Having played the part of Joe during a middle school performance several years ago, I can attest to the near impossibility of doing a good job with this piece. The actor here has pulled it off -- wow! I was most impressed by two things:
1. Instead of being bound to the monotonous music, the actor merely approximated the beat; the pianist followed him, instead of vice versa -- an unorthodox move that is entirely in character.
2. The two younger actors recreating the waltz was a nice flourish.
when he is singing, he doesn't act. I have been having the same problem with Joe.

his pacing is way to fast. some of the seriousness of what he says is lost cause of how fast he says.
