  • @Spooninthebox911

Andy Astor was a Programmer and a Designer at Shiny Entertainment and Planet Moon Studios. After working on Giants: Citizen Kabuto for three years, he died from a battle with cancer. :(

  • does anyone can name the songs in this vid please? txs!

  • GROOVY!

  • you can,t beat the classics

  • is that an upgrade from a train wreck?

  • what a plane wreck.

  • Nine Inch Nails

  • i kept staring at ewj being played at various points in the background...

  • David Perry, father of earthworm jim, is a pro.

  • @Xecutionner2K ...then what does that make Doug TenNaple...the mother?????

  • @misterite

    exactly, sir.

  • @misterite *TenNapel

  • @misterite *TenNapel

  • @misterite I think it should be vice versa

Doug TenNapel: Father (character and story creator)

David Perry: Male Mother? (game design)

  • i love earthworm jim so thanks for the video

  • man the early 90s video productions like this were so in your face. trying to be hip i guess. this is a classic game tho

  • @klaybush sorry, didn't mean to "get in your face"

  • @misterite uh i still like the video, just commenting on the culture.

  • @klaybush EXTREEEEEEEM!

  • you just cannot find rare old videos like this anymore.

I wanted to know how they make 16-bit games anyway, like the sega genesis.

  • Wow Psy-crow's bug claw vehicle and the prelim peter puppy looked awesome.

  • Some of the Levels in this documentary aren´t in the final version, very interesting :) And some of the Levels had a slightly different background in this video, like Level 5.

  • Great work, really love the editing. Looks very professional Thumbs Up!

  • back then...making games was hard...imagine what creating for the MW2 noobs of today is like.

  • i came to the conclusion that anything british people create turns to gold, not trying to offend americans

  • @doghartdon

Doug (the guy who created EWJ) was born in the US...not trying to offend the British ;)

  • @misterite hey misterite i was confused about earthworm jim 3D i thought shiny owned him and interplay. and the only time earthworm jim was good at interplay was clay fighter 63

  • @jjman65 Interplay was the publisher for EWJ. EWJ was developed by Shiny. The original was made by a group of individuals that do not work together anymore. Unfortunately we will most likely never see another EWJ as good as the first cause every subsequent one was made by some other team that clearly dosn't have what that original team had...Doug Tenaple!

  • @misterite tsk just like crash bandicoot and spyro the dragon at universal interactive.

  • @misterite Part 2 didn't use the orginal team? Playing the game on my iphone. Holds up much better then most classic games.

  • bet we will see Jim in one of the upcoming smash brothers . .

  • They don't make videos like these anymore.

  • John Denver!!!!!! Man seeing this video is like super 90's ..Earthworm Jim was so bad ass for its time!! I still love that game...still havent beaten it!!!!

  • I too miss the 90s both in music and videogames. The 2d Sidescrolling action and simplicity in graphics made them great. Say what you will. There would be no Halos or Call of Dutys if it wasnt for this stuff. Earthworm Jim, Vectorman and Boogerman were classics. Can't wait for Sonic 4 on wiiware.

  • I miss 90's video game marketing and all of its peyote induced awesomeness.

  • Wow! There's a lot of levels not in the release version!

  • I said lot of ''MISSING levels'' in the retail version.

  • man I can't wait four earthworm jim 4 and clayfighter wii by interplay!!

  • are heavy iron going to make more spongebob games?

  • I hope so ;)

  • hey misterite if you get to make another spongebob game could it be E10+ or TEEN. just asking.

  • Did I just take some acid?

  • wow look at these guys and the whole atmosphere.i guess that explains a lot doesnt it? :)

  • Trippy...

  • GROOVY

  • WTF???!!

John Denver at the beggining? why?

  • why not? we tried to make intros to our videos that would baffle the intended viewer. Like the MDK one...show crap 16 bit graphics and then blow out to the next gen graphics...classic bait and switch.

  • I love this video, but at the same time it really really bothers me that there could've been 2 more fantastic looking levels to my favorite videogame of all time, and i'll never get to know anything about them other than like 10 seconds of footage.

  • GROOVE

is the best video game of sega genesis ever!

sauronmanfavs, yes yes yes super smash bros needs jim :))))))))))

    COME BACK JIM!

  • after Hunk my favorite videogame character

    the art style is awesome

  • awesome vid; EJ 1 & 2 were great games. also liked the use of a NIN track at 4:30

  • i liked the puppy level the most

  • what is the music starting at 2:00?

  • us3 - Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)

  • appreciated!

  • earthworm jim in smash brothers please xD

  • Is it just me or it is IMPOSSIBLE to finish this game?! Love it, though!

  • UUUUUUUU2222222222222

  • Oh god, the video effects.

    It's like I'm back in the 90's!

  • Very interesting!! you have something of the music?

  • is there a way to download this as a regular movie file?

  • woow !! Mike Dietz, Doug TenNapel and Ed Schofield you are my heroes!!!

  • Nine Inch Nails!

  • what programs did they use?

  • brilliant man! i love this game, infact, it's my favorite game and this is an awesome documentary, thanks for sharing!

  • When do we get to see Earthworm Jim the Movie!!!???

  • this game is epic

  • I can't find the series anywhere in the net. Every vid is deleted. Somebody can help ;>?

  • Very well made.

  • My irne lent me his snes yesterday, and it has EWJ it rocks!

  • i downloaded the megadrive version on my wii last night GROOVY and remember cow launched

  • Awsom Deud Awwsome!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hey do you work for Shiny or just made the vid?? because it rocks XD

  • I used to work there in the 90's

  • That's pretty hard to believe... but I don't want to just call you a liar and risk being wrong. So prove it man. I'm in college for a major in game design and could use some advice.

  • Prove what???

  • That I made this vid...why should I prove anything? Anyways, someone had to make it and that person was me...just look at my other vids and you will see I have made promos for a number of early Shiny games.

  • That you worked at Shiny

  • the best old school characters are earth worm jim and toejam and earl

  • I have the Super Nes version.. GRooovy

  • Dude thank you ! ! ! ! Earth worm jim is a classic ! A child hood blessing for me ! This video is sweet ! I finally get to see the faces responsible for such an incredible game.

  • Nice work on the soundtrack.

Especially good to hear "Forkboy" from LARD at the end there!

I played the hell out of these games.

  • Yeah, I was kinda raised on KROQ.

Thanks everyone for all the feedback. I'm proud of the vids I have made and am happy that they are recieved well. Youtube is VERY cool. These vids just sat on my shelf till I had a chance to share them with you.

  • 2 Beastie Boys songs, NIN, it was a kickass soundtrack.

  • Seizure inducing...

But who cares, because if you look carefully at 6:10-6:27, mainly at 6:15-6:17, you can see a level unlike any in the series, with Psycrow biting at your ankles!

  • It's really cool to get this insight into the game's production, and very interesting to see Doug TenNapel and Mike Dietz before they went on to creating The Neverhood, a favorite title of mine :)

  • I still work with Mike at Heavy Iron

  • This reply is coming quite late--but that's awesome that you work with him. I exchanged e-mails with him briefly some years ago and he seems like a pretty cool guy and a very good animator. How are things at Heavy Iron?

  • Wonderful, we just shipped our latest Sponge Bob game and are on to bigger and better things. In fact I need to post some vids I made here at HI. check back for updates and thanks for watching!

  • is tere going to be a new spongebob game made by heavy iron.

  • Man, you can just see the energy and creativity these guys wanted to put into the game, and you could tell by playing the finished product. You barely feel that anymore. Thanks for making this. I have hopes of being a game designer someday and this gives me more insight into one of my all time favorite series.

Traditional 2D animation. I hope that stuff never dies.

  • @SestrenNK I hope that stuff never dies because Jim obviously is dead.

  • @Mysterious0Bob Not content with Jim HD, I gather?

  • i kinda like the original energy atom because it is slower and it has a few more electrons. boy, i love this game, oh, where you the camera man or did you help out with "shiny entertianment" and "playmates"?

  • I shot, edited and did all the effects in that video. I worked at Shiny which was in Laguna Beach at the time. I have a few more shiny videos. Just click on my name to see them.

  • ....yeah, It was meant to be more of a sizzle piece than an tru documentary. Thanks for watching. :)

  • That gave a slight bit more insight into the development of one of my favourite games of all time.

  • yeah, It was meant to be more of a sizzle piece than an tru documentary. Thanks for watching.

  • i like "level 5" because you guys made it creepy and cool at the same time wich makes it fun. say, how do u get to "Who Turned Out the Light?"?

  • not sure, I haven't played that game for at least 8 years.

  • There's a big black panel with two rows of red lights in the upper side of the level, towards the left, IIRC. All you have to do is jump into it, and you're there.

  • Thanks alot man! i got there when i was a kid once, but after that i pretty much forgot it...

  • nice video...

  • hey misterite, how many beta levels were there and what were their names and what were they like? please reply if u can. thanks.

  • Dood, that was VERY long ago. I was their company internal sizzle video guy. I hella loved the games and played them, but in no way did I document the unpublished levels. Even if i did, I really couldn't talk about it here. Sorry to disappoint.

  • na its ok. it was a pretty fun game. wut was your favourte level?

  • The submarine level was pretty fun. "Heck" always frustrated me.

  • Huh, we must be polar opposites. Heck never really frustrated me all that much, but man, Tube Race can go take a long walk off a short pier. Extremely frustrating level, that one - either I go too slow and run out of air, or go too fast and crash too many times. (Down the Tubes prior to it, however, was awesome.)

Interested in that snot level you can see Psy-Crow fighting Jim in at the end, but you've already said you wouldn't be able to comment, so... thanks for sharing, though!

  • also, i want some proof you worked for shiny, thats all

  • Dood, I made this video! and tell me why I should give proof to someone that is so disrespectful. Stop being such a curmudgeon or I'll remove all your comments.

  • Great video Btw - very nostalgic. Good job! :)

  • Wow, so many beta levels

  • The old earth worm jims were awesome! (the first 2)

However, earth worm jim 64 was kind of gay...

  • you're gay

earthworm jim 3D was made by rockstar

  • No it wasn't...it was dev'd by Vis and distributed by Interplay....and it STILL sucked!

  • watch the opening to earthworm jim 3D

  • I didn't ask who made it, you nutjob.

I said I didn't like it, and I'm gay for that?

  • yes :P

  • Rockstar DID NOT "make" EWJ3D.

Interplay published the PC vers while Rockstar (take 2 games) published the 64 version. None the less Vis developed the game. I should know, I was working at shiny during that time. No one there really liked the game while it was being dev'd. Also, I had left Shiny before it's release so I did not know about the Rockstar publishing.

  • BULL SHIT

  • Yup. Not sure why Rockstar published EWJ 3D for the N64, but they did. They didn't develop it.

  • PUBLISH

    thats what i ment

  • ... So? EWJ3D sucked.

  • Does anyone else get the feeling that Doug TenNapel is gay? No disrespect towards the guy or anything, i think he's cool, but he comes off as gay to me.

  • Like the man says, Doug's not gay....the 64 version of EWJ is!

  • No, i meant "gay" as in homosexual. Does anyone else think he is? I mean, just listen to the way he talks, look at how he moves, and look at his facial and bodily expressions.

  • I think you're gay for checking him out so closely :P ha-ha, just kidding. As a friend and ex coworker of Doug I can tell you that he may be flamboyant in nature but is in no way a homosexual. He is happily married with children. Just read what you call "gay" as overzealous creativity.

  • Many gay men are married and have children, also, he's a christian, christianity says homosexuality is a sin, so he obviously denies it to dis-commit the sin and do what he thinks is "right", just listen to his laugh, he has a high pitched "tee hee hee" laugh. I honestly think he's gay, but has christian beliefs and chooses not to act on his feelings and go along with what is said in the bible.

  • WOW, I ain't even gonna touch that one.

  • Stop making love to sonic plushes you faggot

  • Why the hostility...I'm just defending a friend.

  • Haha, awesome. Really nineties-ish too!

Seems they left out tons of stuff in the final game. Also, I'm always been puzzled about that "cel to sprite" technique; I don't think that can be automated!

  • Was that a beta level at 6:15?

  • To bad that fire effect wasnt in the Final "What the Heck" and what was up with up with that Psycrow level? was that only on the sega? Or was it udone stuff to?

  • grat making of!!! ....really awsome!!,

by the way I would like to know how many people worked in Earth Worm Jim ??...and how many people was the common number in the 16 bit generation to create a game???

and also , like the question before , the number of people (the standard) by project on the 32/64 generation...

  • i'm gonna miss shiny's cartoon games.... earthworm jim was the shit!

  • He's coming back...a new game (EWJ 4),cartoon series and a featre length film!

  • You go Jim!

  • what's that song at the end?

  • It's Forkboy by Lard

  • Who is Post Linear Media?

  • Post Linear Media was the buisness name I worked under.

  • R.I.P. Andy :(

  • Although it would be better if the original team would work on it, some are no longer with us though.

  • It's not the original team they need, Doug Tennapel could get a great Earthworm Jim game created with other teams.

  • Awesome. <(^_^)^

Jimmy really needs to make a comeback... Preferably with the original team too. =P
