I think the smith machine is a good machine for people NEW to weightlifting to develop a little size and confidence, when used with bodyweight training for stabilizers, but eventually we must break the umbilical cord and switch to free weights. Switching from smith machine to free weights (or vice versa will provide a barrier in translating that strength, but that strength will be soon there once the stabilizer muscles adapt.
Why is dumbbell press harder than free bench press, I can lift a lot more on the bench as opposed to dumbbells, is this right or am I doing something wrong?...
@Kieran5825 thats is what should happen, dumbells require the most stabalizer muscles to activate therefore you should be stonger on bench press compared to db press

K+K your opinion is only partly right, OK you touch more muscle celluls with free weights, but you also rise up the risk of an injury. SMITH MACHINE is not bad at all. Eevrything is depending on age and physical status of the person. It's only a recent shit to discuss such details, whatever you do in the gym if you do it with a good technic and with the right weight! CHEST = whether you do smith machine, or peck desk machine, or free dumbells or free barbell everything is OK, JUST DO IT!
Actually the stabilization isn't the major factor in the weight difference that one can do between free weights and machines. The one major thing you forgot to make point of is that machines use pulley systems, sometimes 2 or 3 pulleys for one machine. What those pulleys do, is much like a seesaw they take a lot of the work out of the equation. Try this on the tricep pull downmachines! Find one with only 1 pulley and one with 2-3 and you will see the 2-3 one you can do way more weight!
Because of the lack of range of motion, I only do partials on Smith machines. I am able to lift more weight because I lift at the strongest part of the exercise.
fuckin gay my gym only has machines besides dumbells the benches and easy curl bars are all on machines and stableized but its cheap and it works so oh well

Machines do 3 things which make them less effective;
1) They do not work your stabilizer muscles.
2) They produce a very specific muscle memory which is akin to sport specific fitness.
3) They could be forcing you to perform an exercise in such a way that is less effective for your body build.
When you go back to regular weights you not only have to rebuilding the stabilizer muscle strength but also the muscle memory as well. On the plus side, they allow spotter-free heavy workouts.
I actually did more reps with free weights (dumbbell press) than the smith machine (bench press) and I did the smith machine before I did the dumbbell press.

you are correct, but there are many of us that don't have dedicated workout partners. Asking Jimmy Struthers to give you a spot is probably more dangerous than using a smith machine.
i went from 190 on a smith to a 80 dumbell..... felt like shit. but gotten good results since the switch, whats funny is i can do 230 on the smith if i want now
well I workout alone and have a shoulder issue so I pretty much have to stick to machines with neutral grip so I dont hurt it. Takes forever for shoulder tendonitis to heal and if your not carefull and start doing stupid lateral stuff or bench you are never gonna heal it so I just have to suck it up and keep with machines

@jn010jn Well all the ones at my gym are. Unless you're talking about a smith machine. those are usually counterbalanced. Just google images of olympic bars and if they look like those, it should be 45.
Since I snapped, crackled and popped by low back, I now do smitch machine hack squat. Really works your legs and glutes with no stress on your lower back.
I think you just over-anaylized the smith machine. I work out with 245lbs and 255 on incline bench. I can do the same on a regular bench. Other than the stabilization (which isn't as big of a deal as your making it to be) there is nothing differnent. You shouldn't lose any reps because unlike what you stated in the video, I didn't lose any reps.
Our small gym has this smith machine taking up a bunch of space. If i owned the place i would take that shit apart and haul that shit to the garbage dump. Then i would put a lifting platform or another power rack in there .

@NaturalMuscularity That cause you are only working in 1 plane of motion. Thats why you can lift heavier and more controlled in the smith. You are bringing none of your stabilzer muscles into play. After a while if you and a friend were lifting the same amount of time but he worked free weight, he would end up alot stronger than you. Free weight works 3 planes of motion.
But they give more videos, even if they are shorter. If they made them longer we would get the same material, except in one video......like jimmy struthers does on his channel. At least this way we get more intros and outros :D

@NaturalMuscularity That cause you are only working in 1 plane of motion. Thats why you can lift heavier and more controlled in the smith. You are bringing none of your stabilzer muscles into play. After a while if you and a friend were lifting the same amount of time but he worked free weight, he would end up alot stronger than you. Free weight works 3 planes of motion.
