i love watching this show. this was my dads favorite show and archie even reminds me of him a little. we used to watch this ALL time and laugh so much. my dad died of cancer last year and i would lay in bed with him when he was sick and we would watch all in the family all day. it makes me sad that he's not here anymore but i can still watch these and remember how much fun we had before he got sick :)

Gloria in this episode reminds me of my late Hungarian great-grandma. She *never* drank, but she was well known for dipping her bread in wine throughout the day.
Sad that Edith was the servant of the house even to her daughter. All of them took her for granted. Their opinions counted but her's didn't. She just kept loving them no matter what they did to her. I could hardly watch it at times because of the emotional abuse. I hated his mockery of her, his wife. It made him feel big to denagrate her. I did enjoy the scenes where she stood up for herself. Women like her weren't that uncommon. Now, young women won't put up with it! Progress.

They raise the cost of wages and as a result the cost of living to negotiate the union wage. the benefit packages are forcing union companies out of business. None of this is helpful to the economy. Of course, the best example of this in All in the Family is the one where the neighbourhood is circulating a petition to keep a "coloured" family from moving in. George Jefferson sees it and freaks out. Then he finds out the fmaily moving in is Mexican and he signs the petition. Both he and Archie work together to keep the Mexicans away.
I think this show just demonstrated absurdity by being absurd on both sides of the racial issue (i.e. with Archie Bunker and George Jefferson). In all honesty, I do not think either Archie or George were racists deep down, but liked to engage in stereotypes that they thought were harmless, but we all know can be dehumanizing and hurtful.
The show made Archie and George look like idiots when they engaged in that behavior, which I think was Norman Lear's intent. I love this show.

I know someone who had his car broken into and the police came over for the interview. Upon being invited into the house, the officer immediately began, as the victim put it, "scoping the place out, looking for something suspicious". Now of course this is an interpretation of behavior, but body language is a sort of organic truth serum. Its unfortunate that "serve and protect" sometimes turns into abuse of power.
It is on TV in New Hampshire.... Conway - Northern New hampshire on Time warner once in a while. I love the show and am always scared they will pull it in the name of political correctness but it is no more offensive than many shows today. Carrol O'Connor was a bleeding heart liberal and a great actor so it was a stretch for him to play this and he did so very well.
Because the show is so old and everyone who would watvch is too old for the demo they want to sell ads to. Reruns have a life cycle. MASH is not on local stations anymore either.
you are lucky then--but the point is in the 80s MASH was in virtually every market. But people get tired of even good shows and new reruns get in the best slots. Seinfeld is starting to fade away after 1o years of reruns.

We all know an Archie! Anyone offended lacks the ability to laugh at themselves. Come on! It was satire! Lighten up! This show poked fun at people who ignorantly stereotyped others; not at people who were stereotyped by ignorance.
A show like this on TV nowadays? Forget about it! The FCC switchboard would be inundated with complaints and short circuit! Too many crybabies would file lawsuits over hurt feelings! Professional victims are such killjoys -- they are so petty it's pathetic!

Still, you've got to admit that there is an alarming presence of neo-Archies on YT and elsewhere, not only defending his freedom of speech, but stridently expressing many of the same narrow-minded misconceptions that Lear and O'Connor had never intended to be taken seriously.

@Mattluvzunot - SO true. Anyone, of any colour can be, and often is, prejudice. White people don't have the monopoly on that.
Of course, the best example of this in All in the Family is the one where the neighbourhood is circulating a petition to keep a "coloured" family from moving in. George Jefferson sees it and freaks out. Then he finds out the fmaily moving in is Mexican and he signs the petition. Both he and Archie work together to keep the Mexicans away.

I think this show just demonstrated absurdity by being absurd on both sides of the racial issue (i.e. with Archie Bunker and George Jefferson). In all honesty, I do not think either Archie or George were racists deep down, but liked to engage in stereotypes that they thought were harmless, but we all know can be dehumanizing and hurtful.
The show made Archie and George look like idiots when they engaged in that behavior, which I think was Norman Lear's intent. I love this show.

I agree. Archie Bunker and George Jefferson characters are the reasons why I never got into watching both shows more - they both just seemed like mean and grouchy people. Which is a shame because I really liked both the Florence and Edith characters. Just my view.

I know someone who had his car broken into and the police came over for the interview. Upon being invited into the house, the officer immediately began, as the victim put it, "scoping the place out, looking for something suspicious". Now of course this is an interpretation of behavior, but body language is a sort of organic truth serum. Its unfortunate that "serve and protect" sometimes turns into abuse of power.

It is on TV in New Hampshire.... Conway - Northern New hampshire on Time warner once in a while. I love the show and am always scared they will pull it in the name of political correctness but it is no more offensive than many shows today. Carrol O'Connor was a bleeding heart liberal and a great actor so it was a stretch for him to play this and he did so very well.

Because the show is so old and everyone who would watvch is too old for the demo they want to sell ads to. Reruns have a life cycle. MASH is not on local stations anymore either.

you are lucky then--but the point is in the 80s MASH was in virtually every market. But people get tired of even good shows and new reruns get in the best slots. Seinfeld is starting to fade away after 1o years of reruns.
