  • I'm getting tired of all these "video format" tests.....I can't pick up the audio half the time....so what's going on?

  • My gosh is his seat far away.

  • Should of won tonight :I

  • el maestro, elmejor compositor de ost de la historia del cine....

  • Why do they put him so far back. He was obviously going to win.

  • Bah, the house orchestra butchered that.

  • Totally deserved it, he made the movie so much better with the music.

  • JOHN WILLIAMS IS THE MAN!!!!!!!

  • I so remember that star wars score and close encounters score playing on my parents huge floor model magnavox Radio/8track? record player when I was a kid and hearing that music reverberate through our house. That music and those old players had a beauty all their own. Also those music and movies ended an era of crappy movies with shit music scores. Anyone here remember going to the show in 1977 and hearing this star wars score open up and jumping in their seats? I do.

  • Hey, that first trumpet is off.

  • He should MOST DEFINITELY have won for his score for "The Empire Strikes Back," without question. Just think of "The Emperial March" as well as Yoda's theme and the ending credit medley. "Star Wars" should have won "Best Picture" for 1977 as well, but that's another story.

  • He should've won for Raiders of the Lost Ark as well.

  • I have actually never seen this. Wow. Big Thanx.

  • J.W. is the man.

  • @lonelygnome1 Because he wanted to. (CSI "yeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!" is cued)

  • it may have been a Trojan who thought of Star Wars, but it was a BRUIN who made it rock!

  • Henry Manciini gives an Oscar to John Williams

  • @MajCinematic Well, you can't, but I feel that Star Wars is a strong score in terms of thematic significance and the layers of symbolism within the notes of the themes. Close Encounters is a brilliant score, but Star Wars will still be a score which is a little more memorable.

  • oh my god, john williams is so great! 5 oscars!!!!

  • he himself is a composed men...so contained and serene...like his music!

  • I don't want to be the only devil's advocate... but can anybody say King's Row? There are really better scores, Star Wars is only the most recognized. Not that it's bad in any way, but methinks it to be a tad overrated...

  • @jg2904

    Get out!

  • One question, why did they put John Williams all the way in the back!? 0:45

  • Star Wars - Greatest Movie of All Time

Lion King - Second Best, but Greatest Animation Of All time

  • @theone225 Lion King? Is it better than Citizen Kane Score? Better than Jaws? Better than E.T. Better than Superman, Better than Wizard of Oz? Gone With the Wind? Better than Jurassic Park...and the list goes on and on..I can personally think of 300 scores better than that Hans ZIP shit.....

  • @theone225 My thoughts exactly!

  • so gracious and humble, yet he could easily be the most arrogant man in Hollywood and no one would blame him for it

  • dude .... star wars is still chaging lot of generation of humans.. u can belive that? damn man ... it's so f... cking awesome. respect john w. & george L. !! they're real but real jesus and god. ty misters for you genious mind , ty ,ty ty.

  • John Williams and Hans Zimmer are my favorite conductors

  • I Love How John Williams Strutted Along With The Music!!! XD

  • homage to the gustav holst's planets...

  • @horozcorc I LOVE when people proof themselves their stupidity or their ignorance. Thank you for this marvelous comment.

  • i liked when scores had a melody...

  • @azwel Yeah doesn't happen too often anymore. Zimmer's Dark Knight score was praised, and I have it, but to be honest it's pretty boring and very repetitive. As far as Motifs go Elfman's Hulk was alright, but nothing beats great melodies and developed themes. Williams is a master of that. So was Poledouris and Goldsmith.

  • Binary Sunset is the greatest piece of music ever written, by anyone.

  • Most deserved Oscar the world has ever seen.

  • Why did she look into the envelope? It was very obvious which one would win

  • STAR WARS FTW FTW FTW

  • Masterpiece!

  • lol..imagine if he got pissed that "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" won.

    "WTF!!! Yea, yea thanks alot"

  • He should've won a decade's worth of Oscars for Star Wars score alone!

  • Okay, if your nominated in the same category for two different films in the same year, surely your one of the greatest ever.

  • Outrageous to see Johnny Green here! Long time conductor of the MGM orchestra and composer of the song Body and Soul.

    WOW

  • He's so awesome he's his own rival.

  • One of the many reasons why I love John Williams music, it's because his music is so old school and hearkens back to the glorious Golden Age of Hollywood days of Max Steiner and Erich Korngold; along with non- film score composers like Gustav Holst and Richard Strauss.

  • John Williams deserved every Oscar he got. He is a genious and very nice person.

Can anyone tell me, who are the other two gentlemen? One is the great Henry Mancini and the other one?

  • @Csongor08 - the other is Johnny Green...

  • He deserves all Oscars for all the music he does in his films.

  • @FATE522 So true...

  • reminds me of the two and a half men episode where carly is a nominee :-)))

but archi baldwin won :( ^^

  • A very classy speach

  • whao , double nomination for john williams , though close encounters was more technical challenging then star wars

  • Very marvelous.

  • No film composer in the history of the medium has ever consistently and passionately reinvented and mastered the effect of exact, haunting scores and the art of perfectly and eerily assisting the story and understanding of the film itself. John Williams' composing brilliance doesn't merely provide a backdrop of entertainment and wonder to the films that they grace, but it co-defines the film for the audience seamlessly, making the film altogether less of a power without it!

  • Has anyone ever deserved it more?

I think we all know the answer to that.

  • Bernard Herrmann was probably the best for Psycho score. The screeching violins in the shower scene just made it.

  • The great irony is to hear how badly conducted his incredible overture is when he's not standing in front of the orchestra like he is in recent years. The drag, the timing...

  • best composer ever. But Superman was better :-)

  • The other nominees need not even have showed up.

  • Did you guys know he got nominated for 45 oscars???? He won 5!!

  • @90sambabam2, Alfred Newman earned 47 nominations with 9 wins (I think it's nine).

Although not all of those nominations were for Original Dramatic Score. As much as I admire Williams, I do think it seems easier for him to be nominated than any other composer of the last 50 years. Some composers have to achieve masterworks to get nominated. Not to take anything away from Williams.

  • @90sambabam2 And by then, that was his third. HIs second for Original Score after Jaws (his first win was for adapting Fiddler on the Roof). HIs first was four years later (E.T.) and his fifth was nine years after that (Schindler's LIst). Still a bit weird that he hasn't gotten more.

  • @90sambabam2 - yep - second only to Walt Disney for the most nominations received (tied with Alfred Newman, who won 9 times)

  • @90sambabam2

he should of won all of them!

  • I like his music a lot, what other composers am I gonna like then that are similar to him?

  • he also should of won for superman the next year

  • Do you have Jerry Goldsmith's win from The Omen 1976?

  • John Williams is the best film music composer ever.

All of His scores are moving and true.

It's really nice to see Him so young xd Wish He could live forever, so I could listen to His music all my life.

  • Genius.

  • John Williams receiving an Oscar from Henry Mancini. Too much epicness from the two of them :D

  • John Williams...would of won with either one...

  • This is a history moment.

  • Henry Mancini kicks ass!

  • I'm amazed John Williams didn't "cancel" himself off with two nominations in the same year...someone else could have "sneaked" in there and taken it from him. BUT as history has it he could do no wrong in 1978. (Note that the "Oscar" is for the previous year's work 1977)

  • The only serious competitor he had for that award was himself...

one of the best scores in the history of cinema....

  • Snap.. Snap.. "And the winner is!"

  • He must won the Oscar for the score of Harry Potter XD

I CAN 'T LIVE WITHOUT HEDWIG'S THEME, BUCKBEAK'S FLIGHT AND FAWKES THE PHOENIX!!!

  • @OFreakGirlO No Howard Shore won the Oscar that year for LOTR Fellowship of the Ring

  • what a cold speech!!!!!!!! no feelings, it seems that he was in a hurry and didn't want that oscar...

  • That's Williams...he is a very polite and reserved gentleman, it isn't that he didn't feel, he just doesn't openly express emotions, doesn't wear it on his sleeve. He's a quiet person.

  • Absolute genius!

  • john williams has written everything! he's so amazing!

  • John Williams thinks that CEOTK is one of his best scores!!!

  • I have to say it ... (I'm a huge John Williams fan) How could he pass up a hug (or possibly a kiss) from Olivia Newton-John? That's Nuckin Futz!!!! (and best score ever, of course)

  • StarWars, Indiana Jones,Harry Potter, Jurasic Park,Home Alone this guy will go down in histoy as the best music composer ever a legend

  • I want to see him accepting his Oscar for JAWS.

That score is a true MASTERPIECE.

  • I want to see him accepting his oscar for JAWS.

That score is a true MASTERPIECE.

  • can you imagine? being called up for an Oscar, your most memorable theme shaking the hall as you walk through aisles full of appreciative applauding juggernauts?

  • Wow, the house orchestra took the title theme at a really slow tempo. No suprise, it's a tough score.

  • man he looks young.

  • But, it's not original. Type in Kings Row.

  • @TheOnlyLipBomb George Lucas said he wanted something along the lines of Kings Row.

  • this is one of the most important oscar wins I think I can imagine

  • With the coldness of a genius who is thinking towards his next hit; improvement after improvement- John Williams gift to world is beyond a mere comparison and logistic appreciation.

  • Hearing the theme play while he walked up to the stage gave me chills. I can't imagine how crazy it must have been to have lived through the original Star Wars craze!

  • short and a sweet speech, y cant they all be like that

  • John Williams is a fuckin G

  • Not is only the music from a film, is part of the music of the world history

  • Maestro!

  • Lol nominated twice in the same ceremony.

  • i hate sci-fiction but i have to admit starwars is the best movie of all time, and a lot of credit goes to the sound track.

  • I have waited for a Oscar video of John Williams for a ling time, thanx for uploading :D

  • ...Basterdizations of both orchestra and...?

  • Comment removed

  • fuck you then

  • Really??? lol. Then what is???

  • Best composer in history!

  • I've noticed that Williams keeps his award speeches short and to the point. He never beats around the bush.

  • oh, stfu. do u always try to sound like the smartest douche in the room?

  • this is the altumet price in cinema...star wars will be beter then the atheistic star trek......ja

  • Star Wars, one of the best movies and best scores ever!!!

  • Ninguna cantidad de premios podrá hacer comparación con su genio.

  • Best composer ever.

  • @MandelbudetReturns

John Williams is one of many best composers! There are others out there as well!

  • Actually second best composer. Erich Wolfgang Korngold is still #1

  • Olivia!! so gorgeous!

  • GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • the master jedi of the music

  • he like 45 nominations right? he is a genius.

  • I love John Williams. Are there any more clips of him accepting his other Oscars?

  • He must have like 30.

  • I'd really love to see him recieving the oscar for Schindlers List

  • Best score ever

  • Agree.

  • @steinover Yip. I think a close second would be Poledouris's Conan or Elfman's Edward Scissorhands.

  • @steinover No, Howard Shore's The Lord of The Rings score is the best

  • @lordtufty does anyone even remember that?

  • @lordtufty U stupid!!!

  • @lordtufty yeah if you want to fall alseep listen to lord of the rings

  • @lordtufty

It's an exact copy of the Lord of the Rings symphony, ir should have won best adapted score... maybe.

  • @MountDoomPictures ...what are you talking about? The LOTR symphony isn't really anything, it's just the best parts from the scores played in a concert. The symphony came AFTER the movies, and the only reason it even exists is because of the popularity of the original film scores.

Also, @mhaze210, funny you should say that, because John Williams has actually said that Close Encounters is his favorite of all his scores! Rightly so, though, it's a true masterpiece.

  • OMG this is so old!

Anyway, John Williams is definitely the best of the bests! He's made so many memorable themes for legendary movies.....Best composer of all time IMO.

  • This man is a GENIUS! SO talented.

  • I'm still mad'cuz he didn't win for the INDIANA JONES movies, which are his best.

  • yea but u gotta admit theres alot more people who know the star wars theme even if they dont like it

  • Bravo, Maestro Williams!

  • Truly the best modern composer of our time! All the movies he composed would have been nothing without his music.

I was sad to see him leave Harry Potter but no matter, he created its theme and thats what people remember!

  • John Williams thinks that CEOTK is one of his best scores, along with Schindler's List.

HE never mentioned Star Wars...... IT IS a popular choice. I infact would not even put Star Wars in the ton ten of Williams Best.

  • What means CEOTK??? :P

  • @ENRIQUE881 - CEOTK = Close Encounters of the Third Kind. As with so many others, I also personally consider this to be William's finest score.

  • @UFOSPACE1999

    Oh, come on.

I listened to the Death Star battle sequence on its own, without pictures, and found myself in tears.

His score for Star Wars will be one of the last that is appreciated before the end of film music (which is only a couple of decades away at most).

  • As if there was actually a time when John Williams was seated at the back of theatre...

  • PRICELESS!!!

  • Interesting that, at first, he greeted the gentlemen, but the didn't greet Olivia Newton-John.

  • Actually, the two men are friends and greeted JW first as Oliva stepped back. He hugged Olivia as he left the stage.

  • Very deserved!

    John Williams is a genius!

  • This man is the undisputed king of film composers. No one else will ever compare.

  • john williams and jerry goldsmith were master in 1977 after...

  • Greatest theme ever!!

  • John Williams is the best composer ever!!
