It depends on the situation. If the cops were walking a beat in my neighborhood and just wanted to get acquainted, I'd likely let them in for a cup of coffee. If they acted like they were there to snoop, they'd get the door closed on them. I've never had a cop come to my door except one time when they were looking for a guy who just robbed the Subway sandwich shop. I told them I would get in contact with them if I saw anyone suspicious. We have pretty good cops here in general.
this is how cops SHOULD act but they don't. they like to try to give the impression that can still come inside or that you just need to let them in because it not that big of a deal, cops try to work around the law socially by acting like they are looking out for you safety even if that means protecting you from yourself.
And it is the way they are trained, and the court officers (Judges, Attorneys, etc) know it. Bear that in mind when dealing with them. Its one thing if a person has a support network to fall back on when they are wrongly accused of something, mistreated by police, etc...its another entirely when dealing with people who are essentially engaged in conspiracy to defraud the public. Take parking tickets, for instance. Where else in history do we see people writing bills which increase over time at such a ludicrous rate? People stand for this by doing nothing at all when they are subjected to this, but complain about it relentlessly. Complacency becomes status quo.
As a result, the greedy people running the corporatised govt branches assume tacit approval by the people (technically true) and so push the envelope a little further each time their wives and children demand new jewels, vacations, cars, toys, etc. If people only took a moment to think about what their complacency supports, I think they'd be properly outraged so as to stand up and take action. I had the police show up at my door wanting to search my home one time. First thing I said to them was " Do you have a search warrant? " They said " You must have something to hide." But all things aside, people that know and who exercise their rights and liberties are not necessarily criminals. If you believe your rights are being violated, you still have the right to see their badges and their name tags, even if they have a warrant, which you can use as evidence against them. I had the police show up at my door wanting to search my home one time. First thing I said to them was " Do you have a search warrant? " They said " You must have something to hide." I said told them " No, I'm just exercising my rights. Do you have a search warrant? ' They finally wound up having to leave, because they didn't have one. Although, the way things are going. We will probably lose that right too. They keep making new laws that violate our constitution. Soon we will be a police state.

Inviting them in (even with nothing to hide) can lead to trouble such as them conviently "finding" contraband in your home. Regardless of whether the police frame you with contraband, find any contraband that you may or may not know is in your home etc, it is all leading to one thing. That one thing? A big long search of your home, invasion of privacy, a huge mess, and potential trouble.

One night around 2AM, cops were at my next door neighbor's house due to an altercation there. I was surprised when,one of them actually rang my doorbell at that time. I opened the window next to my door, asked if I could help him. He actually asked me if I could open the door. I said I don't open my door to anyone at that time and I asked him what he wanted.
