I have a fairly eclectic taste in music, but I've never listened to this "death metal" or whatever you call it before. I've watched six different videos now, from six different bands. Can anyone tell me why they all sound alike? The voices, the music, the "rhythm", if you can call it that. I'm not trying to troll, I really want to know why they all sound interchangeable. Heck, they even mostly look alike.

You can't just 'jump' into the death metal genre... IF a person has never tasted soda before how will they be able to differentiate between all the different flavors? All the flavors would taste the same!(carbonated and sweet).

I suggest you listen to some light metal first and work your way up. Start with light metal like sevendust or disturbed...maybe Fear Factory?

Once you can 'tolerate' screaming start listening to bands like As I Lay Dying, Killswitch Engage, All that remains. (Bands that incorporate screaming and singing). Eventually you'll be able to differentiate between all the different types of metal and choose one that suites you. I personally love the melodic metal bands like Graveworm Amon amarth & in flames.
