It's amazing how rental and housing prices have gone up. Even in the really crappy areas like in downtown or the hood it can get pretty pricey. Not exactly hugely expensive, but still in the thousands of dollars range. Congrats on 2 years!
@HaleyMary - It's really quite scary. 1 person making minimum wage ($9.25/hour) can only afford a $75,000 mortgage. $75K today can barely buy you a tiny bachelor suite these days.
$50 a month, and I'll come and check the smoke detector batteries myself. --While teaching, one of my students stole my cell phone. I was convinced it was one of 2 people. 2 yrs later, the real thief's sister was my student, and told me what her brother had done. Needless to say, I hadn't even considered her brother as a possible candidate. I'm glad I didn't accuse anybody without evidence. I didn't do anything about her brother either once I found out. He had already dropped out of school. :(
@dafttool - Lol, $50 a month does sound great... but on the other hand I don't want to be responsible for all the dirty work. I can just see a situation where my mom will be like "This is your fault - this was your idea", so I need to be cautious :)
It's pretty crazy how those things happen. With my situation I was in the shower for all of 30 minutes and someone entered the house, noticed I was the only one home, and went in my room to take the money out of my pants :( Totally sucked.
A landlord LOL? That is a difficult task to pull off renting rooms it takes a special person and a lot of luck. From what I have seen in the world ther are so many things that have occured to good honest people renting rooms. In your case I think you would do well getting a larger house like in the movie Forrest Gump I believe anything you want to do you will do it sucessfully. Keep up the good work glad to hear things are working out we have some rough road ahead it is gonna be tough for all.
@cdltpx - a lot of people are pretty shocked when they as what I do and I reply "I'm a landlord". It's often a total conversation killer! lol. Ultimately I'd love to have a 10 bedroom house with 3 car garage. That would just be such a cool house to run! It would probably take over $1 million to build what I want though ;)
@landongendur Well that type of living is some of the greenest form of living you are providing a service that is sorely needed. You may have found your calling couple your art degree with a passion for realestate and you could be the next Conrad Hilton. I wish everyone could have your sucess in this field it certianly keep more trees in the forrest. As someone that has lived out a truck for years I appreciated a place with running water and climate control it was like being rich.
