  • I was at that concert ! Albuquerque was not the same after. Frank and his guys totally blew away the audience. An amazing group of virtuosos on their instruments. As far as the "Jazz Discharge Party Hats", my pal who was in the band, and was there, told me the story years later. It happened at the Hilton Inn where they were staying.

  • It's nice to see faces!

  • BELEZA!!!! DE SOM.

  • 6 days later in Tulsa , Oklahoma my life finally began it's journey that still remains today

and to have been at the show where "Hog Heaven" was recorded made it even better

so many memories , Thank you Frank R.I.P

  • Brilliant quality. Thanx a bunch for this. R.I P The Indian.

  • WHAT A VERSION!!

  • Those long silences must mean the ZFT is getting ready to release more new stuff from the vault.

    They better be!!!!

or maybe there's nothing new left

  • @Rajhoul According to the ZPZ, there's more in the vault than THEY might be able to release in their lifetime which is extremely promising :)

  • Once upon a time... it was in Albquerque, New Mexico...There were these girls that worked at the college, they were really cool... they thought so anyway...

I wonder if this tour was the inspiration for "Jazz Discharge Party Hats".

    Thanks for posting!!

  • @Syncroincity - Yes, as a matter of fact, it was on this very evening that the events described in "Jazz Discharge Party Hats" took place.

  • @Softcorps Went to Zappa Plays Zappa in Albuquerque in '07 felt Frank's presence there just a bit...

  • @Softcorps Are you sure it was this night?

  • @labbyluver - Yes, I am absolutely positive that it was "this night."

  • @Softcorps I don't remember you there.

  • @labbyluver - I was there. Obviously.

  • I hate it that there are less artists like this. You only have thos lady gaga and shit. That's no music, but this is.

  • @Twitclod You have good music. It's just all underground now-a-days. Pop culture has killed the "main stream" music

  • ZAPPA ist einfach COOL

  • @1zappacadabra stimmt

  • ZAPPA ist einfach COOL

  • Johnson Gym!! Woah.....I never knew they had concerts there back in the day

  • @anniedawg25 Oh, yes, there were a lot of concerts at Johnson Gym.

  • not afraid to try any style of music-saw at birmingham u.k.-1988.unbelievable! why cant more bands be this diverse.

  • I'm sure that you're aware that Dweezil Zappa is out playing his father's music with his band, "Zappa Plays Zappa." If they're playing anywhere even remotely close to you, go see them. You will NOT be disappointed.

  • Saw this lineup in Toronto Nov,11/1980. Great show even without the 6 hits of acid wooooohooooo.Got the stub and brain damage to prove it. R.I.P. Frank and Jimmy.

  • OMG!!! I was there! never thought I would see this. Thank you!

  • I saw this very band in Dallas that year. Amazed me how Zappa could change musicians yet still produce the same top quality music.

  • Oh the irony. Well he proved his point, and I don't think this is accidental, that if they are gonna censor rock, they better censor all music, country in particular.

  • Arthur Barrow and Vinnie Colaiuta, my favourite Zappa rhythm section!

  • Thanks for bringing me back in time. I was 15 and my bro was 12 and we were at this very show. It is still one of the greatest concerts I've ever seen.

  • I was at this show! I was 12 years old and after the show my brother and his friend and I waiting at the backstage entrance and we all got Frank's autograph. In fact, on the back of that very ticket stub shown at the beginning of the clip! I could not believe I was standing before the Man while he signed my ticket. I still have it too. YouTube rocks. Softcorps, thank you for bringing back my past in such a fond way.

  • I was so totally there. I got Zappa's Autograph. great show. I teach in the Town where Jiimmy Carl Black lived during his younger life, Anthony, NM

  • Get real softcorps...everything is for sale if the price is right.

  • Seriously, it's not for sale. While Frank personally gave permission for this recording to be made, he certainly did not give up the rights to the musical compositions or the performance itself, therefore, it isn't entirely mine to sell. Regardless, any sale would have to be approved by the Zappa Family Trust and that's not likely to happen.

  • Is this show for sale? I love to have a copy of the whole show.Where can I get it?

  • This is all the video of the show that exists and it is not for sale.

  • Ok,Thanks

  • I went to several concerts in Johnson Gym. Horrible acoustics!

  • Being a concert sound engineer myself, I would generally agree about the acoustics at Johnson Gym. However, Frank's audio engineer mixed the best sound I have ever heard there at this show and the one a year later. I actually learned a lot from him.

  • Thanks for posting this clip. Brilliant!

  • that is without a doubt THE best Zappa line-up EVER! Enough said.

  • Ike has got such an amazing voice, definatley one of my favourite singers with Zappa!

  • Wow great rare video! thanks for posting. Not enough video of the band released with Vinny in it.

  • RIP franky

  • Fantastic!

And Vinnie KILLING IT on the drums!! I've never heard shit like that on a country song...

Interesting to see Vinnie playing matched grip with double basses.

  • These guys must have had so much fun making albums and performing. The good ole days.

  • Enjoy it now. I'm sure Gail will have it removed soon...

  • I'm not sure about that. Frank gave permission to videotape this portion of the show for broadcast (a fact confirmed by Jimmy Carl Black in an interview before his passing.) I personally told Dweezil about this video and I assume that Gail knows about it, too.

  • is it just me...or is how frank holds his cigarettes in his guitar extremely bad ass?

  • Wasn't this also Steve Vai's first show ever with Frank ?

  • This show was part of the "Crush All Boxes" tour and it was certainly Steve Vai's first tour with Frank. I'm not sure if it was his first show with Frank. Perhaps someone should ask him.

  • I saw Zappa the first time in 1980 in Dallas. I coulda swore Vai was with him. Am I wrong? Oh, that was the BEST concert I've ever seen. Zappa had music dialed. NOBODY did it better!

  • Vai is in this vid. That's him at 5:25 - 5:37.

  • RIP jimmy. nicest guy that's jimmy with his wife at the end of the harder than you husband scene. i love ike willis, he's wickedly cool. project/object also rules. RIP frank. nice post

  • Jimmy Carl Black was one of the original Mothers of Invention wasn't he? Great video, thanks!

  • Yes, he was the drummer in the Mothers of Invention. In fact, it was kind of his band before Frank joined.

  • thanks softcorps, it;s really a sad thing to hear that it was just this short video ,anyways,, it was worth to listen and see it. Please check out Jon Larsen CD The Jimmy Carl Black Story. Great music and a insightful interview with JCB just before he passed away.Adios. Brandao

PS : Please also, check out The Central Scrutnizer Band from my country, all the best.

  • I'll check it out.

  • we want the whole show, please post it. Thanks, Zappa fan

  • This 8 minute 22 second clip is all the video footage that was shot at this show. I'd like to have the whole show, too, but this is all that Frank allowed to be shot. It was for a local news story about Jimmy Carl Black who lived here in Albuquerque at the time.

  • yes. i too wanna know where this stuff comes from. thank you for posting it

  • That stage looks like the stage they used on Baby Snakes, is it???

  • John this is so great.!.....i will take the credit for Julian having a favorite Zappa solo @ 13..

  • OMG!!!! MUST HAVE!!!!!!!

  • Yeah great!!!

Where does all this stuff come from? Good Lobna!

  • Ahhh - ok. Then thank you very much for sharing. You know here in Germany it´s not so easy to get that Zappa stuff on video.

  • Where can I find these recording . What´s the name of the DVD or VHS.

    RIP Jimmy and Frank!

  • rest in peace frank and jim

  • thanks for sharing, man ;-)

  • RIP the Indian of the group..

  • WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!

  • wow, my hs graduation was in this same building....awesome upload!

  • Sadly, Jimmy Carl Black has passed away from cancer at his home in Germany on November 1, 2008 at 11pm. RIP, Jimmy.

  • One of my favorites! Get well soon JCB!!
