  • Was this about Riptide or the other records though, haha. Anyway I liked the record.

  • 6 out of 10 :O You have to be kidding me!

  • The accent above the c makes it a 'ch' sound. Just an FYI for reading those bands' names. BTW, accents above s, z and a line through the letter d make them 'sh' 'zh' and 'dj' sounds respectively.

  • i love beirut, i have this album and listen to it all the time. if you like beirut, buy it. it's worth it.

  • what a handsome guy, but those oversized black eyeglasses makes him look like a total loser. like those losers that tried to fit in high school. and after they were done with high school, they continued being, not like losers anymore, but more like rejects. when are they going to learn? they must be told how to be cool. sir, those eyeglasses need to go.

  • beirut is amazing. he does what he wants. he went off by himself so he wasn't influenced by other stuff. the rip tide was plain zach, songs he wrote that was more his style. i mean i get what your saying in some parts but zach is unique and this album was about him growing up more and going home. so he is simpler (is that a word?) but it's completely him.

  • nigga fuck you beirut goes hard as fuck zack smoke that purp yezzir

  • WE DONT CARE ABOUT REVIEWS. IN A YOUTUBE MIX, WE WANT MUSIC.

  • great review man.

Oh...and you remind me of Matt Heafy.

  • 12 people are neutered

  • This came up when I was happily listening away to the Beirut YouTube mix.

    DO NOT WANT.

  • The only track i liked was east harlem

  • a hawk and a hack saw?

    what?

  • @TheBrokenFrog A Hawk and a Hacksaw. Great gypsy band. :}

  • All I can say is KEEP LISTENING TO Rip tide- it grows and grows on you. I fell in love with Beirut's other music very quickly, Rip tide has been a more gradual love, but just as intense. :)

  • Strong 5 light 6. Not a chance, this is at least a high 7 light 8.

  • Have you ever reviewed Architecture in Helsinki's Moment Bends. Not exactly brand spankin new, but I mean, hey have you heard it??? You should hear it.

  • That's true about the horn section kicking more ass on both the previous albums. GOod Analogy. Night in pAris, Week in Paris, Backpacking around europE.

  • I think that this album can be just as mournful as gulag - especially the title track.

  • 0:38

    O_O

haha, bad choice of words there...or maybe I'm just really immature...*hangs head in shame*

  • why are the top comments always about what album should be reviewed next? fuck that

i liked beirut's album. it was easy to get into and thats a plus for me

  • prurient! bermuda drain!

  • i want to ear you say that Audio Video Disco from Justice sucks

  • A review should never compare against past albums, this is a major flaw in your reviewing technique. This album was fantastic by the way, more like 8/10.

  • I think your passion is fabulous. x

  • I actually really love the album. I think that it is more lyric than music centric than the previous stuff, with Zach saying he was writing songs about really personal stuff and I'm fine with that. I also the noticed that the Eastern European sound is rather blunted this time around.

  • The title track is beautiful, and a masterpiece.

  • Come on man! You talked about foreign influence on Beirut, and not mentioned Mexico!? March of the Zapotec? Oaxaca? That's Mexico...

  • There is one song that weeps and mourns on the Rip Tide and it's the title track. That's the only song that is really emotive.

  • ANYONE SHOULD CHECK OUT CHRIST, LORD if they like beirut! :):)

  • I fucking love this album.

  • I really enjoy your reviews signor Fantano but in this case I really feel that you are selling short a great album from a great band.

Beirut's strength, for me at least, is the ability of their songs to really instill in the listener (as cheesy as this sounds) a sense of place. Whilst his previous releases evoke a sense of far-removed places like the Balkans, Mexico etc. The Rip Tide was written in and about Zach's home town of Santa Fe and it is that which he evokes.

  • @samdmkidd I feel that this reveals a musical & compositional maturity on tracks like Goshen, Port of Call and the stunning opener A Candle's Fire. There is nuance to the arrangements on this record that produce (again excuse the cheese) a really organic but still distinctly Beirut sound. I understand that some people (myself included) really enjoyed the the point of difference that Zach's use of exotic sounds gave his music but if you look past that you will find some of his finest writing yet

  • RHCP

    I'm With You

    Might aswell like...

  • im a big fan of beirut, and this is exactly how I feel about the new album compared to the others!!! the new album is.. like .. a burger without the beirut beef...

i don't know how to describe it.. but it is missing their..... epic style?

    =(

  • I BEG OF YOU. I BEG OF YOU! Please Review Hugh Lauries new blues album 'Let Them Talk' I shall send a message to you, If people liked it so he could see it aswell that would be lovley :)

  • In the Aeroplane over the sea. DO IT.

  • I can hear what you're saying, but I still loved this CD, this guy just writes great music. I had to listen to it a couple of times, then I was just into it. I listen to it all the time now. The only thing I think he could do to displease me is not write a lot more music.

  • I really appreciate how you give a lot of context for the records reviewed, in terms of the artist's career.

  • Do In The Aeroplane Over The Sea next

  • Review Pepper Rabbit- Red Velvet Snowball

  • They have... they have #LOL good review bro, without question the best Loyd Grossman sounding alternative music reviewer here on youtube.

  • I hate Cal Chuchesta

  • @Palimeris Bananas

  • @WeEatBrainz Are delicious?

  • @Palimeris Nonsense

  • Streamed this thing on NPR three times this morning. My first exposure to Beirut. I really, really enjoyed it. I'm even more pumped to go back now, and check out the earlier work, given how you talked about it.

  • selling my ticket

  • It made me so happy to see the Shabazz Palaces record clipped up on this review and you even gave it a shout! Also, is it just me or does anybody else hear new elements on that record every time it goes for a spin? One more thing...have you ever considered going by the name Palaceer Fantano?

  • @nickdelsesto aoty for me man

  • "None of them OOM-PA-PA." I like that description.

  • Atari Teenage Riot

  • That intro........ I'm speechless.

No but really Anthony I can't wait to see your opinion on WTT and how much everyone in the world disagrees with it haha!

  • EAST HARLEM IS A FANTASTIC SONG

  • I love this album. It's very concise and focused, but it could be a little more bombastic, which is why I love Beirut's older albums.

  • Review Shlohmo's Bad Vibes? It just came out!

  • I heard it twice today, and I immediately liked every song;however, it could have been a little more ambitious. Feel you brother.

  • watch the throne

  • Review Disasterpeace - Level

  • Watch the Throne tomorrow. but im sure you know that already.

  • review throne watch!

  • I hear ya Tony, but sometimes I think you can get a bit too preoccupied with "progression."

If you want a new sound, I say listen to a new band. I wonder how many artists will have listened to your reviews and rolled their eyes over how much you expect them to sound "new." THEY'RE THE SAME PEOPLE!

I'd hate to be an artists waylaid with having to sound "fresh." I think it could make for bad music. Course if you can afford new gear every time you make a new album you'll sound "fresh" easily.

  • @Sondar9 it's impossible to formulate a good opinion of it after a few hours, and I doubt Anthony stayed up anticipating its release, so some probably only heard it a few hours ago, patience is a virtue my friend.

  • WATCH THE THRONE

  • EXCELLENT review!

  • also maybe Trivium's In Waves? They're decent, besides all the hate they get

  • Maybe its because it's my first time listening to Beirut, but this is at the moment my favorite record this year, it's just beautiful. Now after the review I cant wait to listen his previous stuff.

  • Review a La Dispute album

  • Watch the Throne!

  • Review Watch The Throne!

  • Please review the EARL album iv been dying to here your input about him

  • WATCH THE THRONE!!!

  • I watched this review with " Mount Wroclai (Idle Days) " playing in the background

  • TRACK REVIEW No Mercy - Where Do You Go ?

  • Not sure if you read comments this late, but everyone seems to be commenting on WTT and ignoring Beirut so I thought I'd just say that I LOVED March of the Zapotec, but nothing else I've heard from him has really lived up to that for me, and I don't think I'll bother with The Rip Tide.

  • If you're willing to review another Post-Hardcore album, i suggest:

    Fake History - Letlive.

  • watch the throne do it up

    You friggin sloth GOSH!!

    Tina, EAT YOUR FOOD!

  • WATCH THE THRONE REVIEW....

  • Admire The Throne

  • Please review Watch the Throne if you get a chance :)

  • I can say this is Beirut's most poppy "non-European" sounding album yet, but that doesn't take away from the new songs that he has on The Rip Tide. I appreciate anything that Zac puts out, and I think it's a pretty decent album.

Sometimes you can't always expect the same magic twice...

  • cal chuchesta squints like he has down syndrome

  • Thanks for making music reviews FUN, Anthony! USA USA USA FOREVER. Gotta love Cal. Oh, and I'll be sure to pick up The Rip Tide. Zach Condon has the voice of an angel!

  • Watch the throne!!!

  • I think I'm going to try out A Hawk and A Hacksaw.

  • @ScarvoHumanoid0012

What nonsense. Fantano does great reviews, but it's only his opinion. And here's a newsflash: opinions differ between people. Do you really need someone else deciding for you whether an album is even worth listening to? Give it a listen and decide for yourself.

  • Watch The Throne? I think you're maybe going to like it!

  • Review Watch The Throne... shit i was waiting for it.

  • You should review Goodbye Bread by Ty Segall!

  • @Ironman935 I second that. I would love if you reviewed Goodbye Bread by Ty Segall.

  • watch the throne dont need a review i made my mind up its a really good listen and just as good as my dark twisted fanatasy listened the songs on youtube already

  • He Isnt Going To Like Watch The Throne -.- xD..except for a couple of tracks maybe...i expect a five out of ten for that album...i really like it but i dont think anthony will...

  • Watch The Throne is actually pretty decent, screw the hype. I avoided reading up on it and am pleasantly surprised. I get the feeling Anthony will be overly harsh on it though :/

  • WATCH THE THRONE!

  • Review Watch the Throne...PLZ...i gotta hear your thoughts on it..!

  • Watch the Throne.

  • don't underestimate simplicity in any form

  • You LOVE that shirt.

  • USA. USA. USA. USA. USA.

  • The Rip Tide is an album that changes mood to a chilled, romantic and simple direction. Beirut's art, talent and magic are still there...It is more like an 8 to me

  • Anthony, please do a review of Shining - VII: Född förlorare, i know that you like more ambitious black metal music so when you will have time, please check it out
