I thought it was cool how they made a real model of the town being destroyed by a massive bomb earthquake
One funny thing is that when she says that Independence Day replaced practical effects with CGI, they show a non-CGI effect. (That exploding tower was a real model).
@IanEduardoMeneses It IS amazing. Check it out! But man, it was so much better on the big screen when you could FEEL the rumble of the earthquake in your chest. Awesome!
Anyone else notice the GARGOILS or however you spell it @2:40 minutes. Now what do you see in the DENVER AIRPORT? Gargoil in a suitcase jumping out. DO THE MATH PEOPLE!!
The ending of On the Beach (1959 movie) was the most depressing and poignant disaster movie I've ever seen. Sure, it was slow and boring but the last scenes of the ppl lining up to get their suicide pills cos a radiation cloud is drifting down from the nrth hemisphere is spooky. The US sub leaving to attempt to get back to the US is pointless and depressing. That's why I avoided The Road recently. But I do like a disaster movie that starts AFTER the disaster.
@portantwas That was excellent! (And bleah on the remake.) That's a genre that's never included in Disaster Movies but there are some superb ones: Nuclear War. The Day After and Threads, By Dawn's Early Light, the War Game (Not to be confused with Wargames.)
Threads, I think, is one of the greatest disaster movies ever. Realistic, powerful, and it will make you bawl your eyes out. It's nuclear war in Britain, check it out!
@TheRadical42 I remember Threads! Very realistic. Was a big TV event even here in Australia. Forgotten most of it but will check it out again (if my nerves can take the strain). Same with others - I remember The Day After as well.
Funny they didn't mention any of the Virus movies (although many are crap).

Deep impact+armageddon+day after tommorow+knowing= best disaster movie ever!
janrex087 6 months ago
i found the mindfuckiness of Knowing and the effects of 2012, but i'm a ravenclaw at heart, so i sunk more into Day after Tomorrow
my dad's favorite was Independence, but for my generation's effects, it was rather blasse(though probably the only one with much of a plot)

No. 2012 illustrates the end of the world according to Rolan Emmerich. Not the the Mayan Calendar.
