well, to each his own, but I completely disagree. Davy Jones is not a tenth the singer that Harry was. This arrangement to my ears is more crisp and imaginative as well.
@fredoviola Im not saying Harry Nilsson is worse than Davy Jones im just saying i prefer that version a bit more. Harry Nilsson is very talented. Hes sang some fantastic songs and any covers he's done of the Beatles were brilliant( and there the hardest Band to do a good cover of)
Harry Nilsson was amazingly talented, but extremely self-destructive. If his father hadn't abandoned his family, who knows what direction his life would have taken?
I've always known that Nilsson originally did this song-but strangely enough i'd never looked it up to hear it until now. I've gotten so used to Davy Jones version/performance on "Head" that this version is somewhat lost on me. I get the gist tho-disturbing song about child abandonment set to happy music and vocals-as if to dismiss the pain in childish denial-Davy put the icing on the "WTF?" cake however with the dancing-made it all the more sad. to me anyway. Davy's version for the win.
@KongKyrre I like the greatest hits version better also, but I wish they wouldn't have faded it out as soon. I really like that bit where the chorus says "My old man is a good man. He does the best that he can" right at the very end.
@feckingbillgates There is a version that is bandied about where Mike Nesmith does the lead vocal, and I greatly prefer it to Davy's version. Of course, Nilsson's style was so suited to Davy, both vocally and in Davy's stage dancing abilities. I think that Daddy's Song is one of the best segments in Head, despite my not being crazy about Davy's vocal :)
Yeah, I've never heard Harry's version until now. The horns sound conspicuously similar to those featured in his song "Best Friend," which was used in the TV show The Courtship of Eddie's Father. Interesting.

He did all the voices himself, he was years ahead of his time and this song just stabs you in the heart.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
This version is much better than the Davy Jones version. Davy Jones has a horrible face, anyway.

@BettinaBalser I agree about it being one of the best segments in Head. Great film in total though. Davy Jones still has a horrible face, however.

@feckingbillgates If Davy Jones "has a horrible face," there is no hope for me!
