@Eshneh There really is, though. This video was made back when I first learned and was able to land sideflips. During that, "Holy-crap-I'm-so-cool-cause-I-can-do-this-so-I-have-to-show-the-world" phase. My technique has gotten crisper and smoother since. The reason the video seems to have no upwards swing is because right after jumping, I go down to grab my knees. Which works, but is not the best. I don't do that anymore, I swing my arms around in a wide circle.
@Eshneh I've thought about redoing most of my tutorials with clearer instructions and improved techniques but my mate that I usually go out with hasn't been up for it lately.
@OMGMikeHawk These are old. I've done hundreds and never hurt myself. In fact I've hurt myself more by screwing up a kong vault. If you don't like my method, don't use it, but don't say it doesn't work. I've never so much as twisted my ankle.
im sorry but thats a really bad technique to use, if you hop and block hard into a sideflip without using ur arms then ur just going to end up with tendonitis or something =S.
I don't exactly appreciate you acting as though you're any more of an expert on this than I am. I've been doing sideflips for a few years now, same technique every time, and I assure you no harm has come from it. Not once did I say "Don't use your arms" in the video. But it's the snap and tuck of the feet that result in the rotation. That's physics.
I didn't say this was the best, nor only way to sideflip. But it's far from the worse.
No actually I don't think I've ever bailed because of an obstacle. Although I have bailed OFF of an obstacle because I didn't manage the height correctly. I suppose the bottom line though is that you should always be ready for a bail, no matter how many times you have successfully completed a sideflip, because a mistake is always a mistake, and sometimes it only takes one. I've bailed pretty hard from sideflips but they typically aren't the most painful.
I was pretty scared at first too. I don't remember how I exactly overcame my fear, I just did. If I had to suggest anything, I'd definitely say use mats and pads. Even if you can't get acces to a gym, you can use couch cushions or a matress, as silly as that seems. Also, I would recommend trying it off of a 1 or maybe two foot high platform of some sort, because that extra one or two feet may provide the height you need to complete your rotation -- Even on a first try! Good luck!!~~
Oh! Also! I can't believe I forgot this, but you should try practicing your first sideflips in the snow. It's absolutely amazing how hard you can bail on snow and not feel any pain, lol.
Yes, it's okay to practice in the grass. The chances of you breaking your knee -- Or any bone -- Are very unlikely. You'd have to do something very wrong. In all likelyhood, you will be injured a few times, and you will probably go through some pain to get it right. I practiced this for one or two months before I learned how to do them perfect each time. Always practice with someone else present in case you do get injured. Good luck, be safe, and have fun!
Okey, So I tried this, when I was going to bend my knees in, so get the extra spin, my legs got trapped there, happends all the time, altrough I tried to take them out, but still does not work, hm.. any suggestions? Thanks.
Try doing some without grabbing your knees. It's not a problem with your technique, it's a problem with your instinct. All it takes is one successful sideflip and you'll figure out when you can straighten your legs out. I would suggest trying to sideflip down a very, very small grassy hill (Seriously only like 1 to 3 feet at the most) -- The small difference in height could provide the split second of rotation you need.
No arm swing upon takeoff :o

In fact, I just re-watched my video, because it's been so long. I even say, and I quote, "swing arms upwards"

How long have you practise this?
And, Is it okey to try it out in the grass, I mean, It might hurt if you land wrong or somthing, like breaking a knee, or somthing..
What's the chances of that happening?
