I used to work for almost 10 years next to some guy who had similar antics like Earl Camembert…plus, he was was a complete moron. Not to mention a childish and boorish. Actually, I would have traded him for Earl every day. Or for Johnny LaRue, who is a paragon of sophistication compared to the guy who shared my console. He's still there…I quit because of burn-out.
As hilarious as this sketch is, Earl's concept of eating along with the viewer at home is brilliant -- and for exactly the reasons he gave. Btw, am i the only one who thot that Floyd behaved like an embittered belligerent abusive little jackass near the end? For the record, I love Joe Flaherty & realize this is "only" acting - but still...
It did seem Earl epitomized the "Happy Talk" concept of TV news on steroids, with this being perhaps the most extreme example. (Some other cases: playing music over his news items, sleeping during a newscast . . . )
@siulungkevin: Floyd has a bloody good right to be an embittered belligerent abusive little jackass-Earl can drive a person completely crazy with his bullshit, and he pretty much drove Floyd to drink himself stupid later on. Earl just should not be there as a newscaster at all-but if he wasn't, the skits wouldn't be funny!
@Neville6000 - Didn't Earl get his job through nepotism? (Given that his father, Merle Camembert - also played by Levy - was an SCTV station manager in the early 1950's, if anyone saw the sketch where he knuckled under to the slightest pressure at a McCarthyist hearing and "named names" including his own mother - who was also Earl's grandmother.)
Joe Flaherty was my favorite on SCTV. Count Floyd, Floyd Robertson etc. were great characters.

Oh, and I forgot Earl once entering the news set on roller skates and wearing an outfit which Floyd aptly called "Jimmy McNichol hand-me-downs."
