Townes is a magnificent songwriter. Sorry to say, I'm not a fan of this one. Just doesn't grab hold, but i guess they can't all be doozies. Still a great video!
@peboo353 this one was on his first album. Think about that in context, it was 1968 and everyone was listening to dylan and the beatles. He wrote this...
Thanks to YouTube, I just discovered TVZ less than 2 months ago (and his late friend Blaze Foley, as well). I've since purchased 4 TVZ CD's and 2 of Blaze's. I've watched virtually everything of Townes' posted here. I must thank you for posting the "Private Concert" videos. I feel Townes' singing those 13 songs reflects his most heartfelt performances, his emotional peak. While the bell clarity of his youthful voice had vanished, so to, had the rushed delivery.
@deborahkauffman09 unfortunatley at this point in townes' life he was so bad in alcohol that there is no way hes sober. he would be having d.t. but proves even more his gift. RIP TOWNES
its interesting how he recorded all these songs, in what I think was a hotel, by himself, as if he felt the need to document them. He recording career was spotty during his life, but after his death so much has been released. With his constant references to dying, I wonder if he knew he wasnt gonna last long
@Joeyland - check out the documentary "Be Here To Love Me". He mentions that his life will run out before his work does. It's also a very good glimpse into his life, family, struggles, work, etc...

@Joeyland The way he lived he couldn't help but know he was on a fairly short trip. Drugs, alcohol, and life on the road ARE the road to an early grave and it's not like he made Rolling Stones money with which to pull himself back from the brink when things really got narrow. A tragedy, though probably part and parcel of the whole package, y'know? He wrote about living hard, which he himself did, resulting in more self-destructive behavior designed to kill the pain. A vicious circle.
I love Keen, Guy Clark and other singer songwriters in this style but have to say I had never listened to TVZ until today. Blown away for sure!! Glad I am not drinking or I'd be crying.
All my fellow Townes Van Zandt fans should buy the DVD titled "BE HERE TO LOVE ME". It is so interesting and discusses Townes Van Zandt as an artist, a father and a man who really dealt with alcohol and shock therapy issues Very compelling. The music he created was so intriguing, sad and beautiful.
best damn songwriter ever...better than any dylan...thomas or zimmerman, and i"ll stand on my coffee table in my cowboy boots and yell it at the world! this achs me to my bones.
being a youngster in the eighties in and out of the dance halls of east texas, its a shame i never got a chance to see townes play.
goosebumps from the song (first time I ve heard it) & nearly a tear, cos he didn't remember the name of the next song. Fantastic songwriter, sadly missed.
Do you think "Our Mother the Mountain" is about the devil? Just curious about what you think. It's such a powerful tune; his lyrics are beyond beyond in that tune and in this one. He's a poetic song-writing god.
Funny you should ask, I've been listening to that song all day. I don't think it is as simple as being about the devil, but it definitely has a feel of evil. It is about a temptress but at the same time it is much more than that. The lyrics are amazing and the characters are pretty complex.
amazing. had only seen imagery put to this song and didnt think footage even exsted of him performing this. Nice find! where did it come from if you dont mind me asking?
I always felt like this was his autobiography - Townes telling Townes' story. What an amazing writer. I'm not sure he ever really took to this world, but we sure do miss him.
Like all true prophets(Jesus included) I think Townes saw himself as the vehicle of the message, not the message itself-thats probably why he didn't always enjoy the personal attention.
Love this song.....................

Great lyrics, but Dylan should be credited with the music, listen to North Country Blues.

I first heard the Alela Diane/Alina Hardin version. Nice to know they tipped their proverbial hats to a master of soulful folk/country :)

This song is amazing. When we were in school are studying poetry, like Dickinson's, we should also have read Townes'.
Of course, his material might not be PC for our schools. It's a shame.

@shortcircuit420 steve earle didn't write this. he just covered it on the townes cover album that came out earlier this year.

@shortcircuit420 Steve was Towne's friend and even named his son after Townes, but Townes wrote this one.

Rake is my favorite TVZ song. My favorite line "time was like water but i was the sea" this dude was very special.
Its hard for me to get my mind around people Like him or Dylan or Lennon. Something bigger going on maybe.
Maybe the insulin shock therapy he got when he was young triggered something we cant quite understand yet.
bjl000 2 years ago 4
he was special, but i don't think the shock therapy did him any good. gave him some more pain to deal with maybe, didn't knock anything loose though
