I know he's from Austria, but his German accents seems quite different than any other German accent I've heard before. Does he have a strange dialect, or is the Austrian German really that different? His German sounds half German/half Dutch. Either way, his intonation seems to have little to do with the German language, the infamous sound he often makes seems to be quite unique to him. Wonder why he speaks that way? Interesting.

@TheAllimania Ah, I see. I'm not German, I'm Norwegian, but our language is also Germanic, so quite a few of our words are similar to yours. Also, I'm quite good with languages, and I did learn some German in high school, but that was six years ago. Haha! I see what you mean. 'Loweraustrianish' reminds me of how a spoken sociolect often will differ from its written original language. Norwegian written: Har ikke, gjør ikke, kan ikke. East-Oslo spoken: Hakke, gjøkke, kanke.

@TheCarlScharnberg Herr Schwarzenegger is originally from Styria - and Styrian people speak a very special variant of the German-Bavarian-Austrian dialect family. My grandmother was Carinthian, and they sound quite different I have to say. In general, Austrians tend to stretch the vowels much more than we Germans. That's what you can also hear when you listen to him.

As a native german speaker I don't mention an english accent, but he uses some english words - we think it sounds "cool" *lol*. His dialect is austrian..

@NicKingPapiChulo No he doesn't. To be a bit more precise than a view other commenters, he speaks Styrian. There is not one typical Austrian accents, there are several ones, one of these Styrian. (Btw., Graz, the second largest city of Austria, is the capitol of Styria.)

Regarding the accent: There is an Austrian joke about Styrian tourist meeting in the US, just talking slowly believe that they are talking English. In some parts of Styria it sound even more like barking of big dogs than Arnold.

@tsartodd I doubt that. Since he didnt come to tthe United States until he was an adult (speaking no English). That's why he still has an accent. If he came here when he was 5 years old, that would be a different story. As for the voice coach, I don't believe that, unless he was trying to talk with an American accent. a good example of this is Rutger Hauer, who all but eliminated his Dutch accent when he speaks in movies.
