  • Dear Randy, when playing do you always count 1 e and a 2 etc in your head? Cause I don't and i have some problems with triplets in a 4/4 beat. Any suggestions?

  • @S0ulForgeD try counting 1,2,3 2,2,3 3,2,3 4,2,3

  • haha! look at the guy all dressed up.

    looking good!

    thanks for making the show

  • Hey randy, I was trying this beat out, and my high hats are really pissing me off. I guess i never really noticed it before cause i didn't stomp on the high hat too much. I'm not sure if i can explain to easily.. but they don't catch well enough sort of, if i barely lift up on the pedal, there's a little bit of space that the clutch moves before the cymbals do, i'm not sure if a new stand would fix it, or if there is any adjustments to fix it. Hope i was clear enough on the problem. Thanks, Jon.

  • Try taking your top high hat off and you should have two nuts on the bottom that may need tighened

  • I am voting for the cowbell! Lol.

  • look at the guy all dressed up :D

  • Do you have any Scooby Groove? Would kill for the last demo.

  • Do you remember them? Local Jersey band. I have a cassette I think. RVP

  • Absolutely. Huge influence too. A dude in college turned me on to them. I got to drive up to N.J and see them tho :(. Me and my friends in D.C. loved em. Still do. After I posted, I actually found move over bacon used on amazon. The power of google.

  • *never got to drive up to N.J. :(

    vanzdrumming com

  • nice and your a good drummer by the way :)

  • i used the same exact sticks for years, loved them!!!!!!!

  • this guys funny lol

  • Awesome lesson, as always, but one question - when playing the fill, wouldn't whacking your hi-hat with the left hand be easier? It's probably harder since you're doing a double, but it's definitely easier then getting your right hand across the kit in an eighth-note period.

  • it switches the mics you fuck

  • i have a question

    this is random and irrelavent

but whats with the phone..your always playing with it

anything to do with the recording or something stupid im not picking up on?

  • i love you

  • The expression at 6:50 is priceless... Mr vP, I really enjoy your videos, they give me new ideas for drumming all the time. Also, I don't think you speak too fast at all, so please, just keep up the good work. I look forward to the lessons too, they could be very cool. Take care!

  • Love all your lessons man, awesome stuff! :)

Would love to see a lesson on how to tune the drums, my drums sounds crap compared to yours! Im not playing on any beginner drumset here, so its frustrating not to be able to get the full sound out of my drums. :(

  • He has a video about tuning. Check out his channel.

  • this is good

  • not enough cow bell

  • I have looked through comments trying to figure this out but I give up..I know you just said your hats and ride are 10 years old but they sound great what kind are the hats? They look like they may be old A Zildjians but I can't tell for sure.

  • You are correct. The black logo is about worn off. RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • Do I win a prize for guessing right!? I sure hope I do I have earned it haha

  • Yes.. send me 3 easy payments of $39.95 S&H a month and I will be sure to get your prize pack in the mail. Ha Ha. RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • You sir are nothing more than a thief. I have already given you money for a DVD that is not yet in my hands and you are still trying to suck more cash out of me. What is the world coming to? Oh btw I am with the few people who say the volume could be turned up a notch. The sound of the set is awesome just maybe a touch louder.

  • Check your mail service. I ordered the DVD and it was here in the UK four days later.

  • is tht a pearl or a mapex kit... cause it doesnt look like tama...

  • None of the above. Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute. RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • haha, i was sure it was a pearl reference.. cause of the finish.. but yamaha are nice :) better at making motorbikes though :)

  • I would disagree. I haven't found a better sounding drum kit. Besides... you can't get better hardware since they are made in the motorcycle shop. Although... I am still a fan of Ludwig Classics!!!

    RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • Have you tried the pearl masterworks series... hand built for you :) where i have lessons they have one, and i played it .. it was like i went to heaven :) .. but yes my son, ludwigs are excellent.. i recently sold on ebay my john bohnam ludwig which he signed.. so im looking for a new kit :).. i was thinking of sonor .. ?

  • why would you sell that kit!?

  • Cause its a colectors item, and i have never played it... atm i play a yamaha stage custom, which is very nice but i want an upgrade :)

  • Look at the guy all dressed up haha

  • Yeah I bought a set of 70's 15" K Hats, still have em, paid about 100$ at a fluke flea market.

    Now they're pretty much priceless

  • The master is back. I am a beginner and I have seen Mike J videos as well as yours. Yours are more detailed for beginners because you present the technique slowly. I have learned tons with your videos, thank you for your efforts.

  • Needs moar cowbell

  • You are a nice, funny, friendly&happy teacher..nice to learn from you..thank you for your efforts of posting all the lessons Mr.Randy Van Patten. All the best...! you're Rock!!..God Bless ya...

  • mad, charlie harper bowling shirt.

  • Lol, you're so funny ! And your drumming is superb.

  • Hey randy what cymbals are you using? I know there Zildjian but what kind? they sound great

  • nice work. turn off your pager! lol

  • i don't think that was his pager, i think before he plays drums he turns off his speaking mike, then turns it back on after lol

  • except that he was pressing it while he was talking. ;)

  • Correct. I mute it while I play so I don't over modulate the lav mic. Pager... ha ha. Does anyone own a pager anymore?

  • whoaa I got a reply from the Van himself. lmao

Ok so I was just wondering, I know this is an over asked question but how much did your drumming setup there cost? (just the stuff you need to drum) and then how much did the recording stuff cost? Thanks man.

  • It's been a long time building. I didn't buy it all at once so it is pretty hard to put a price on it. My hats and ride are about 10 yrs old. Hard to say what they would cost now. RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • aw alright thanks though.

  • im pretty sure thats his mic, so the drums dont auto adjust the sound. just sayin

  • 3:05 ... pretty cool.

  • sweet crazy applicable stuff thannnkkkkz

  • Tasty fll. Love your videos!

  • is your buddy´s name Steve Gadd ? really cool fill.

  • Fantastic to see you back dude. Keep going just as you have done over the years.

There is no need for anyone to keep comparing each persons style or whatever.

    You are unique man.

    Cheers.

  • Vanz, I've been playing guitar for about 20 years but have always loved playing drums. I bought a kit recently and have been sifting through youtube in search of useful tips etc.

Your posts are great - useful and entertaining as well.

    Thanks man, much appreciated.

  • Hilarious, dude don't talk any slower, this is youtube, they can play it over and over and over until they get it. Plus I think most pc speakers these days have volume knobs. Great tips as always, much obliged.

  • legend.

  • vans drumming how are you dude, please dont talk slow like that...

if you cant hear him, turn your volume up people... However asking him to talk slower makes it annoying for everyone else who isnt fucking stupid :)

  • Cool:)

  • Awesome man. really enjoy these lessons. keep em coming!

  • just like mike's lessons :)

  • I don't mind being compared to Mike because he is awesome. However... I have been online 3 Yrs doing the same type of lessons here on YouTube. This isn't a new thing for me. Why is it I am all of a sudden being compared to Mike? I truly see myself as a completely different and original player. Mike is amazing. RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • whoa there vanz! i'm not, in any way, comparing you to mike. i understand that you are two completely different drummers with different styles.

lots of respect for both of you especially that you are providing us with awesome lessons such as this. pardon my comment if it seemed like i was comparing.

still looking forward to this live lesson gig of yours.

    peace.

  • No problem... it really wasn't an insult. If you would have compared me to a sucky drummer that would have been a different story. RVP

  • Completely agree with you. You and Mike are like chalk and cheese of the drum world, he's very focused on speed, rudiments and getting in that pocket. While I feel your videos are more about groove, experimentation and having an awesome time. You're both equally impressive drummers! =D

  • Very nice little lesson...thanks a bunch!

  • hey vanz, whats the name of the past video that your talkin about in this one, for the fill cuz i wanna watch it but couldnt find it easy

  • Ride Variations talked about that pattern I believe. RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • hehe

    you are funny

    it was really tasty

    thanks for comming back

  • Awesome! Love your lessons. Can`t wait for the streaming lessons.

  • MOAR cowbell lol! Love watchin these leasons! Wish i lived in a place i could practice them lol!

  • Great to see you back Randy - I put a clean shirt on to watch out of respect for your own efforts. To those who dont know RVP - your drumming is about to become fun. And Mike J. - yea I know Mike - good drummer, good teacher, good guy. We all have our own styles and if you have any understanding at all you will learn from everyone. I teach a national sylabus in England and still learn a lot from RVP and MY and all the guys on drummerworld who help us all.

  • Great simple fill for a newbie like me. I just started playing less than a year ago and your videos have been a huge help although I'm still pretty bad! I look forward to the streaming lessons!

  • 5:30

... What's that, your cell phone buzzing?

  • Turning my wireless mic on and off.

  • its a button he presses to activate his drum mics and deactivate the mic thats picking up his voice.. and vice versa :)

  • sweet man, its great to have online lessons, great job, and your funny too!

  • How do you count out each hit in that fill? (the original one with the ride hit.

  • The hits are 1&2&3&4

The & of 4 is an 8th note rest. RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • you should consider asking people to make a name for that free online thing.

    maybe vanz drumming corner ?XD

  • Not a bad idea.

  • Welcome back. Thanks for the great DVD and your lessons.

  • Randy is the MAN!!!

  • Visit Vanz!

    I like that.

and that face after you played the cowbell was awesome xD

    thanks vanz

  • look at the guy all dressed up

  • how about "The RVP Rundown" for your stream name?

  • Van, I have missed this welcome back! I forgot just how funny you are. Godspeed Paul

  • hey van, im building my own drum studio at the moment.. and what are the boards behind you called? do they stop the sound echoing? (because i have soundproofing in the wall just not on the outside)...

  • I will talk about it in one of my videos since I have had several people ask about it. RVP

  • Cool! New studio looks great!!! Great vid.

  • look at the guy all dressed up

  • Thanks for the help!

Keep the videos coming! There awesome!

  • I don't think you talk too fast at all. In fact I like the quick pace as you move through the lesson. If you are talking too fast for people to keep up, it's a video, they can always go back.

  • look at the guy all dressed up.

  • more cowbell, more cowbell!

    xD.

    Nice new angle for filming.

    Can't wait the next.

  • Ahaha yeah yeah MORE COWBELL MORE COWBELL we all love the cowbell! :D

I like you better than him anyways.
