@Oliver....I know exactly what you mean, I try to spread positives in all my posts :) There is enuf negative as is. I agree, people should take what they like an leave the rest. No one has the same tastes. But negativity can be so overwhelming that some don't get the help they do need....it's sad.
@Oliver....way to go! I strongly believe in the power and strength of music...I use it myself to get thru the tough times. Your insight is also appreciated. As I read the bicker back and forth about what drug....it doesn't matter (but your right) what kind, it's a metaphor...
@kdladie Thanks for the support, that is what it's all about! I started an account just to chime in on this convo... You are right, it seems like people use Youtube and ES posts in particular to troll and spread negativity. It is sad to me that viewers can't take what they like and leave the rest. It is frustrating but understandable... Suicide and addiction are taboo subjects, and because of this it can be hard to get help. Hurtful comments have the potential for keeping people from gettin help
And from reading his biography I know that he did massive amounts of cocaine and heroin, but he was clean during the events leading up to his suicide. But what drug he was on or what drug he was singing about is irrelevant... To me anyways. I see it as beautiful, poetic, honest music that has helped me through my moments of defining hell. I can honestly say I don't know if I could have gotten clean were it not for the strength I've drawn from music in general... But Steven Smith especially.
Well "The White Lady" has, in my experience, been the vernacular for cocaine... The entire song is a reference to one drug or another. To me it represents dope sickness as well as picking up. It isn't "metal man", he is saying "middle man" which should be obvious reference to picking up dope i.e. "need a middle man to pick up your feet"... I am an addict in recovery and it is quite hard to get out of bed in the morning if you are physically dependent on Skag or any opioid for that matter.
it was like 2 or 3 years since i first listen to this song.. and everytime i listen to it i can't do it just once... over and over and over as it never end
"The white lady" can be either cocaine or heroin. Given Elliott Smith's severe addiction to the latter, and given that it's so much more destructive, and given that the general tone of the song is consistent with the transcendent peace caused by opiates, I'd say it's about heroin.
@unclefeezus The White Lady also could be a figure of death or suicide. It was one in the Victorian era, perhaps he could have been just saying that, too.
@TheEpictoadjourney well you know what? i don't care what you believe this songs about. all i did was search for the top ten songs about cocaine on google and this song came up.
@TheEpictoadjourney "White Lady" is coke. It has always been coke. Heroin is a brown powder. He's singing about someone he loves who is more in love with cocaine than him. So you, in fact, are the wrong one.
@Bretcmm 'The White Lady' is heroin. Elliott was heavily involved with heroin, and he uses the term other songs 'King's Crossing', where references to needles are also mentioned, 'And the needles on the tree'. Disregard the definitions you searched on Google.
@Bretcmm Heroin can actually be white, black, purple and even reddish black. BUT you are right. White Lady is coke people. Just cuz he was a junkie at one point (which he wasn't at his death) doesn't mean the man never did coke. In most cases people move on to heroin after coke, especially someone like Elliot who matured during the coke epidemic of the 80's.

This to me is Elliott Smith writing from his partner's perspective... His partner is finally giving up on him, telling him: "The White Lady Love's You More".... Heartbreaking, but brilliant.
The white lady is a metaphor for cocaine. Smith suffered an addiction to both cocaine, and heroin. An extremely volatile and dangerous combination of drugs. The hardest to beat.
Now, I'm generally against making such strong statements, but the 2 people who "disliked" this song have no souls. You should get your pulses checked. Seriously.
Ditto Olgalayble. Watched "paranoid park" went to wiki, found the songs, googled the man and am amazed that i never made the connection. heard his music when i lived in LA on KCRW several times in the 1990s, never made note of his name, now i know. beautiful music.
I bet this song is about.. Actually nobody cares.
