  • My granny's uncle fought in Salonika in 1915-18. He spent his time being bombed, shot and treated in hospital. He survived but the influenza got him in October.

This song is deceptively upbeat. RIP

  • Greetings form a Salonika man now living in Cork :)

down with the orangemen and blueshirts, up with the rebell county! hehe

  • Oh, I love this song, 'cos... I am from Salonica :P Greetings from Greece, me irish friends, thanks a lot!!!

  • A classic

  • ? strange

  • this song talks about my hometown,Salonika ! I'm so happily surprised !

  • Ronnie:

We miss you; however, thank Christ we still have your music !

  • I always listened to the vanguard, The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. I finally lsistened to the Dubliners, Luke Kelly and Ronnie Drew who are impossible to beat. I'm sorry that they passed on; however, GOD BLESS, we have their music !

  • Are there any Irish groups in Ireland today that sing and create as much exictement as The Dubliners, The Clancy Brothers & Tommmy Makem, and The Wolf Tones?

  • Salonika is my city!!!!!!!! hahaha..co-capital of Greece :D

  • Greece, the land of legends, giants, music, and dance! I can't say enough about it !

    Salute !

  • indeed hehehe lol :)

  • One of the first books that I ever read was, "The Iliad & The Odessy". No one stood taller than did Odysseus. Homer, my boy you couldn't have done better" !

  • :DDD

  • Anyone heard Crowley from Cork`s version, really brilliant.

  • Ronnie`s oul sandpaper voice was made for this song.

  • Someone, a writer, I don't know his name (sorry for that!), compared Ronnie's voice as "The sound of a coke being crushed under a door". Ronnie, also, said about his voice "whether it's a blessing or a curse, but I've been getting away with it for a long time now". LONG LIVE THE DUBLINERS!

  • Come on now, give Ronnie his due! A fine job!

  • To me, the first line just never sounds natural when it is sung by a man.

  • Ja ! You're right.

  • Ronnie was a 24K singer. Here's to you Ronnie -- you're were first class Eire.

  • Right on, Kelly!

  • luke would have done this song so much better!

  • Luke would have done ANY song so much better. I enjoy listening to Ronnie (and I have realized he is not your favorite, Kelly) but given my druthers, it would definitely be Luke all the way every day...and it mostly is actually

  • Roonie had a unique voice. I've always liked his graveled voice. He could belt out a tune better than most. Kelly was also unique. The two, as well as the Dubs, were impossible to beat.
