  • Im addicted to this game and I still watched this video. LOL. It's really hard to get synched up since people don't play at the same pace.

Ive also noticed that the "teacher" tends to lose the "teach" game. Often badly. Haha.

  • @AtheistaNET I lose pretty regularily, I will have to blame it on the fact that I'm teaching next time, lol :)

  • I watch a ton of board-gaming videos and I can safely say that yours are the clearest and most detailed I've found so far. Great work! I'm hooked!

  • @NaturalTwentyFilms Wow, we're very pleased to hear that. Thanks!

  • Hey man, loved the video. Me and a friend have a bet about your accent. Me says u are irish and my friend tells me you are canadian. Let me know who won the bet :P

  • @anirudhkitt I am Canadian. Hope you didn't bet too much money :)

  • @WatchItPlayed Hey Rodney, thanks for the reply!! Oh well, i wish u had a bit of irish in u so i could argue with my friend. By the way just found your channel. Me and our friends had been trying to play seven wonders since the time we bought it at a deal during thanksgiving. After 20 mins of ur video, we could finally play it after almost 3 months. Subscribed and will spread the word!!

  • @anirudhkitt That is the kind of feedback I love to read. Glad you are finally able to get to the good part of enjoying your game now!

  • Wow very helpful video! Sometimes your voice reminded me of a faster-speaking Brian Williams.

  • @fanofuna The American or Canadian Brian Williams? :)

  • thanks a lot for making this video. it helped a lot :)

  • @hicsw12 I love hearing that we helped out our fellow gamers! Have fun with 7 Wonders!

  • hey, hello, it's me again; I come with a question this time, I was looking more into this game and I found out about the "2 player's cards" that come with the game, and I was wondering what are they for?

  • @drgarushi In the 2 player game, you set things up a little differently. You have a "third" civilization that is not controlled by anyone player, but instead, each player takes turns plaing cards for that civilization. The other cards, help you set up and keep track of the fake third player.

  • I meant it, I finished up watching you and the kids playing the full game and am now very confident I'm ready for a local board game group I found that is going to play 7 Wonders next week. Thank you so very much for all the time you and your family put into these. You really have it figured out, from excellent quality video and audio to amazingly well laid out logical progression of the rules and then to watch you all play a full game solidifies all the rules and progression of play.

  • This was one of the best instructional videos I've ever seen on any topic! You have a new fan.

  • @jerseyj2 That is incredible generous praise. Thank you. I really hope that our show will be clear and helpful. I'm never quite sure if we hit the mark, so I appreciate the feedback!

  • Hi Rodney,

Great show! It was thanks to your episodes that I bought Smallworld in order to trick my GF into learning to love boardgames. Much obliged!

Quick favour. Could you tell me what each of the games are during your intro to the videos? Thanks!

  • @thegreatmerga I'm glad to help anyone get into the hobby, even if it requires some trickery :) Glad it worked out for you.

The games are Small World, Mansions of Madness (from our old channel), Wrath of Ashardalon and Space Hulk 3rd Edition.

  • Hey Rodney,

I just wanted to suggest to do a poll like you did in Smallworld on wordpress.

It seems that 7 wonders would be perfect for this format, cause there are no complex decisions available like in Smallworld. Just 7 cards which will gett less every round.

  • @H4msterbacke and you dont have to count postings/thumbs in youtube :)

  • @H4msterbacke Getting my website up and running is another priority for me as I start to work on this series more. For the play through, we will be playing a little more quickly than 1 card per round. We're probabaly going to do an age per video, meaning this series won't last terribly long (a Watch It Played first!). I do hope to have something up soon, which will allow for easier polling (and counting, for me!)

  • Rules Question: Can you deny a neighbor from sharing commerce with you?

  • @shawnw86 You cannot. In the next video, you will see an example of resources that your neighbours can NOT buy from you, but the brown and grey cards, are always available and can't be denied to your neighbours, if they have the coin to pay for it.

  • I will tell you now, THE CARD HAS BEEN PICKED - expect the video to be online early Thursday!

Thanks for all the votes everyone.

  • I say we go in guns blazing and start off with that Guard Tower.

If we don't lord Lukos of Rhodos will certainly build it on his next turn and we'll be hard pressed to defend against them should war break out. We'll have to pay queen Andreanis of Babylon, unfortunately, but we will sabotage her nefarious plans at a later stage.

  • @AdenineMonkey I love when you role play :)

  • Keep the lumber yard :)

  • Awesome video. Rules explanations are actually my favorite part of the series. One question, in the unlikely event that you don't get enough resources to build the first stage of the wonder, can you do it in later stages and "catch up" or only build in the stage you are in? I know you have to do them in order though.

  • @dkyzar Excellent question! I answer this at the start of the next episode and wish I had mentioned this during the first episode. You can build any stage of your wonder at any point (as long as it is in order), so you could wait until the 3rd afge and then over 3 turns build every stage of your wonder, if you wanted! Hope that helps (and glad you like the instruction vids!!)

  • Comment removed

  • Though it does happen, rarely do you buy from neighbors, ignore yellow. Wood; would be nice to get stage one wonder right away, but stone is probably best bet in case the wood/stone card shows in your hand. with your wonder the best bet is to get stage 2 built with level 1 cards. taking a military hit early perhaps, but allowing you to build cards for free asap, AND only spending a 1st card on it. wood or stone, I'd gamble stone, then possibly buy ONE resource at a time from a neighbor later.

  • I've played this game several times, but I'm too mezmerized to skip to game play...MUST...WATCH....RULLEEEZZZZ

    good presentation Rodney. ;)

  • I think you really want Stone Pit. Both your opponents are in need of Wood and outside of the Wonder requirements, Wood is not needed in multiples. Stone, however, is one ressource that you will often want to have as a 2x or 3x of. You're better off letting someone else spend a pick on Lumberyard. Either of your neighbor has a Timber Yard in hand that they are likely to want to pick right away, unless it's paired with the Clay Pit (which is better for both your opponents)

  • This means that you will already have 2x of each available (using trade) and can turn to more important needs, as your Wonder stages will be open. You'll just be needing an Ore for that. Your left neighbor then either picks Wood or Guard Tower (if he built Clay Pit or Clay Pool) and your right neighbor likely picks Glasswork or a Trading Post. You're setup to build Baths, or jump on Glassworks in the unlikely case Hanging Gardens didn't (then you are going to shoot for the Green cards).

  • Another good pick would be Glassworks then shoot for Science strategy, but this is very risky because Babylon is to your left (and will have first pick of Science cards 2 out of 3 Ages). Stone Pit is the safer pick and will allow you to branch out either Blue/Red or Blue/Green based on how the cards pan out.

  • I meant Babylon is to your right.

  • Then you try to get the Marketplace for the opponent who got Timber Yard, and you'll be in a much better position than if you were going all in on Wood. Next Age you keep an eye out for the double Stone card so you get to build everything that needs Stone without relying on neighbors.

  • @XBlackFlagX Great strategy breakdown. I really appreciate that. You gave me some ideas I hadn't considered!

  • My first choice would be to get the lumber yard. You can guarantee some points by building part of your wonder.

  • I willl definitely be at Gencon. Can't wait to play a boardgame with you. FYI..if you haven't been to Gencon before, be prepared for 30,000 nerds. Far too many of whom don't understand the meaning of personal hygene.

  • @davidflegel Same here! I hope we can get some great gaming in while we're there!

  • I think i'd go for the Bath's card, get some nice early victory points

Great video as usual, very entertaining. Iv'e finely caught up on all your video's and can now join in :]

  • @khiane117 Sometimes I feel like I should be putting these videos out faster, but other times I figure people who are trying to catch up are probably glad I'm not putting these out every day.

  • But in the 'Caravansery' it just shows resources, but not a cost. Does that mean you can use your neighbor's shown resources for free? Or does that mean you can produce them? Anyway, thanks again for the video!

  • Great video, and it looks like Andrea has excellent taste in games. I always get excited when games don't involve dice rolls (or use them minimally like Small World). This game mechanic kind of reminds me of Puerto Rico (The best designed game I've ever played). I do have one question though: I don't understand what the 'caravansery' does. You talk about its cost @24:47 but fail to mention what good it does. In the marketplace you can purchase your neighbor's resources at the cost shown...

  • @rocknec1 No worries, the Caravanserey will get explained in the next video. I just didn't want to overwhelm everyone with more stuff in that video. Good question though!

  • I vote for the Lumber Yard. Its early, you should have some resources to draw from, and your wonder requires it. Cornering the market on this resource might bring you a few coins too.

  • I would go for the lumber yard. Since all wonders in the game require wood in the first or second stage, making this one rare will probably net you some income. Since stone is only in your own wonder, chances exist you will be able to pick this the second time this hand comes around. Nice extra of taking wood is that you have the necessary resources to buy the caravansery in the second age.

  • I was always on the fence about this game. The theme never appealed to me, but I do like the gameplay. This playthrough will definitely help my decision. I say go with the Lumber Yard to build your first phase of your wonder.

  • @oneANGRYelf I hope this series helps. There is also an expansion which I hear is good. I think I'll pick it up soon.

  • I'd either play wood or stone (but then again, I'm watching these videos to learn the game). Stone could earn you some coins because nobody else has it. Wood could let you build stage 1 of the wonder at any point. I appreciate the video - I understand the rules, but seeing them in action has been helpful, especially with the funny icons. :) Thanks for sharing and I look forward to the next video.

  • @paschott The next video will be coming this week!

  • Never played this but the wood looks like a good bet. You can build the first stage of your wonder and get a monopoly on wood. It would be great to get the second stage of your wonder in time for a free play in the first age.

  • @barneyhawes I like the way you're thinking.

  • Great video walkthrough of a great game. I particularly enjoyed the card tower-building bit! :)

  • @admiralacf I enjoyed building it too! :)

  • Nice video. Looking forward to this series.

  • I would go with the Stone Pit

  • Super great video. Our group just started playing this game.

The various reasons for selecting certain cards are already given by others. I would either take stone (offense) or brick (defense).

Special Case, 6th turn: when you are down to a hand of 2 cards, you select one for play and the last one is discarded. Player aid and back of rulebook explains symbols, very useful during play. [minor point at 18:25, the military cards you showed for Luke are all Age II cards, not present in Age I.]

  • @Sylvicolus Yes :) Good point about those Military cards - just threw them in for the example, but that could have given new players the impression that could happen during the first age, which thankfully, it can't!

  • These videos are getting better and better Rodney, keep up the great work! I've never played 7 Wonders before, though I've heard good things. Can't wait to see how the game plays out.

  • @jakecoldren Hope you like it, I have a guess of how it will play out (I'll lose!)

  • This game reminds me of a game "Citadel", only more complicated.

Anyway, this looks awesome and I look forward to watch this season of Watch it Played.

Also, either buy Stone Pit or Glassworks.

  • Hi, I'm from the Netherlands and I don't own a credit card or paypal account and was wondering whether there is another option of contributing to the fundraiser. I love the show and would like to make a small donation. I really like the Small World Series, and this series is also looking very promising.

I hope you enjoy making the series as much as I like watching them.

    Greetings from Holland,

    Julian

  • @Twigwalker Hello in Holand! Sadly, I think the only way you can donate is through Paypal and Credit Card. However, even if you can't donate, we're glad to have you watching!

  • I'm thinking starting the game off by showing a little military strength might not be a bad Idea... so the military card has my vote. LOVED the video!

  • @josephcomings since the military card requires resources you need to buy, I wouldn't consider it now.

  • @KBoyen silly me.

  • hi again. i'd say this is your best intro vid yet. loved the 'fake' ending. from my experience as a Magic player, i'm gonna suggest a 'hate-drafting' move, which means you choose a card that would be valuable to other players. in this case, take the brick (Guard Tower). both Luke and Andrea need it to build their wonders AND i'm sure Luke is going to go the military route so denying him Military can't hurt AND it can't hurt to have some Military ourselves.

  • (my secondary pick would be the Stone Pit which would give us stone AND allow us to pick up that 3 pt Baths when it swings back around.)

  • Take the stone. Stone is a rarer resource than wood in a 3 player game. It will give you a huge head start in military, especially when up against Rhodes. It will make Rhodes have a much more difficult time completing their wonder. Don't get the trading post, you should only take those towards the end of the round if your neighbors have resources that you're not going to be able to get. Another option is the glassworks if you want to pursue a science track early, but it is safer to take stone.

  • @vagabondriot Appreciate the explanation on why to take Stone for those of us who aren't as familiar with the game. :)

  • @vagabondriot I don't understand why you say that stone is rarer in a 3 player game. in both ages one and two, there is an equal amount of resources of each type available.

  • @KBoyen You have the same number of cards producing them but there are many more cards with 2 or 3 Stone than cards with 2 Wood (and there is only Magistrate Guild with 3 Wood, which you could always just build free). Your own Wonder requirements are easily fulfilled because you only need two of each, you're probably better off getting the second Wood by trade (since someone else is bound to build some Wood producing cards on this board) or with Timber Yard (Stone/Wood) if it gets passed to you.

  • Love the videos, as always. I think you forgot to include a close-up of the East Trading Post card.

  • Fantastic vid. Fantastic channel. Keep it up, I really enjoy your videos (spent all weekend watching the LOTR game!)

  • @unforgivingedges Glad your enjoying it. The LOTR play through was one I really enjoyed doing, even though the Zombie Spearman never got his revenge.

  • Great video, 7 Wonders looks to be a promising game. I don't think you showed the East Trading Post in a closeup, either that or one of the resources seems like the choice to make. Wood would get us the 1st stage of our Wonder, stone or glass would allow us to diversify. I think it comes down to either the Lumber Yard or East Trading Post, I think I'd go for the Lumber Yard.

  • @ItCameFromUpNorth Yeah, I goofed already. I've added an annotation for people to pay attention, because I forgot to show the trading post twice.

  • This is yet another example of one of your excellent videos. Besides being informative, they're fun and funny. I've devoted a LOT of time to watching all of your videos that you've posted here (including MoM). I can't think of another person who is talented enough to entice me to spend that much time watching home videos. And I've loved EVERY minute of it.

I can't donate right now, but I'm hoping that after I get a couple more paychecks under my belt, I'll be able to help.

  • @WhiteKnight83858385 After December is a pretty bad time for me to be asking for money. I'm sure everyone is feeling a little tapped out!

Glad you're still enjoying the show :)

  • I would say build the Glassworks, but then again i always lose in this game =P

  • @lordbravura Hey, me too!!

  • I would have to say your best bet would be to go with the East Trading Post for your first card not in big need of resources at the moment and in future times that Trading Post is going to help you out alot, either that or allow your enemy's to use it against you.

  • Make an Arkham Horror review. Please

  • @Monkeynishimo I'm thinking I'll make this a perk in my fundraiser. If we reach a certain amount I will commit to doing Arkham Horror. That game will be a beast to do - but it would be a fun challenge.

  • Great video. I've never watched one of your series before, but now I'm riveted and will probably go back and watch some of the past ones. Keep it up.

As for the card, I would suggest Glassblower as it gives a resource that no one else produces right now, and we could sell later.

  • @Gastel Great to have a new viewer!! Thanks for joining us and glad you are enjoying it so far!

  • yeah take the wood :)

  • @H4msterbacke There have been a lot of reccomendations for wood!

  • First off, Rodney, my daughter and I have been watching your videos and love them. We are certainly going to get onto the IndieGoGo site and give you a donation soon. Keep up the great work.

As for what card to play, when you dealt out your hand wasn't there a marketplace of some sort?? The kind that give you the ability to buy resources for less than 2 gold from your neighbours? I couldn't quite make it out but playing a card like that early in the game might help us in the long run

    Chewy

  • @Chewy2754 You are right. Thanks for pointing this out. I've made an annotation to the video for future videos, mentioning that the Commerce card is an option.

And tell your daughter, the Smith family says hi and thanks for watching!

  • Hi, i have a question, you have to build the first stage of your wonder with the first deck of cards? or you can build them any time in the game?

Take the Lumber Yard, you can use it to build the first stage of your wonder and in the second stage you can use a card at no cost and that can be useful

  • @ericssj

You can build the stages of your wonder at any time, as long as you build them in order.

  • @Sperberus Very true. I should have clarifed this! I've added it as an annotation in the video.

  • First, great job!

Second, when you discard a card for gold and the seventh card, is it face-down? I guess I just assumed it was face-up.

Third, BATHS! You'll get more resources later. Get the 3 victory points now!

  • Another great starter Rodney. I'm already sold. :D

Take the lumber yard. I'm basing my choice from playing a lot civilization/city builder video games. You always need wood.

  • Take glass and try getting a market ... as a rare resource we cant let it fly away .....

  • Fantastic presentation of the game rules! I was never bored even though I understand the rules (although I noted something I might have been doing wrong). Also, a great idea about interactive play by voting in the comments. I especially appreciated that you included some "gotchas" or common misunderstandings that players could potentially experience which really adds value to the presentation. Only thing I noticed worth adding was that any stage of a wonder can be built in any age. Great job!

  • @troyiusmaximus I remember thinking I wanted to mention that! Thanks for pointing that out, I will bring this up in the next video as a reminder and add an annotation to this video.

  • Start simple, take the Stonepit

  • Your teaching skills are, bar-none, the BEST I've seen! You speak very clearly, have a great understanding of the game and your logic (in teaching) is phenomenal! I admire the way you systematically go thru the game while adding little 'what-not-to-do's' along the way. I play this game a lot, it is one of my favorites! Kudos to you and your thinking - your instructional abilities are precise...Spock-like, if you will.

  • @chillbocamron Live long and prosper :)

  • BTW. if there are lot of stone and wood cards in the deck and not a lot of glass then maybe you should consider glass?

  • Didn't play 7W but I would do a RTS strategy style - mocro, macro, macro! :)

So in the first stages of the game collect as many wood, stone etc cards as possible. That will allow you in the later stages of the game to really take some nice cards. It would also prevent you from spending money (so you collect them to get more victory points) and maybe make your opponents to spend their coins (points) to buy stuff from you. So all in all - lumber yard, stone pit or glassworks

  • @borus1987 Yes, the popular response so far as been the resourses!

  • Take the bath... because it has the best art!

Jokes aside, I agree on taking the Wood. It will be very handy on your first and second stage. It can come handy in acquiring military as an option down the road too.

Also nice work on those transition, it keeps the video more lively and break people away from losing attention. Thumbs up.

  • @Yaoau lol, no victory points for best artwork, but there should be!

Glad to hear the transitions worked for you. I think listening to rules for 30 minutes can be a bit of a drag, so I tried to keep it moving!

  • Play the wood, so you have the option of building on the first stage of your wonder.

  • this looks realy interesting :O wish i had someone to play with if i got it.

  • @Nekobah Well, for now, you can play with us!

  • I would go for the lumber yard, it gives you an essential boost as you can get the first stage of your wonder right away (though it's really more important to get to that second stage for the special ability). Also - no one else seems to have wood, so it's a potential to grab a monopoly on it and use it for revenue later on.

  • I would play the Wood; the other two players need Wood for their Wonders, and it sets you up to get a fast Wonder upgrade to make use of that free build in each Age.
