AYINLA ought to have been immortalised deservedly by now--albeit belatedly-a hugely popular commercial road in Abeokuta NOT Itoko OR a well-known thriving market place will be fittingly great as a token remembrance of his name. Dopemu-Papa Ashafa in Lagos state--is a mass elongated lenghty popular road--one of the bus stops there was named after Ayinla shortly after his death(i once lived in Ogunjebe street, which is 5 minutes walking distance to Ayinla`sbus stop) thats not enough!!
" NIbiti ajanaku fi ese tele,ni omo eranko gbe njeun""-----functioning brain to the coreeeeeeeeeee!!!!-----even Ayinla sobriquet "Alhaji costly" was fragrantly and flamboyantly suited him.
I was an impressionable 17 year old in 1980 when Omowura was fatally murdered;it was May 5th.The gory unsubstantiated story that precipitated his premature brutal ending then was Ayinla was attending a reconcilliation meeting---he had been having protracted war-of-words feud with his once trusted close lieutenant, a man named Fatai Bayewun----amidst heated noisy arguements, in a moment of demented fury,Fatai Bayewun smashed a beer bottle onto Omowura"s head.Ayinla was dead.
Ayinla omowora"s concilliatory and celebrating songs heralding new era when he ended embittered bile-filled feud with his much-praised and loved ultra-talented drummer; affectionately known as "Adewole oniluola"--whom apparently Omowura deemed to be "indispensable asset to him".what a masterpiece gem of music!
@MassT82 To all Ayinla's music lover, try and google Sunday Idonije and you will get his pictures + websites. This is man I suspect is a repository of information on all that deals with Nigerian music. He has interesting articles in pdf on various aspects of Nigeria artists and media mindset .
