this is why John Frusciante is one of the greatests of all time, he can make you feel whatever he wants with his music. not that many people will be able to understand but thats whats what makes music so powerful. dont always listen to the radio. Johns the man
It's probably a good thing John Frusciante hasn't written an autobiography, you'd need to have a very strong mind indeed not to be driven insane reading it...
My favorite Beattles song is "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", but at least for the first part of this song, I think that guitar IS actually weeping!! How awful (Sad awful, not technical, I know nothing about music)
as much as i like his psychedelic stuff around this time, it hurts to listen to it knowing what a horrible state he was in with drug use and all. I mean some of his recordings you hear him coughing and you know his health is deteriorating. So glad he got through it and is still blessing the world with his music today!
@skip2mylou05 When he made this album he was only smoking weed. John has said many times that he didn't record this album during his heroin days, only Smiles From the Streets You Hold was.
@7h3tSLDR02 That is actually incorrect. The first part of the album (Ninadra Lades) was recorded while he still was in the band. The second part (Usually Just A T-Shirt) was recorded after he quit the band, so he was on heroin while recording the second part. As for Smiles From The Streets You Hold, that record was recorded from when he was 17 all the way to around 1995/1996 :)
@Sangachin This is not true. The second part was recorded just before he quit the band. The only song that was made after he quit is Running Away Into You.
@skip2mylou05 He was actually doing the tour for bssm when Niandra Lades and Usually Just a T-Shirt was recorded, atleast the untitled tracks the rest was when he they were recording bssm (except for running away into you which was made after he left the band). He was just starting to try heroin when this album was made but he wasn't like he was in the 1994 interviews.
@Udovica69 I love everything else he does, I'm not deaf but maybe my ears don't work in the same way as yours.. Was just my opinion on the recording I taught thats what the comment section is for.. My bad, I wont use it again.......
@DELFYonceagain hey, no thats not anthony..when john first joined the band in the late 80's his hair was kinda reddish orange, and he was a lot healtier and clean and also had a very fit body...i think thats y u were confusing him with anthony..kinda looks like him but no :)
Am I the only one that doesn't like this? I'm a huge fan of John Frusciante's work but this just sounds like the product of a coke head. Its been over a decade but I'm glad he cleaned up.
@lonewolf604 its strange.. it even sounds like heroin.. kinda shows wat he was goin through so its interesting and deep in that way.. but the actually music is bad.. but the feeling and soul is still there as in every other song he plays...
3:00 onwards is so heartfelt and painful. especially that little sreech thingy at 3:26. made my heart twist, something that no song has done before in that way.
This song is oozing with both despair and wonder. True talent is at work when he can put you in the same state of mind as he was when he created his art
im a recovering heroin addict from detroit and it just kills me how some of these people (some) can just harness the beauty of the pleasure and struggle almost transcribing exactly but a tinge of (slightly out of tune, bad recording, etc.) it made me want to use drugs because i too though opiates where a key facter to a lot of great music. my girlfriends dad at the time was in a popular 90's alternative band sponge and chad from the chilli pepers was a good friend his. i was 17 shootin dope.
Don't be so negative. There's still good music, and always will be, nothing can destroy real talent, because it emanates from a place that exists outside time and mundane conditions.
musics version of abstract art. Amazingly beautiful. How does he know what its gona sound like backwards when he plays if forwards??????? Does he just know???? Or was It more of an educated guess??
this is some great cosmic experimental music, if the fiber that hold time and space together had a sound I imagine this is how it would sound... that sounds trippy when I read it..
WTF is this? This is backwards? There may be somehing wrong cause everyone else loves this but to me, this is just jibberish (and i've been playing guitar for about 10 years). Like a heroin overdose.
@powa2dapeople no fx exactly, just 2 guitar parts, the electric lead part would have been recorded, then the tape flipped over so it plays backwards while the acoustic part was recorded, so you end up with chords and reversed electric lead.
@kostil.. jesus will have a good laugh when he brings this up in conversation to you one day..talk about an awkward moment...john frusiante is the best guitar player since hendrix, even Jesus knows that.
It pisses me how people are people are commenting on how John looks like Jesus or how Jesus looks like John. It might be amusing the first time you hear it, but it's getting really old. Just shut up and enjoy the beautiful music.
@MrMcPang Since when is it not allowed to say wether he looks like jesus or not. I'm just saying that you do the exact same thing as them you are talking about.
@AndreasINCA I'm not saying that it is not allowed. I'm just saying it's annoying when you see the same thing over and over - 'John looks like Jesus or John IS Jesus'. It's like people don't have anything original to say any more. It's even more annoying when one of the top rated comments suggests that John>Jesus. As I said before, I believe that music and religion should be perceived seperately. Get what I'm saying now?
@MrMcPang Well does it really matter? I mean who cares.. I just found it funny that you said they should enjoy the music instead of writing those things. You just did the exact same thing. People can write what the want man.
@k0stil why is it wrong for someone to think that someone else (jesus) didnt exist 2000 years ago? i dont care if your 10th generation child thinks i exist or not. get fucked lolskates!
@muffmanmuff Jaguars are sweet guitars... not sure how appreciating that makes you a "guitar nerd". Although you used the term neck beard, so I'm guessing you're trolling.
@SweetKooshy man people like you have been saying shit like this since the first generation of rock, and guess what, it is still here. in my spirit at least
@SweetKooshy Well, im no frusciante, but im trying my best. He's my idol! who knows? Maybe you'll see me on a stage covering him, and playing my own songs, which i hope you will be able to relate to. And maybe im a fucking tard dreaming too much, idk... But i feel same way!
@janoska667 I don't see anything embarrassing at all. The point of the music isn't that it's mainstream or sounds like anything anyone's ever heard. Yes, it's strange. But the point is that John picks up a guitar and allows his emotions to run through it and brings us music from his other worldly dimension. Some of us are able to appreciate that
@janoska667 you were an embarrassment to your family, im sorry, noone ever loved you. So sad... what will the world do now? oh ya nothing because all you are is an insignificant piece of useless atoms, combined to create what is negativity. If john frusciante made a decision to go down the path of drugs once in his life , thats his choice, and not yours to judge. To be honest the drugs is what made empyrean what it is today, go ahead and find something wrong with that album...
@SweetKooshy What a cliche. Every fucking generation says this. Don't get me wrong, most music today sucks, but what you fail to see is that it's always been like that. There are gems, and there's coal--16 tons(what do ya get).
@SweetKooshy I'm not like John, no one ever will be. But I am me, all I say is every human has to capability to do whatever they wish. He may have been given something, or been inspired in a way only he could be, but we can all do anything we can conceive and even things we cannot. Often with music, that is the point; there isn't one. I like to think I'm a new breed of musician, maybe if you heard what I do and see how I do it, you would be convinced there is still creativity in this world.
@SweetKooshy people have too much stuff to do these days, youtube facebook, tv etc etc etc. And the whole thing of having all partitures of all bands on line is nice and its easy to learn this way. But it makes people lack originality . salud
I wonder what the reverse version sounds like!

@SweetKooshy Sure. You wont see too many musicians almost dying from heroin and crack and releasing something this embarassing. So sad.

@SweetKooshy like rap. shit is so annoying. people are missing what real music is.

@Famous485 John Frusciante likes rap and hip-hop, it's not all bad, there's crappy rap and good rap, just like there's good rock and bad rock

But it makes people lack originality . salud
