  • Mr. Kilmer,

My sister in law has an 02 passport and the rear wiper has starter randomly running. The switch is off but Sometimes while driving and sometimes after she stops and parks it, it just runs for around 2-3 minutes then stops. Ever seen anything like that?

    Thanks,

    Neal

  • @Neeal314 yes, almost always a bad motor assembly, the contacts inside go bad, replace the whole unit.

  • @scottykilmer Thanks

  • What kind of car is this? My brother is having problems with his 1999 Ford Windstar van.

  • @daredevil22 chrysler van, but fords are pretty similar

  • What if I tried everything you said to do and the wiper's are still not working? could there be something else... Buy the way I went and bought a new motor.

  • @jgloves2smile first, you'd hot wire the motor to see if it works,If it does, then check the switch and fuses next, and pray the wiring hasn't shorted out somewhere.

  • ive got this problem with the rear windwiper , when i switch it on , just for one go like a 'flash' would be , it does its cycle like 4 times and stops then after couple of seconds something clicks in the dashboard and it goes around 2 or 3 times until it stops. what could it be?

  • @paulicapopcorn the rear motor assemblies often burn out like that, me, I'd live without it.

  • Hey Scotty, I noticed that when I pull up my wiper arm to change the wiper blade, I can wiggle it. What could be wrong? Could it be a loose wiper arm Bolt?

  • @13FravelJ yes, try tightening it first. Scotty

  • scotty my wipers when they want to. what does that mean? like sometimes they turn on, sometimes they dont. what would cause that?

  • @smitty6293 just replace the motor assembly, that's it 99 percent of the time in such a case. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer could it be the switch? its an 83 pontiac trans am

  • @smitty6293 theoretically it could be, but 99 percent it's the motor assembly itself. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer ahhhh alrite thanx scotty!

  • Love the videos, my 2000 Caravan wipers tend to not shut off after being turned on. If I cannot manage to turn them off before turning the vehicle off they will keep running for about a minute or two.Already tried to replace the controls in the van. Could it be the motor causing the problem?

  • @jbonkerz Yes, that's always a bad motor in those designs, the circuits inside burn out and do that. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer

Thanks Scotty. I picked up a replacement motor and installed it. Problem solved. :)

  • You the man Scotty. Thanks

  • Hey scotty, on my truck, my drivers side wiper bounces sometimes. its fine when its going up, but when it goes down it sometimes bounces. what could be the problem?

  • @13FravelJ put a new blade, that often does it. If not, then the linkeage is breaking down, a royal pain to fix. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer I put a set of new blades on it when I bought the truck, but the bouncing went down when I put some of the Rain- X stuff on the windshield, could I put a few layers of that on it and should that do the trick?

  • @13FravelJ yes, that often works fine. Scotty

  • hey scotty my wipers still aren't working, the fuse and linkage are good, so i hooked 2 wires from my battery to the input wires on the motor and it worked, still not working from switch every time i put them on i get a click noise, but nothin happens, seems like no power from the wires leading into the wiper motor, any suggestions will be gr8ly appreciated...... MegaDodge19

  • @MegaDodge19 those systems are relatively complex, with even computer modules operating them. I just put in a toggle switch to run em direct when I fix them , beats the heck out of going through all that engineered nightmare wiring. Scotty

  • Hey Scotty. Just wondering, my wipers work half way. I turn them on and they go up and get stuck so I have to turn the switch ,then right back off for them to go down and not come back up and get stuck. Its really fun driving in the rain..... But does that mean its the motor or the electrical?

  • @breadfann that's a bad motor 99 percent of the time. Scotty

  • hey i have a 1992 acura legend but the window in the back is not working

  • @MegaMustufa Not that big of a deal, but take the plastic crap off and check the motor by hot wiring it with power from the battery to see if it's shot. Scotyt

  • I like to put anti-seize on the shafts that hold the wiper arm. Makes them way easier to pop off later.

  • cool

  • @scottykilmer Hey Scotty, I have a question to ask you, my friend has a 94 Buick LeSabre. Anyways, the passenger side windshield wiper fluid nozzle only sprays less than a 1/4 way up the windshield, but the drivers side one is fine. I tryed cleaning out the nozzle with a pin but didn't work. Do you know what could be the problem?

  • scotty i have a few questions 1 how much would it cost to have a different colour of carpet and headliner in my car 2 i wanna either get new seats or have mine redone in leather how much does it cost to have seats reupulstried? 3 how do i remove the passenger airbag 4 how do i replace the carpet on my Door panels with either carpet of a different colour or have it done in leather and how much would it cost to have all this done? what cheaper aftermarket seats or have the factory seats redone?

  • scotty my friend has a 93 buick centry (she thinks its 93) she needs a complete new headliner how do u do that?

  • @Matthew55904 It's a pain, most body shops have people who do it professionally for a reasonable fee. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer how mcuh generally cuz she dont have any money

  • With all the respect you deserve Mr. Kilmer... Hood cowls are a pain! They should be made of some type of composite material. On the New Edge MUSTANG this is a big trouble item because it degrades with time and when it becomes brittle you usually end up breaking it to replace your windshield wipers. If I tell you the price through the dealership you will probably flip, but I'm sure you probably know around how much it is.

  • scotty your the man dude im glad theres guys like you still around, anyways i got a question, i own a 2000 cadillac deville, my car wont even start, no click no crank nothing, there is a hissing sound coming from the engine, my service anti theft system is on,, by the way my daylight running light is staying on even though the car is turned off, my driver door lost power to windows, door locks, mirror everything but passenger side works. help me pls i cant miss 2 many days of work. thanks

  • @weezyfbaby8787 You have an anti theft system problem, a cow in that thing to fix. Try another key if you have one, and take it to a GM mechanic if that doesn't work. They are not systems you can fix yourself, as they have to be recoded to work once repair parts are installed. Scotty

  • Scotty I can remember back when auto part stores used to sell refills for the wipers, today they don't anymore and sell the whole wiper with the refill in it. Do you know why they stopped doing this?

  • @moofushu People were buying new blades and said the heck with replacing the rubber because they didn't know how to replace the element. I've had people tell me wiper blades don't wear out; if that was true there would not be blades in every auto section/parts store. I replace mine in Spring and Fall.

  • @moofushu Profit in sales. Scotty

  • what did you call that thing at 3:02

  • Great vid scotty good info. However I have a 96 Neon in which the wippers come on and work but only in the low speed setting when you put it into high they stop reight where they are wether in is in mid stroke or what. Is this likly a switch going out or the motor going out? If the switch how hard is it to got to?

  • this is replacing , not fixing !

  • @TeDuaMalakie Get a grip on your panties, this is not a lesson in semantics, it's a bloody repair video. Scotty

  • its fixing by replacing Duhhh

  • Before you remove the wipers. Mark the windshield where they park with a wax pecil or the wife's eyeliner pen. That way they will be in the exact same place when refitting them..

  • @Rhin0Neil Yes, some people mark em, I use my memory in such a simple case. I'll mark cams on engine timing belt jobs, but not something this easy to remember. Scotty

  • Great video, and great energy as always, Scotty!

If you're looking for a new video idea, I need to replace the headlight/turn switch on my 1992 Honda Civic DX.

On the first cold night last winter, the lights would start to intermittently go out. Rolling the switch on/off would usually bring them back up, but now I have to roll the switch forward (after it should roll forward any more), putting extra torque on it.

I found a used switch on eBay but am worried about taking off my steering wheel.

  • @jesusali Ah, that's an easy job, it just bolts off and you whack the middle with a hammer while pushing on the wheel with your legs, and it pops right off. Scotty

  • my buicks windsheild wipers were malfunctioning becaue of this little metal tab that wasnt catching, kinda sucked gettin everything off but its fixed =D

  • Great vid!!

Whats the best way to tune a carb (Holley 750DP)

    Thanks

  • Good video, one tip you forgot to add.

You should always check if the old motor is running once you removed it from the linkage. My car's linkage was so rusted out that it wouldn't turn anymore and I changed the motor for no reason ;-(

Can we add some lube/grease to help the linkage stay functional and rust free ?

    thanks.

  • never miss me a scotty video - your the best - rock on kilmer - and keep up the grunting...lol

  • Great video as always Scotty, thanks for sharing!

  • I see you're working on a Caravan/Voyager, do you have any idea why the wipers in my moms 96 Voyager will just randomly turn themselves on even if the switch is off? They;ll usually wipe for 3 or 4 cycles then shut off halfway across the windshield. They work fine when the wiper switch is actually in the on position though.

  • @Infinitrium that is almost always a worn out wiper motor assembly, they short out internally and do that a lot. Scotty

  • I especially liked the part where you show how that arm works normally. Lots more moving parts under that plastic cowl than I thought!

Ever since you posted the clip about changing your clutch, I've been a little suspicious about how things can appear simpler than they actually are (grin). This repair seems pretty simple, however. Keep em coming, these videos are great.

  • Hey nice video. I wish it was still hot in Illinois...LOL

  • @mobes329 I'm tired of sweating in Texas, I'll take the chicago wind for a while here (though I did go to the university of illinois, and man, did it get cold in the winter.) Scotty

  • Thanks for the video Scotty. I have to be doing something wrong. For all of these years, I've always struggled getting the blade arms off (GM '87 Cutlass Ciera and '92 Century). I even bought a special tool for it, but it only ended up cracking the plastic cowl. :(

  • @youfrancis You gotta have the hands, man. Machines just bow to the master when I show up. Scotty

  • Another Great Video

  • scotty unrealted question about this video but i didnt feel like going thru ur vids to find one that is ok as u know my engine lights been on people tell me that no car should have the engine light on at 40k miles that its because its a daewoo its happening now i just want u to verify that the light can come on ANY time no matter the mileage

  • @Matthew55904 Miles on the car should really matter because , a vac leak or even the gas cap not on right could turn the light on. but i would get it checked asap just to be safe.

  • @calmini4x4 yea if i tell people that they will say only a daewoo would the a vaac leak or need a new gas cap at 40k miles i do have a locking gas cap around the house the gas caps tight but how would i know if thats teh problem?

  • @Matthew55904 Yes, lights can come on at any time, but some maintenance lights come on at certain mileage times. Not the check engine light, but other warning lights can come on at mileage intervals. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer well according the the manual no maintence is required for another 20k miles (60k miles) when they recommend the Timing belt change the oils not due for a change for anther 2k miles and i checked my Gas Cap that wasnt the problem too soon for new plugs i think is it normal for a 9yr old low milage car to have the engine light come on at 40k miles?

  • Good vid, Scotty, but next time, please, no grunting.

  • @CoolasIce2 Grunting is part of being a mechanic. Be happy I'm not swearing. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer AHAha amen Scotty, well said. Ive spent many of my younger years not knowing much about mechanics and going about it the hard way swearing and ripping skin off knuckles haha

  • @CoolasIce2 Nah, I've always found Scotty's grunts quite humorous, as I sometimes do the same thing when wrenching on my cars. Also as he mentioned that's quite tame for a mechanic! Keep up the good work, Scotty!

  • it pissed me off when my wipers stopped working 1 hour away from home because the motor was drawing too many amps and seized its self.

  • Damn chevy trucks during the 90s love to spaz out and stop in the middle of the stroke or dont turn off so i replaced mine and then my truck went to chevorlet to have the computer flashed and they said oh btw we replaced that motor because it was a recall.

  • Scotty does it again , thanks for the great tips !

  • Good stuff Scottie.

  • @keneyed209 Unfortunately that's how they sell them. I often use junk yards for such stuff. But you can try Dormans, they make a lot of aftermarket parts. Just google it or ask at your local auto parts store, they can all order dorman parts. Scotty

  • @keneyed209 try here w w w . carpartsamerica . com best of luck :)

  • @keneyed209 maybe it comes as 1.. they might not sell the linkage separate or there trying to scam you for more money..try sperious car parts like from an auto parts dealer :)

  • Another great and informative vid Scotty!

  • Okay, this is doable for me!

  • hi scotty, im really glad you made this video. i have a question thats relevant though. what do i need to repair when only the last 2 wiper speeds work (the slowest doesnt) and my wipers squeak like hell while they're on. it sounds like they're going to break. i have a suspicion its the wiper pivots, but thats from doing research on the internet. some people also say my wiper arm is broken (the one inside the car) anyways any and all help is appreciated.

  • @Ji99i3 Often they squeak just because their rubber is worn, clean em with some denatured alcohol, that works great. As for losing one speed, that's usually the motor assembly starting to break down. Scotty

  • Cool! I've never had to do this but I'm sure I will at some point in the future. Thanks.
