Milton DeLugg actually wrote this one (Frank Loesser created the lyrics), and he intitially featured it on "BROADWAY OPEN HOUSE" [his combo was the "house band"] in the summer of 1950. He later used it as the closing theme for Herb Shriner's "TWO FOR THE MONEY", as he was also that show's musical director.

this reminds me of driving in the car with my grandpa. I can almost hear him singing this. I found a tape in his car with this song on it and a whole bunch of other classics.
For those who may care, Soup and Fish is an English expression meaning formal wear, specifically white tie and tails. Lawrence Welk would have loved this one.
Its very strange listening to this record on the original 78rpm. Then comming here, and hearing it on this. The record is not only alot better, but makes this feel as if i am in slow-motion. O.o Great video!
Great song, I immensely enjoyed it and would like to thank wilown01 for posting it. I've been trying to find this exact song for a while and it's good to finally have found it.
This song is used in a episode of the tv-series Angel. Episode 2 in the second season called "Are You Now or Have You Ever Been". It's a flashback episode from the 50's, where the main character Angel lives in a hotel in LA. A man in the next room listens to this song on his gramophone. Then he takes a gun and shoots himself, which causes the record to skip on the gramophone. No one reacts to this. It's a very good episode, you should watch it.
Thats correct season 2 episode 2, i think "are you now or have you ever been" was voted second or first by angel fans as one of the best episodes in the series.
Splendid sounds from a simpler time.

I remember when this song was on the radio. Perry was a very good clean singer. Those were the days.

Way back when, one of my teaching colleagues played this song as an morning wakeup for his sixth graders. They thought he was nuts and they loved it.

My mother had this 45 and I remember my brother and I playing this all the time before we got into late 1960's contemporary music!!!

"Lawrence Welk would have loved this one".
He did, which is probably why they covered it on their Perry Como tribute episode!

@CarlDuke Thanks for the info! I always thought that line was a little incongruous. And thanks to wilown01 for such a loving and detailed tribute.

Unbelievably, this song was most recently recorded by The Wiggles. You can watch that version on this site as well.

The Doris Day and Kay Starr versions are also highly listenable and were big hits for them.
