DJG has a universal subject and it gives lots of emotional touches to most people.
Nevertheless, I have to say that Only Koreans can understand its delicate lines(Very sad). Korean has unique language system compare to the system of other languages. Someone say this is the main reason that no Korean Novels and Poets won the Novel Prize yet, though Korea also have many good novels and poets.
In addition, you have to know culture & history of old Korea in order to understand DJG very well.
