if i was a volinteere fire fighter, and i wanted to own this and put it on my OWN vehicle, would this be legal in north carolina, or would you need a permit
When you were on the HF tone selection and you went through the tones with the manual button, how did you turn off the sirens? Was it a quick double press of the buttons? or did i see that incorrectly at approx. 1:35
Hey dmitry I've always been interested in playing around with one of these I love the sound! but I was wondering if you have any that you don't want could you give 1 to me or sell for cheap?
The simulated-mechanical tone reminds me of Whelen's earlier "X-Ecutor," which winds up only to about 650 Hz (consistent with several electromechanical sirens from the 1950's and earlier).
Great vid! I really liked the depth that you went into in covering all aspects of the siren. Have you ever thought of showing the where you change the siren from the back Or your hookup? Just some ideas for you to think about.I liked the intro with your name, but have you ever thought of trying to put little picture in picture videos along with the annotation highlight box that youtube offers to showcase similar sirens? Or your most popular? That would be a great! I hope this feedback helps!
why does the man1 tone (2:35) sound like an air raid, or more commonly *especially around here*, an alarm for a nuclear meltdown? I heard one of these driving around one day and i thought the world was fucking over then some cop drove by me with it on. Asshole made me think there was a nuclear war.
It's trying to sound like a Federal Q, and doing very poorly at that. The Federal Q is a electromagnetic, motor driven mechanical siren, just like a small version of the WWII air-raid/nuclear meltdown sirens, and it's traditionally the favored siren for most larger emergency vehicles like fire engines, ladder trucks, rescues, and some ambulances. Some fire departments like FDNY don't use Q's too often, instead they use sirens like at 4:32
damn the only thing that sucks about this one is the horn, it doesnt sound as mean as the whelen 295HFSA6 siren model... i would have definitely bought this one if it had a better horn sound
i was curious to what type this one siren in my comunity is and i figured you may know or someone else would. its pattern is hi hi hi hi low low low low then goes to phaser for 2 seconds, hi low hi low and repeats. Any idea what it is?
@stretchnutz90 it is most likely to be unitrol series siren, they have so called "sweep" mode in which only selected tones would ring and this "sweep" can be locked with a flip of a switch, basically having it to cycle over and over. Look at unitrol siren videos.
@dmitry103 Thank you for your response! I heard the same tones in the video for the Rumbler system. Tulsa OK. has the same tones i was explaining and if you search the vid. it comes back as "New siren shakes motorists" (or similar).
There is a button on the back for ScanLock. You switch the knob on like t1 t2 or t3 and when you hit the button to select the tone for all you guyz who wanted to know how to change tones ;)
whelens older sirens sound way better...the new ones with the black rectangular MAN and HORN buttons sound too mechanical and teh horn is lame..the previous sirens w/ teh red round buttons for the MAN and HORN buttons are my favorite
Can the HF function be programmed to cycle through tones other than what is set in T1, 2, and 3? In other words, can you set the HF up to run "powercall" and have T1, 2, 3 as wail, yelp, piercer?
I have this unit in my patrol car and rarely use anything more then wail. I will "jackrabbit" if I have to enter a busy intersection or to get a clueless motorist attention. Maybe city guys prefer all the different settings. I find them annoying.
I don't think you know what you are talking about. Whelen would not make a siren you can be sued for using. Almost every emergency vehicle in NJ (Police, Fire, and EMS) use the hyperyelp. It is a great siren for saying "MOVE THE FUCK OVER" when they don't move over enough to get by.
Disregard my last message, I think I realized what you were referring to as "fast yelp", but I thought you meant the "hyperyelp" or the first T3 setting. I agree that fast yelp is worthless.
I thought fast yelp is the ridiculous name "Hyperyelp".
I lose track of all the gimmick sounds and their stupid names.
Simple plain boring WAIL is best.
The human brain alerts earlier to Wail than any other sound. (Maybe because Wail vaguely resembles a crying baby and humans are "programmed " to notice and respond!)

Some moron may have a collision, then claim the arrow stick confused him causing him to drive into something.
Check out his other vid of the Unitrol Omega 5000 Siren Tones, between (I think) 1:10-1:20, it sounds like a video or arcade game... not recogizable at all as an emergency tone. Some cheap car alarms have those tones, but hardly appropriate for an emerg vehicle. You're right about wail, that seems to be the most responsive tone, and the slower the wail, the better.
The siren amp's airhorn is much more effective then the vehicle's factory equipped horn. I often have to travel through a large metro area to get to where I need to go and Wail is TOO familiar a sound to use throughout an entire run. At some point an officer needs to change his tone generally differentiating between Wail and Yelp. I use HF because I find Piercer effective when clearing intersections (echoes). Most people here are worried more about making that light then moving out of your way.
@robertgift Car horn is only in place to warn other motorists of impending crashes. EV's purposely have sirens to use to warn cars to pull over. If you have a siren, you should use it. People will recognize a siren with pulling over more than a car horn, which is more frequently heard, and ignored.
OK how do you engage the "new" tones? I didnt see you pressing anything. I love the new wails, yelp etc, but can you explain how do you get those tones. Thanks
our brush truck our fire police truck and our tanker have the whelen but not this exact one and the annoying part is that people leave the switch on on so when somebody wants to show their kid the lights you here woo woo woo woo errrrr errrrr errrrrrrrr

HF does not depend on T1, T2 and T3 settings. You can choose from 12 different siren tones for each cycle of HF feature. Great question by the way. Hope this helps.
Ok, been wondering what's the deal with all those other sounds that is different than whelen regular sound? And how to engage it? From the back panel? What's the purpose of that other sound?
Have you ever got the urge to install some in your car??? If you could get like 3 or 4 sirens working at once in one car.......that would be AWESOME!!!!
What does 3 or 4 piercing sirens sound like at once!?!?!?!?!?!?
Dmitry, are these sirens.. the 295SLSA1, and the 295SLSA6 a real pain in the 'you-know-what' to hook up? I'm not an electronics expert by any stretch of the imagination. About all I can do is hook up a positive, and a negative wire from the power source (the battery) to the siren and then the positive and negative wires to the speaker.
Let me be honest about myself, I get very confused when I find a handfull of wires coming out the back of a siren or siren w/lights controls. I have a Fed. Sig. 480K w/lights control and I've even downloaded the operators/ installers manual for it...but I can't make sense of it since some of the wires, which were labelled, have the labelling rubbed off.. This 480K has great tone but it's a paper weight until I can figure out a way to hook it up. By the way, I think it's a Fed. Sig.
It's a Unitrol, which as of a few years ago, is now owned by Fed-Sig (but a lot of us still just refer to them as Unitrol). If you want, I can take it off your hands for you :-D
Well....., I'm not sure if I want to get rid of it because I know it has some good tones, but thanks for the offer..
Is it illegal to even have a siren installed in a non-emergency (civilian) vehicle? I used to be Military Police, as if that makes any difference, but even that was ages ago. I'm retired now. I would just use it briefly now and then on my farm just to hear it blow. I wonder what a patrolman would say if I got pulled over for something and he saw it mounted in the car.
Dmitry, by 'common wire' do you mean the power source wire to the battery or ignition? If so, then there would be the ground wire. That's two wires altogether, then the 100 watt and the 50 watt to the speaker that's four wires, then there would be a ground wire to the speaker...that's five wires. Is that all there are to the 295SLSA1? I guess I should try downloading a manual for this siren to see it it's something I could hook up.
Oh it is? Well this shows how much I know about these two models! Thank you, Rofocowboy84! I love the siren tones of 295SLSA1 and I'd have bought one by now, but I don't think I'd stand a snow ball's chance in "____" in hooking one up....too dang many wires.
I like the idea the 295SLSA6 has lights control; I didn't realize it has the same siren tones that 295SLSA1 has. Does the 295SLSA1 have a lot less wires to get confused over?
I'd want to obtain a 295SLSA1 if it's a breeze to hook up.
The one you were originally talking about, did you mean the 295HFSA1? The one with the red circular pushbuttons with Wail, Yelp, and Piercer, or is it one that looks like this, just without the top lighting controls, and with a whole bunch of tones?
But yeah, the 295SLSA1 is pretty easy to hook up, just +, -, and the speaker wires. If you want, you can do the whole horn wiring thing, but you don't have to in order for the siren to work....
No, I'm not familiar with the 295HFSA1 in fact I don't know what it even looks like; I was referring to the 295SLSA1. I know where I can get one (don't know if it's new or not) for $269.00. My favorite tones are the piercer, woop, and warbler.
There's a tiny pushbutton on the back of the siren. I show it in one of the pictures. All you need to do it press it to go through tone cycle. Link to manual in "info".

No. You'll think moron with car alarm going off.

Coming to intersections, we usually leave in Wail.

@robertgift I think I found something that bothers me to no end... when people constantly "jackrabbit" the manual button! LOL
Unit430 2 years ago 2
I hate that sound, too. Often by amateurs in NYC.
Driver should have BOTHands on wheel and be looking. Not one hand on wheel and other 'playin wit da siren' and glancing down reaching for the siren.
Most often I am silent in Manual.
Just two cycles up and down as I reach the intersection.
If much traffic - Wail.
Yelp only if Wail is not being effective.
Hi-Lo in backed-up traffic.
When everyone has yielded, we press P.A. microphone to instantly silence the siren.
robertgift 2 years ago
You can activate Hands-Free through the horn-ring: no need to look down.
Wail/ Yelp - City Streets, Yelp/ Piercer - Highways, and Piercer to clear intersections.
squigee62090 2 years ago
To change sounds, one often looks down to reach selector knob.
I disconnected the Horn Ring wire.
When siren is on, Horn Ring sounds siren but does not allow vehicle horn to sound.
In a QUIET ZONE, rather than sound the siren, which is always FULL volume, we tap the vehicle horn.
Piercer and Powercall are garbage.
Not as effective as Wail.
Yelp is fast Wail. But Yelp tends to panic some drivers.
Wail is best for all.
I try Yelp only if Wail is not being effective.
robertgift 2 years ago
The siren amp's airhorn is much more effective then the vehicle's factory equipped horn. squigee62090 2 years ago 2
Fake "Air horn" is a worthless, rude gimmick.
Not as loud as the square wave Wail sound. It can even match the key of music on vehicle stereos and not be noticed.
Wail is best heard by the human ear. (My theory is because it vaguely resembles a crying baby to which human ears are attuned.)
Before I defeated it, our Unitrol changed modes by tapping the horn ring. (If in Wail, HR tap put into Yelp for 5(?) seconds.)
I wired a button on the end of a cord easily held by driver or right seat.
robertgift 2 years ago
after hearing a sound for so long, people block it out, so they ignore a single tone quicker than hearing wail, then yelp, and/or piercer and horn.
any tone can match any song on the radio. some songs have sirens in them. hence you change them to differentiate yourself.
holding a button while driving is dangerous. a driver should have both hands on the wheel and use that horn, or leave it up to the passenger.
CTFD13 1 year ago
Who is hearing a siren for a long time?
Hi-Lo and air horn can match music. Our Hi-Lo is E5/C5 which matches the common keys of C and E.
Wail will not match anything.
The cord button is held by the driver with both hands on the wheel or right side member.
(I prefer the foot switch which is like an old floor high beam switch.)
Piercer, an absurd gimmick, is not perceived as well as Wail.
Why use a less effective sound?
We have both siren and horn. Horn for quieter notice.
robertgift 1 year ago
thats interesting. in all of our squads, when the emergency master is off, you have the car horn, when its on you have the siren on it.
CTFD13 1 year ago
Best to keep the vehicle horn always functioning and NOT overridden (canceled) when siren system is on.
We often do a polite tap of the horn in place of a blaring siren.
robertgift 1 year ago
@robertgift Car horn is only in place to warn other motorists of impending crashes. EV's purposely have sirens to use to warn cars to pull over. If you have a siren, you should use it. People will recognize a siren with pulling over more than a car horn, which is more frequently heard, and ignored.

4:49 would be the only reason I'd buy this one. GREAT video, very professional!

I agree. When I first heard that tone on a passing ambulance I fell in love with it. I like it so much better than the standard wail or yelp.
sephoratrading 2 years ago
signal on 4:12 is in Poland name "LE-ON" this the same tone.

dmitry103 3 years ago
Ok, been wondering what's the deal with all those other sounds that is different than whelen regular sound? And how to engage it? From the back panel? What's the purpose of that other sound?

One of my favourite sirens so far!
Have you ever got the urge to install some in your car??? If you could get like 3 or 4 sirens working at once in one car.......that would be AWESOME!!!!
What does 3 or 4 piercing sirens sound like at once!?!?!?!?!?!?

hmm.....I'm adding this idea to my "upcoming videos" list, lol

Dmitry, are these sirens.. the 295SLSA1, and the 295SLSA6 a real pain in the 'you-know-what' to hook up? I'm not an electronics expert by any stretch of the imagination. About all I can do is hook up a positive, and a negative wire from the power source (the battery) to the siren and then the positive and negative wires to the speaker.
sirkennethjohn 3 years ago
Correct about first part. Now, most units, including this one, have Common lead and 100W or 58W lead. They're for the speaker.

Rofocowboy84 3 years ago

Well... to be honest about it, as I always am,... I'd have to say the Whelen 295SLSA1 is still my all-time favorite, but this comes close.
sirkennethjohn 3 years ago
This is the same exact siren, except with lighting controls....
Rofocowboy84 3 years ago
I'd want to obtain a 295SLSA1 if it's a breeze to hook up.
sirkennethjohn 3 years ago
The one you were originally talking about, did you mean the 295HFSA1? The one with the red circular pushbuttons with Wail, Yelp, and Piercer, or is it one that looks like this, just without the top lighting controls, and with a whole bunch of tones?
But yeah, the 295SLSA1 is pretty easy to hook up, just +, -, and the speaker wires. If you want, you can do the whole horn wiring thing, but you don't have to in order for the siren to work....
Rofocowboy84 3 years ago
Hi Rofocowboy,
No, I'm not familiar with the 295HFSA1 in fact I don't know what it even looks like; I was referring to the 295SLSA1. I know where I can get one (don't know if it's new or not) for $269.00. My favorite tones are the piercer, woop, and warbler.

usmarines911 3 years ago
There's a tiny pushbutton on the back of the siren. I show it in one of the pictures. All you need to do it press it to go through tone cycle. Link to manual in "info".
