  • Makes everything OK for 5:22

  • First, to me it's no coincidence that they played this when Jerry was clean, healthy, spry, chipper, and present. '89 saw some of the the best playing the band had performed consistently in years. Second - this wonedrful song, among the best ever in their catalouge, is wicked tough to sing. Crosby & Nash had helped with the harmonies and here, crusty old guys that they are, they nail it purty darn good. Does make me cry every time I hear it. Brent was in severe pain. Listen with your heart.

  • RIP Bear... We love you...... <3

  • Brings tears to my eyes every time i watch this show at home . RIP Jerry Brent

  • I love the pop of the crowd, imagine, first time they played this song since '72. Ahhh The Mothership, it housed so many great shows over the years, from The Dead to Phish. I've only been there once, but i hope that building stands forever. I mean think about it, The Dead's shows, and although im not a fan, the place where Metallica Bassist Cliff Burton played his last show. So much musical history there.

  • Simply phenomenal...just WOW!!!

  • Hmmm. I like me some Jerry :) Peace to all who love him and to those who don't know him, get to know him :) Jerry will turn any hate you have to somthing else. A little Midland never hurts :)

  • Also played Dark Star & Death Don't Have No Mercy there!

A lovely tune I only saw once inside meaning: ~211 shows I always got inside! Only once did I not get in, at the L.A. Sports Arena in late '94 and they played this. However, believe it or not when they were playing it luckily I was able to be standing just outside an open doorway through which we could not pass but could clearly see all of the stage! Should I count that among the shows I saw as like I was late?

    Augy San Diego

  • To all the ones that are speaking bad words about Brent...

Brent is awesome, end of story.

  • what an awsome song!!! ashame they even played it post brent..vince really fucked this song up..rip brent you are missed.

  • That was great! Great song!!

  • A GREATE FULL DEAD SECRET THAT WILL BE TOLD

    Google

John Joseph O'Brien IS UNCLE JOHN :-)

AND ALL THE SECRETS WILL BE TOLD says THE SCOLE GHOSTS :-)

  • ...and we cheered for the band until the lights came on. Then 17,000 people paused- and began cheering again for ourselves. We will carry this forever.

  • I was there.

  • An amazing breakout! We'll always miss you, Jerry.

  • I agree. My favorite Jerry vocal years are from about '86-'90. Weathered but still powerful. aged but wise. He could breathe life into every song, never sang exactly the same way twice. Each song was an individual expression of that moment. That's what made him a great singer to me. RIP, love forever, miss you Jer...thanks for a lifetime.

  • well put

  • my favorite dead song ever...

  • i do prefer the studio version but then again the live performances just produces so much passion

  • I LOVE Jerry's voice later in his life. Warts and all. The weathering was an asset for the material he sang and his approach to melody. It suits the melancholy stuff brilliantly...broken angel and all.

  • So jerry didnt have a "perfect" voice... it was unique though. His lifestyle may have caused the shaky timbre, however, it was what they wrote and how they played it that makes GD legendary. The jams will live 4ever!!

  • This was my first dead show. - 20 years ago tonight... Quite a whopper it was : )

  • i like it, there is no crazy need for a strong keys here it's perfect, and you could show some class by shuting your mouth !

  • Jerr, U Are The Light..We MISSIN' You..!

  • Yo, love the music will. Does there really have to be "my favorite year?" I stopped asking my 12 year old his favorite everything years ago.

  • We are not belittling the musicians, but merely attempting to draw conclusions based on where and how they came and how they went. Some of us prefer the former, as evident from the quality of this performance, which, sadly is nothing close to what they were capable of just a few years before...

  • 1989 was a peak year for the Dead - far superior to 1980-1986, by almost all estimations. If you don't appreciate the weathered timbre of Jerry's voice, that's your taste talking - not his performance.

  • As evident, there is no accounting for taste.

  • I don't know, personally I've always preferred the one the Dead did in the studio of this song. I don't really think Jerry, as well as the rest of the band, ever really nailed this song live (singing together in harmony was especially difficult on this tune). This performance was one probably the best one I've heard of Attics.

  • XXXXXXXXXXXXX always

  • I pretty much called my Grateful Dead career complete when I saw them play this song in 1991.

  • Hahahaha!!

  • got to put these lyrics up on my blog robert hunter is one of our best poets in the united snakes

  • I just saw a VH1 classic documentary on GD. It was awesome. about this album too. Im not even a big fan but this song is lightyears ahead of its time. I cant stop replaying it. R.I.P Jerry/ Pig Pen

  • and brent RIP

  • tchaef,

this is my favorite grateful dead song. I set up a you tube account just to tell you that. Do not worry

  • @runin4theroses

    A+ comment.

  • I loved this Band. So sad what cigarettes do the voices... and what heroin does to lives.

  • It's heroin, not cigarettes that mess up the vocal chords

  • Hmmm, Jerry was a heavy smoker most of his life. Seeing as though the there is scientific proof that cigarettes wreak havoc on the larynx, esophagus, and throat, by way of damaging tissue and restricting blood flow, we can safely say that smoking certainly had an adverse effect of Mr. Garcia's singing ability.

  • hey now~

this was a great show...hampton is the mothership....

and like bob says below...thanks for indulging us....

    help is on the way......

  • Hahahaha Hampton even LOOKED like the mothership. I loved these shows.

  • By the way ...this IS help on the way to so many. thanks for indulging us.

  • Truly a beautiful moment in history.

  • I love this song as much as life itself... Damn I miss those days...

  • "Shown some class"? Dude you are not making ANY SENSE at all. Like cstefanile says...."Just go away..."

  • classy response, well thought out!

  • I know...the truth is tough to swallow huh?

  • Couldn't disagree more bubba.

  • @cstefanile I totally agree wit hou cstefanile, Brent is awesome. He is my favorite keyboardists for the band, pigpen is a close second.

I just love the sound when he was with the band early on, I also love how he plays the Hammond B3 organ like pigpen. dondingus82 must have never liked the dead.

Bill Graham said "They're not the best at what they do, they're the only ones that do what they do"

    God Bless

  • You have got to be kidding!!! WOW!!

  • Brent's voice Inappropriate? Not nearly as inappropriate as your comment is. I guess you know, huh. Listen to his part, that is some TOUGH singing. This song takes a lotta balls to pull off. They did a great job with it in most cases. When were you born? Yesterday?

  • OK, but this is 19 years later. Would you rather they not sing it again because it is not 1970-1972?

Brent = Donna??? Come on now....

  • @dondingus82 You suck some major dick right now lmao brent was the man, and was perfect for the band, and although i respect your opinion, most would disagree VERRRYYYYYY STRONGLYYYYYYY

  • @dondingus82 i was there bro , u r full of yourself

  • amazing
