@patnais102 The African system of slavery was actually a punishment in which one was forced to work for a certain period of time to pay off their debt. Africans didn’t have jails and capital punishment was only used in severe cases, so for offenses one would be forced into servitude. The Portuguese initially got their slaves through raiding villages. Arabs also conducted lots of slave raids.
