I am still laughing about the comment about there not being any angels. But anyway, this lady has been a blessing to me. I remember listening to Mildred Falls backing Mahalia, then going and sitting down at my piano (me, not Mildred), and the first chord I played I gave up and walked away, I had no idea how to get that sound. But after much more listening to Mahalia and with the help of this DVD... yeah, we are getting there. thank you!

I bought this video, she's very good.... but she doesn't exlain a lot of things thoroughly enough. It's ok for me because I can play by ear, but for other beginners it might to tough to follow her.

And, she does some really cool stuff with her left hand, adding in lots of extra notes that gives her playing an amazing rhythm. What is she doing? Unfortunately, she doesn't really explain it.

I'm not for a even one second suggesting that she didn't do the best she could. She is a master teacher - that is obvious. And she is a genius player. The fact that she can sing and play at the same time, improvising both, astounds me. I can't even talk and play at the same time. Still, I would have liked to see more exactly what she was doing in her left hand - all those very fast little notes - to produce such amazing rhythm.

On the other hand, each individual has their own character that is unique, is it possible to teach that? I don't think so. Once you learn the basics of her style you have to put your own signiture on it.

So - after watching these DVDs several times, I am absolutely staggered that each time she demonstrates one of the hymns, she plays something different - and each time it is beautiful and sounds fantastic. How does she do that? I am a classical pianist - I cannot do what she does. She must have an immense knowledge of theory, on top of having been brought up with the styles of Gospel and having it infused in her blood. She's just phenomenal.

The bass is so huge. It's as if she's somehow doubling what her left hand is playing an EXTRA octave. It reminds me of one of those pedal pianos - the ones with a pedalboard - such a full sound. ARGH - I love it! I think I'm going crazy with obsession :-\

She is AMAZING. It's crazy to think that one person can produce such a powerful sound with just a voice and a piano. Her sense of rhythm is phenomenal. Her effortless riffs and interludes demonstrate such a well-honed craft--the result of a lifetime of immersion in traditional black gospel music no doubt. LOVE it!
