Andy Astor was a Programmer and a Designer at Shiny Entertainment and Planet Moon Studios. After working on Giants: Citizen Kabuto for three years, he died from a battle with cancer. :(
Some of the Levels in this documentary aren´t in the final version, very interesting :) And some of the Levels had a slightly different background in this video, like Level 5.
@misterite hey misterite i was confused about earthworm jim 3D i thought shiny owned him and interplay. and the only time earthworm jim was good at interplay was clay fighter 63
@jjman65 Interplay was the publisher for EWJ. EWJ was developed by Shiny. The original was made by a group of individuals that do not work together anymore. Unfortunately we will most likely never see another EWJ as good as the first cause every subsequent one was made by some other team that clearly dosn't have what that original team had...Doug Tenaple!
John Denver!!!!!! Man seeing this video is like super 90's ..Earthworm Jim was so bad ass for its time!! I still love that game...still havent beaten it!!!!
I too miss the 90s both in music and videogames. The 2d Sidescrolling action and simplicity in graphics made them great. Say what you will. There would be no Halos or Call of Dutys if it wasnt for this stuff. Earthworm Jim, Vectorman and Boogerman were classics. Can't wait for Sonic 4 on wiiware.
why not? we tried to make intros to our videos that would baffle the intended viewer. Like the MDK one...show crap 16 bit graphics and then blow out to the next gen graphics...classic bait and switch.
I love this video, but at the same time it really really bothers me that there could've been 2 more fantastic looking levels to my favorite videogame of all time, and i'll never get to know anything about them other than like 10 seconds of footage.
That's pretty hard to believe... but I don't want to just call you a liar and risk being wrong. So prove it man. I'm in college for a major in game design and could use some advice.
That I made this vid...why should I prove anything? Anyways, someone had to make it and that person was me...just look at my other vids and you will see I have made promos for a number of early Shiny games.
Dude thank you ! ! ! ! Earth worm jim is a classic ! A child hood blessing for me ! This video is sweet ! I finally get to see the faces responsible for such an incredible game.
Thanks everyone for all the feedback. I'm proud of the vids I have made and am happy that they are recieved well. Youtube is VERY cool. These vids just sat on my shelf till I had a chance to share them with you.
But who cares, because if you look carefully at 6:10-6:27, mainly at 6:15-6:17, you can see a level unlike any in the series, with Psycrow biting at your ankles!
It's really cool to get this insight into the game's production, and very interesting to see Doug TenNapel and Mike Dietz before they went on to creating The Neverhood, a favorite title of mine :)
This reply is coming quite late--but that's awesome that you work with him. I exchanged e-mails with him briefly some years ago and he seems like a pretty cool guy and a very good animator. How are things at Heavy Iron?
Wonderful, we just shipped our latest Sponge Bob game and are on to bigger and better things. In fact I need to post some vids I made here at HI. check back for updates and thanks for watching!
Man, you can just see the energy and creativity these guys wanted to put into the game, and you could tell by playing the finished product. You barely feel that anymore. Thanks for making this. I have hopes of being a game designer someday and this gives me more insight into one of my all time favorite series.
Traditional 2D animation. I hope that stuff never dies.
i kinda like the original energy atom because it is slower and it has a few more electrons. boy, i love this game, oh, where you the camera man or did you help out with "shiny entertianment" and "playmates"?
I shot, edited and did all the effects in that video. I worked at Shiny which was in Laguna Beach at the time. I have a few more shiny videos. Just click on my name to see them.
There's a big black panel with two rows of red lights in the upper side of the level, towards the left, IIRC. All you have to do is jump into it, and you're there.
Dood, that was VERY long ago. I was their company internal sizzle video guy. I hella loved the games and played them, but in no way did I document the unpublished levels. Even if i did, I really couldn't talk about it here. Sorry to disappoint.
Huh, we must be polar opposites. Heck never really frustrated me all that much, but man, Tube Race can go take a long walk off a short pier. Extremely frustrating level, that one - either I go too slow and run out of air, or go too fast and crash too many times. (Down the Tubes prior to it, however, was awesome.)
Interested in that snot level you can see Psy-Crow fighting Jim in at the end, but you've already said you wouldn't be able to comment, so... thanks for sharing, though!
Dood, I made this video! and tell me why I should give proof to someone that is so disrespectful. Stop being such a curmudgeon or I'll remove all your comments.
Interplay published the PC vers while Rockstar (take 2 games) published the 64 version. None the less Vis developed the game. I should know, I was working at shiny during that time. Does anyone else get the feeling that Doug TenNapel is gay? No disrespect towards the guy or anything, i think he's cool, but he comes off as gay to me.
No, i meant "gay" as in homosexual. Does anyone else think he is? I mean, just listen to the way he talks, look at how he moves, and look at his facial and bodily expressions.
I think you're gay for checking him out so closely :P ha-ha, just kidding. As a friend and ex coworker of Doug I can tell you that he may be flamboyant in nature but is in no way a homosexual. He is happily married with children. Just read what you call "gay" as overzealous creativity.
Many gay men are married and have children, also, he's a christian, christianity says homosexuality is a sin, so he obviously denies it to dis-commit the sin and do what he thinks is "right", just listen to his laugh, he has a high pitched "tee hee hee" laugh. I honestly think he's gay, but has christian beliefs and chooses not to act on his feelings and go along with what is said in the bible.
Seems they left out tons of stuff in the final game. Also, I'm always been puzzled about that "cel to sprite" technique; I don't think that can be automated!
