Worked at the cape when this happened, had a lot of friends in the blockhouse which is very close to the pad and right under where all the nice flaming sparkly debris was falling. They could hear all the debris hitting the roof and most of the cars in the parking lot were burned up and destroyed. They are consumate professionals, no one freaked out but were dismayed the launch vehicle was lost.
Eupehmisms like this are part of the culture... as if saying the word "explosion" brings bad luck. At one time, the launch commentator had no monitor, or a panel of instruments, and couldn't be sure what had happened. That's why the LC described the Challenger explosion a few seconds later as "obviously, a major malfunction" ... he only saw the dials go crazy, and didn't realize the vehicle had exploded.
@GimiGlider Absolutely not. Panicking professionals means panicking civilians which means dead civilians. If the pros are calm, then the civvies are calm too.
The anomaly was ofcourse not that the rocket exploded that everybody always thinks. All bigger rockets are equipped with a fail safe so it should instantly be destroyed if anything happens. One good example is if the guidance system malfunctioning so the rocket wont follow the specified track. To prevent it from hitting citys and areas like that so will it be instantly destroyed so debris wont fall where ppl can be hurt. In this case several cars were totalled but no personnel was hurt though.
this was the last time a big block chevy was used in these rockets, had nothing but trouble out of them, pretty sure this one broke a rod. from this time on, big block fords and an occasional turboed cleveland has been used with no problems what so ever. the hi po 289 can not be used because of g-suit technology not being able to protect the pilots from blacking out. the hi po 289 is just too powerful.
That was one helluva sight from Jetty Park. Unbelievable...we were certain a lot of people were dead because back then, it was easier for reporters and others to get pretty close...that's what overconfidence will do for you.
Crawl back into your kitchen and do your job, woman, how can you continue your "announcement" without any reaction of suprise?!!!...YOU DUMB BROAD, YOU!!!
@phambo101 PA announcers aren't supposed to panic Einstein. Maybe you'd have pulled a Herb Morrison & made an ass of yourself but don't project that onto people who know what they're doing.
@CoDGunner1 Possibly, but I would think an amateur wouldn't say, "There has been an anomaly..." they would say something like "Holy mother of DOOM! Look at that huge *%$# explosion!"
I wish the anomaly's i had in my high school physics projects were this exciting.
