@wolftc They add earmarks, either to gain majority vote by appealing to "on the fence" senators or to gain personal interest (say a certain politician has his hand in some sort of research) he'd vote for an earmark to gain funding on his project. Also, so many earmarks could be thrown in so that the party who once supported the bill would turn it down, now, because of the additions.

You must mean thanks to all the wonderful Democrats that added all those unnecessary add ons to the bill that is going to cost this country BILLIONS. It sounds like Sen McCain wants to stop unneeded spending. Why do politicians add earmarks to bills that would not pass on their own?
