And a huge solar flare comes and knocks out all of our electronics and society reverts back to the dark ages......I'll put my money on a four legged horse anyway!
The price is steep but consider the benefits. Aside from excellent savings on gas, the electric engine is virtually maintenance-free. Transmission is also much simpler because electric engines can easily handle 20k rpm (unlike gas engines which blow up at around 8k rpm), so less transmission headaches.
I really hope they get it right this time because I'm very disappointed with GM otherwise.
As with any new high demand item, cost will be high initially, and will drop as it gets further into mass production.
The US is offering a $7,500 tax deduction for this car. If we start seeing $4/gal gas again, and if this car is released at around $35,000, it may very well be cheaper in the long run than a $15,000 gas car. Electricity gives you more miles per dollar. It's just a question of at what point does the fuel cost savings justify the higher inititial purchase price.
Thank you California for requiring the manufacture of zero emission cars in 2003 which forced GM and Toyota to prove that the plug-in car is viable today!
