I love David Gilmour, but I feel most of his solo albums are a bit too cheesy.
I wish he would make an entire CD of orchestral rock EXACTLY like this without the singing. He says more with 3 or 4 notes than any other guitar player.
About Face is prolly some of my most favorite work from Sir Dave. I was into all their stuff prior to 1984 but after About Face came out, I could never (and still CAN never) stop listening to DG's sound and base all other players talents against his. The man is absolutely beyond human.
I can see how his sound was beginning to develop into that heard in A Momentary Lapse of Reason. Not many enjoy that album, but i like just about everything Gilmour has touched.
I had all but forgotten this song after all these years, but from the first note, I remembered every little nuance as though I had only heard it yesterday. Dave's answer to Hendrix's Star Spangled Banner. Needs some cannon.
@Brando2600 it was pretty split. at first it was syd barret with waters. then when barret was out of the pink, david gilmour started writing too. but it was waters who wrote virtually all of the wall and animals.
@Brando2600 I love Gilmour, but I find it funny how so many people try and call Gilmour Floyd. He is definitely not Floyd. Not to make it sound like waters is the greatest member, but The Wall was almost entirely his idea, by many it is considered THE defining Pink Floyd album, yet Gilmour is Floyd? When Roger took over most of the writing they became superstars. His amazing concepts .
@Brando2600 Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall, and the very underrated Final Cut. Also Pro's and Cons of Hitchiking, and Amused to Death, both amazing solo albums by Roger Waters with amazing concepts that are more to the experimental awesome of Pink Floyd, then Gilmours solo albums, and even his albums with Floyd without Roger sound less on par. Although still great. I think their old stuff when Gilmour was more involved were very underrated though.
@Brando2600 from Animals through The Final Cut Waters wrote 95%. Saucerful through Wish you Were Here it's probably closer to 45 or 55%. They did a lot of co-writing during this period so it's tough to put solid numbers to it.
pink floyd, this is stil it. just with dave instead of pink on the name. even rich wrights solos can carry pink floyd as the name. you can take the people out of the band, even take the name out but you cant take the pink floyd out of the people.
love this song<333333333

Floyd is best when it is Gilmour/Waters together...kind of yin and yang kind of thing.
