Yeah, I've seen this version 26 times in various American productions and the marching never appeared to be something out of a Jane Fonda video like it does here. XD
However, credit to whoever stepped in and changed the steps to something more march-y since--saw the show twice last year in London and no jazzercise was present during this spectacular first act finale.
Sadly, there is now WEAVING in the 25th ann. tour!!!! It's like an updated Jane Fonda video. lololol.
@sleepyjl77 As far as I know, Les Mis is always directed with those steps during this song (in professional versions, anyway). It's because it's a rotating stage, and the actors step like that so they won't spin along with the stage (meanwhile, during this scene, Valjean and Cosette DO end up spinning along, because they are seated).
At any rate, I still smiled at your comment, because I went to the gym today, and I HAD to hold barbells while stepping in place, LOL.
@phantomdaae1981 I saw it on Broadway back in the day, and there was NO aerobics stepping. You can tell it's part of the choreography by the fact that the stage floor is not moving under their feet, and that they do the same ridiculous steps on a fixed stage on ITV. Happy that I gave you a chuckle, tho.
Les Miserables premiered @ the Barbican Theatre in London on 8 October, 1985. The show transferred to the Palace Theatre on 4 December, 1985. It remained there until April, 2004, when the show transferred to its current London home, the Queen's Theatre.
The show premiered in New York @ the Broadway Theatre on 12 March, 1987. In October, 1990, the show was transferred to the Imperial Theatre to make way for Miss Saigon. The original Broadway production of Les Miserables closed on 18 May, 2003.

Wow, this direction SUCKS. What's with the aerobics steps? They might as well be holding barbells while stepping in place.

is this the Palace Theatre?, Lighting looks different and the stage looks loads bigger and Orchestra seems fuller. than the Queens

Yes, I think this is the Palace Theatre, because it is before Les Mis closed the first time, before it's revival.
