By the sounds of things, me and your little cutie are on the same ventilator and I found myself breathing in time with his vent. Made me a little lightheaded as he breathes pretty fast compared to me. Hehe.
The beeping is just the ventilator alarm - it goes off whenever there's too much of a change in the pressure in the hosing running between it and him.
Great idea and simple as well. I am a nurse that takes care of Hospice patients in the home. It's hard to change tapes and hold the trach so it won't pop out. This method gives me both hands to use. Thanks for the tip.
You're very welcome. This is an idea that just popped into my head one day, and once I'd done it I thought, "Doh!! Why didn't I try that before??" It seemed so obvious and simple once I'd done it, and it does make tape changes far easier.
Some of the best ideas/inventions come from those "ah hah" moments. I did use it the other night and you're right it was simple. No need to reply to this but no that you and your little angel who is such a cutie are now being thought of by another. I wish you and him only happiness and hope for good health for the future.
Will he be decannulated some time in the future? It's admirable how children can grow into things so easily, and adapt to all that's being thrown at them. What an absolute cutie! :D
He was born with very short ribs, which makes his chest very narrow. He also has heart problems. Both problems mean breathing is a lot of effort for him, so he needs some help to prevent exhaustion and heart failure.
Ohh i'm sorry to hear that :(. I have a question though.. how does he carry the oxygen machine (?) with him when he goes places? Sorry if this is a dumb question!
The ventilator just pushes room air in and out of him. When he needs it, feed oxygen into the mix by attaching a cable to the side of the vent from an oxygen machine or cylinder. The vent weighs about 12kg and has a shoulder strap. It can be carried for short distances. We are lucky enough to have light-weight lithium batteries for the vent. The old ones weigh about 1/2 a car battery. Ouch!
he is so beautiful what an angel your a brave woman i am a cna and i am brand new im kind of nervous to take care of the trach patients but watching you i know i just have to be confident =]
Thank you for your compliments about my son. He is an utter sweetheart, but also has a cheeky streak a mile wide! With all your patients, you just need to learn all you can, listen to them and their carers carefully, and be confident in your handling of them. However, also have the confidence to ask about how they like things done if you're not sure. They'll appreciate that. :)
Thanks so much for this.. I always changed Sebastian's ties (or tape as you call it) with another person. I'm gonna try this out, it will help me out a lot & not be so dependant on other people's schedule. :)
Ohh & What a cutie you got there!! My son is also on the vent & he is 14 mts now. Any plans of weaning your little guy off the vent?
Thanks Mosco! :) My son is 3 now (he was 18 months in this video). Sometimes he manages off the vent for an hour or so, but when he gets ill, he's back on full time. He was born with a very small rib cage. He will get off the vent when it gets big enough - hopefully.
I may have several chronic illnesses and am considered an inspiration to to so many throughout the country, but the true heroes are the little ones and the professionals and loved ones who care for them! My prayers are with you, and of course to your little hero! Thank you for being MY inspiration! !
You're very kind, though it's probably easier for my son than it is for you. You have some painful conditions there, AND you are an adult, so you have the social and environmental awareness to compare your situation with others. My son has never known any different, and is not in any pain. You overcome more each day than he does.
Thanks for the kind comments. :) Yes, I was using a suction catheter to hold it in. Since I worked out this method, tape changes have been so much easier. No need to rush, and these days he hardly coughs at all - he had a slight cold in this video.
I have a two year old that had been trached for...two years, if you have any questions mmaybe i could help, or if you need a support system of people who understand.
thank you for your comment. i have some videos of my baby on my channel. we will be leaving the hospital after almost 3 months tomorrow. not going home just yet though.
He is a cutie pie.

What a cutie, and so obedient. I cant imagine going through all that, and your little one seems to do it like nothing. Great idea by the way.
