I like it when at around 3:50 he admits he has no idea why the uchidachi turns the blade. Sometimes I get the feeling that many sensei pretend to be all-knowing and if some information has been lost they try to come up with their own explanation. I really respect if a Japanese sensei has the guts to say "I don't know".
Yes, it is not common to find that in a teacher, but he of course has some ideas. At about 4:20 he gives a possible explanation as to why... It's not subtitled in the preview but one possibility is that if Uchidachi doesn't turn the blade then Shidachi could lock the sword and throw it over his head.
@Addokichi Interesting discussion - but I often think that uchidachi's actions don't have a real reason, just that the kata goes like that.
In the real world you'd be mad to react the way u.d. does- if you switch from kata to free sparring you never remain in the danger zone as long as u.d. does, making himself such a pushover. Of course he's destined to lose in the kata.
@Addokichi I couldn't agree more about the humility issue. For reference, the reason is you've lost your balance and you are now going to threaten the neck. When scooped properly the tachi goes horizontal, and the neck is the next logical target. This is the Fukuoka perspective...
