@marquis0r It depends on your sb. Which sb do you have? Which game did you try? Are you using my cable? Not all the games support midi through the joystick port since it's not fully MPU-401 compatible, but I recall at least SQ4 works with SBPRO2 ISA when I tried without anything special. You need to configure the port 330 for the midi if it's not automatically done, some pnp perhaps if not ISA, this depends on your card.
I would love it if you could record some (if the game supports it, that is) from the awesome game Tyrian 2000! Preferrably the first stage. Would that be possible?
@PIKACHU49386 Nope, but maybe I'll do a video later. I think duke3d doesn't really have support for MT-32, but instead the music was made for sound canvas, but I have that too so let's see...
I used to own one of these, I can't remember how many papers I had to deliver to afford it. I had it when I was 14, and bought it myself. Was so proud of myself. All my friends and I would get together and just be amazed at the music quality out of the thing. Even today, the MT-32/LAPC-1/SCC-1/Etc line of Roland cards and modules are incredible sound quality.
and this didn't become a de-facto standard (such as GM or Adlib) because??? this is amazing... beats the crap out of even Today's over-used GM Patches
@decod31 Hi. Would it be possible to connect the mt-32 to the soundblaster's MIDI port, e.g.? Can you explain your set-up (hardware, connections, cables, etc). Cheers. PS - Excellent demo of the MT-32's capabilities.
@peddersoldchap It's possible. I put a link in the description of this video to a "pinout"-picture of a cable I made in the past for SB. As I recall it worked fine for most of the games, but the compatibility was not 100% as through Roland SCC-1 midi-port. Also there might be some differences between different models of SB so you'll just have to try. The cable is very simple though.
@peddersoldchap Perhaps I'll make video later... I have some ISA sound cards in my retro PC. SB AWE 32, Roland SCC-1, Gravis Ultrasound. The regular cards are connected to a mixer with 3.5mm stereo to 2x 6.35mm jacks. The MT-32 and CM-32L are connected with a regular MIDI->mini-DIN cable to SCC-1 MIDI-port and the modules have 2x mono 6.35mm jacks going to the mixer. The rest is regular PA wiring, mostly TSR, XLR and speakon. This is followed by EQ, X-over and couple of amps ~2kW.
For anyone with a good General Midi device (like a SC-55), the game supports that as well as the MT-32. I recommend trying both in game to see which sound you prefer.
This was made by using just the microphone of the camcorder. Close to those big speakers which I indeed use with MT-32. It gives relatively nice sound this way.

Played music not writed for Roland MT-32. Not good video. Its like a MIDI file created on Sony Ericsson K790 phone and played on Yamaha MIDI chip (e.g. FLY MC100 phone). Sounds will be sux.
I recently bought the KQ And SQ collections off of Steam for 15 bucks for each plus the new Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition. Somehow, they work on Vista. I mean, even with DOSbox, that's amazing. I do notice, oddly, though, that the older games work better than the newer ones.
Sorry, I didn't mean that. Writing things like that is a habit of mine.
What I would really like to say is: you should do a full playthrough of SQIV on that computer with that machine connected to it. It's nice to see DOS games played on an actual DOS computer.
It sounds bloody amazing! :D I'm half-considering getting a used MT-32 maybe of ebay, but the question remains, how can I connect the sucker up to my Vista machine?
Also I take it you're using the disk version of SQ4?
Standard dosbox doesn't have MT-32 emulation built into it, but there exists a version that has been incorporated with it. However it doesn't always work so well and requires ROM dumps from the original hardware (which exist, but are warez).
If you are interested there is some discussion about in my other SQ4 intro video (which uses emulation).
I have had one since 1988... I have over 800 edited and created sounds for this and it D series brothers - see my ebay listing - Pro Sounds for MT32/D10/D110 !
Perhaps the saddest part when I listen to the MT32 is that the Mac version of Sierra and LucasArts games had sound quality equal or very close to the MT32.
I always cringe now in Mac OS X when I have to resort to ScummVM and DOSBox to play old Sierra and LucasArts adventure games because the SoundBlaster/Adlib garbage is ridiculously bad.
Of course, I could play the Mac versions in BasiliskII or Sheepshaver but those Mac emulators are terrible. :/
If you set the game to General MIDI and use software synth it'll sound as good as anything in your old mac. There's no reason to use Adlib/SB in games that support other options.
Just did some double checking... I'm using a version of DOSBox complied from the latest binaries that's a pre-release of 0.73. The above procedure doesn't work for 0.72, as it doesn't have the necessary CoreMIDI patch.
Lots more good music on for instance the x-wing games or sam n max games.. I have a Roland SC-88Pro (which also includes the GM/MT-32 soundbank).. Good stuff.
Sweet LORD, that is the most awesome thing I have ever seen or heard in some time! Any chance you could maybe play the junkyard theme from Space Quest III or the "Madonna" Rocket Bar theme from Space Quest I VGA with that thing turned on? I'm extremely curious now.
Perhaps I can do that the next time I'll visit my parents house where my retro stuff is located.
In the mean time check out the quest studios sierra music pages if you haven't. They have digital recordings of MT-32 music including the "Rocket Bar". I've put a link in the description.
Bought it after it came out early 1988. 8-months later Roland released the much better D110. Had a lot of fun with this box though. At that price there was noting else that came close to its features. No editing, unless you had an editor for the Atari. All was lost though when switched off. Those were the days. Nowadays you get Logic Studio for less dollars, but it seemed more exciting back in 1988, because it was so new.
i was 12 , stuck with an adlib soundcard. And allways wondered what the space quests sounded like with the mt-32. TY for showing me exactly that! And now i'm glad i didn't know what i was missing at the time, it would have driven me crazy!
I have had mine for nearly 20 years! I also sell custom set of Pro edited voice patches for the MT32. You'll be amazed at how versatile this unit is! Look on eBay or drop me a line.

MIDI. MT-32 has regular DIN connectors.

MT-32 is connected with midi connector (large 5-pin) so you need a MIDI interface and suitable cable. After that it's easy.
This is indeed the disk version.
decod31 3 years ago
you can run it with dosbox - it allows to use mt-32 emulation

It's possible to hook up an MT-32 to OS X, by doing the following;
Set [midi] mpu401=true, intelligent=true, and device=coremidi in DOSbox preferences
Connect the MT-32's MIDI input to the mac with a USB MIDI adapter cable
Connect the MT-32's mono left and right outputs to the mac's line in port with a Hosa 1/8 in. Stereo to Dual 1/4 in. Mono Cable.
Set up the drivers for the USB adapter on the mac, use Rogue Amoeba's LineIn to have your computer output MT-32 sound, and you're done! (phew)
