See we're supposed to pass on the right. In the U.S., the left lane is for driving a little faster than the other lanes. (Well, technically the far left lane is for carpool and motorcyclists.) In my city, the lanes are 7 lanes wide. Even if there was no speed limit here, traffic would still be congested and you'd be slowing down every second. Plus you save on gas driving slower anyway. I just let people pass me.
not on the left lane!!! dont use the left lane...not with 100kmh!!!! you can use it when you drive about 200kmh....i hate it when there are some idiots going so damn slow on this lane...
I would stay on the right lane far more often than you did. I lived in a rural area of Germany and it is very common to see cars driving in excess of 210 km/h (135 mph). They all still would get back to the right because there are always somebody wanting to go faster. Staying on the left can get you a heavy fine.
Americans always think of the Autobahn as whole and are often surprised, when I tell them oh yah we have Autobahns in rural areas without speed limit but those in metropolitain areas for sure won't be without or can you drive on the I-state surrounding Columbus Ohio as fast as you wish? Surprise Surprise;)
Well if you drive on the Autobahn in an industrial area called Ruhrgebiet with 16 million inhabs you should not wonder about speed limits an traffic, isn't it? Daaah! Try the A 7 Wuerzburg to Ulm almost no speed limits ... I often use it and have a regular cruising speed of 180-210 km/h. But still mind the few speed limits, because they are set up due to dangerous curves. Generally spoken: In Germany you have to know the Autobahn where you can speed and also the time you can speed >
Actually, Mary you are NOT legal at all! Driving on the autobahn, bundes strasse or land strasse it is NOT legal to drive with a camera in your hand or a cell phone (handi) to your ear.
No, it's not. The several years I lived in Germany ALL 'distracted or inattentive driving' (actual traffic law terms) is illegal AND if you are in a collision, your insurance company can refuse to cover liability, EVEN IF you are the sole vehicle in that accident. If you are caught on a speed camera ('geblitzt') drinking coffee, cola, etc. you get two fines, one for speeding and the other for 'distracted driving.'
Recon - Yes, exactly... I wanted to eliminate certain stereotypes people have of the German Autobahn with this video. And thanks for the tip - I was actually in the process of getting my German Driver's License at the time - thus the exaggerated looks over the shoulder.
"Sheiss-egal" is how it's spelled and you're right - it means "I don't care in the least bit." You'd actually say "Das ist mir Scheiss-egal."
Today two friends of me and I did a trip to Solingen, Hohenlimburg (Hagen), Essen and Münster to visit some German funfairs. Enroute we encountered more sections of highway with a speedlimit (80, 100 or 120) than without.
Anyway, we had a lovely day and it was worth the 650km I did today.
The speedlimits are typical Ruhrgebiet, I think... in this area, the Autobahns are more concentrated than in some other parts of Germany, and there's also a ton of construction going on. Solingen (or was it Remscheid?) was actually where I bought my car that's in the video. :)
Since the past 2 years I've been all over Western Germany (Hannover, Bremen, Vechta, the entire Ruhrgebiet, Paderborn, etc.) But Hohenlimburg is a name I haven't heared in a long time. It's been a while since I've been there. I guess since 2007. :O
Hey Mary, nice video. You're so right about what most people abroad think about the autobahn. It's not always without limit.
A little tip: when switching lanes, don't watch that far over your shoulders and use mirrors instead. Only watch over your shoulders for people driving next to you to eliminate the 'blindspot'. :)
OK, OK, I take back the deserve to die part. But, he does need to know the difference between being funny and being evil. My sincerest apologies to you and the confused Argentine. patometal180283, (how do you say in South America) OLE, OLE, OLE OLE! Mary's not that bad a driver, OK!
I would agree that holding a camera while driving fast (especially on the motorway) is not a good idea. But then before you call someone a typical stupid American, try to do some research (right here on YouTube) on how many stupid Germans do exactly the same.
Also, on the autobahn you have to keep right unless you want to pass someone. Of course, American visitors are immune from this rule :) They can wonder in the fast lane whenever they want until someone doesn't rear-end them going 100 km/h faster.
Yes, I'm well aware of this rule. :) One thing that drives me insane when I'm in the States is people "hanging out" in the left lane. The traffic flow is much more efficient and orderly here in Germany.
sorry but are you FUCKING CRAZY to record yourself while driving ?
this is the reason for accidents and then WE ( germans ) will be punished when we will get a speed limit
