  • "yeah I've got like a kind of bass drummy thing there, and a thing there, and a thing there. I've got like a scratchy thing as well, so err what can you do?"

    -does insane shit-

    yeah.

  • maybe they told the crowd not to clap beacause newton deserves to be heard every single second

  • wow, he's really good

  • 2 people will fade away never known other than their dislike of the undislikable

  • 2 people must of been judging the crowd!

  • I don't like it (Not at all my style of music), but fuck me he's talented

  • this guy is cool....

  • its a tv show in australia with a studio audiance, so it would be filled, unless you meant shit as in theyre not gettin into it?

  • i love it! i love him!

  • Just to help with this percussive playing thing here, People like Michael Hedges and Preston Reed were some of the first people to start the percussive style of playing :)

  • At 0:36 hes like "damn. what a shit crowd"

  • Does anybody else think Ed Sheeran has taken the ginger song writer glory from Newton Faulkner? Don't get me wrong Ed Sheeran is a talented guy but in my eyes Newton is a million times better singer and guitarist. 'I Need Something' and 'Feels like home' are pure genius songs by Newton Faulkner!

  • He's pretty Epic!

  • :0 UAU

  • shit crowd

  • @Ccharlie666 sometimes at these kind of places, they dont allow the crowd to cheer, its pretty bullshit if you ask me :/

  • God, what a dead audience....

  • Newton kicks ass I love him so much hopefully he will release another album he's my all time favorite :) and agree ed sheeran sucks compared :)

  • I love how the public think Newton came up with that whole percussion thing when he just stole it from Eric Roche.

  • @Spudbass I think people know that the percussive playing on guitar has been around for a long time (before Eric Roche, even though he did develop it further, as other musicians before him had). Newton Faulkner did not steal anything from Eric, Eric was his teacher and I'm sure he would have been happy to see his success. This is a style of playing, open to anyone who wants to learn it.

  • @Spudbass there's nothing wrong with emulating other artists, I sometimes play in this percussive style. You wouldn't criticise someone for strumming a guitar because they didn't come up with it themselves.

  • @Spudbass

Eric Roche didn't invent it either? Before I'd even heard of any of them I always played with percussion..

  • I hate how good he is! Jokes I love Newton!!!!!!!

  • he is one of my favourite people, ever.

  • Unreal! Definitive UK genius! Get the fk off our tv's screens X factor and give Newton a slot. We need him back in the charts

  • God forbid if ed sheeran and newton faulkner were to play a duo song, both amazing guitarists n both show the power of gingers! :D

  • @uberdemonic Don't think you are a guitarist - nothing against Sheeran, but he's not even close to Newton's level of playing.

  • @uberdemonic Ed sheeran is good, but nothing compared to Newton Faulkner mate.

  • Just a genius........;)

  • newton should an album full of covers

  • Love how he says 'bad luck' at the beginning :)<3

  • This performance actually isn't that difficult. He doesn't sing while doing the percussion, which would be the hardest part - apart from some quick licks there's nothing that a decent guitarist can't do (after a few years of practice)

He's a great musician, don't get me wrong, but this is by far one of his more mediocre songs

  • @JackFrawley101 He say's at the end, I wanted to do Higher Ground because I actually new that. Which suggests he kind of put this together when he was back stage. Not any guitarist can play like he does, it would take a lot longer than just a few years of practice.

  • what tuning is he using?

  • @TheAquatramp I believe DADGAD but all down a half step to Db Ab Db Gb Ab Db, I believe

  • is there a tab for this?

  • god what the hell that was awesome

  • just capoed it n worked it out mainly, but does anyone know how he's making the scratchy sound in the intro? sounds like he's either scratching the strings with his right hand or a scratch board, but it doesn't look like he is. Looks like he's doing something with his left hand but that might be irrelevant, n trying to get the scratches on the strings feels a bit frantic and he looks pretty chilled playing it... guess that's why he's such a god among musicians!

  • @maverick040690 He's got a scratch board on his guitar I'm fairly certain, I've seen him talk about it before.

  • @Egoasm Yeah his scratch board is by the neck, but if you watch his right hand it doesn't seem to be going anywhere near it, which is what confused me. He might be scratching just the wood on a different part of his guitar but it doesn't look like he's doing that either...

  • @maverick040690 Are we on about 2 seconds into the video? When he produces the scratchy sound, I think it would be too coincidental for him not too be using the scratch board, it does sound spot on like it so I would imagine so. Camera angle's can be deceiving, just my in put.

  • @Egoasm Well spotted genious, he does explain that at the end of the vid, everything you just said didn't answer his question at all.

  • @lukebailey457 maverick asked how he produced the scratchy sound at the beginning, I answered with a scratch board, how is that not answering his question at all? It's how he produces the scratching sound.

All thought if you want too take a shot at answering the question instead of being a sarcastic cunt, go right ahead.

  • @lukebailey457 I'm no grammar nazi, but I do like how ironic it is that you miss spelt genius.

  • @Egoasm Oh dear have started a forum war rofls! Yeah is about 2 seconds in and it's true that it does sounds like the scratchboard. Just doesn't look like his fingers are anywhere near but that could be a trick of the camera! Gna have to make me one of those scratchboards :)

  • @maverick040690 Oh if you are on about 2 seconds in I would bet my life that it's the scratch board. I know it doesn't look like it but it is, just from the sound of it I'm 99.99% sure it is. I agree I gotta get myself one just to mess about with even if I can't weave it into a song lol.

  • trying to work this out. Has anyone either got a tab or know what tuning he's in? Cos I have a feeling his low e string is tuned up to an f

  • stevie wonder missed the like button.....not his fault though

  • tough crowd :S

  • omfg if i could be half as good in playing and singing in the same time i'd be more than happy !

  • Man this is an awesome video. So many styles displayed in one small piece of guitar. Nice!

  • SWEET AWESOME GREAT!!!!

  • I'm pretty sure the dislike was just Stevie Wonder trying to get the like button

  • @sixstringsod Awwwwwwww lol

  • why the fuck is the crowd just chillin?

  • Newton is the random dislike thinking "Damn, i forgot to brush my hair today!!" :P

  • amazing.....i jst wanna know whos that person who disliked this and im 95% sure that hes deaf..

  • 1 dislike...

some guy's got a bounty over his head :L

  • No dislikes, like it's meant to be.

  • you know something is good when nobody dislikes it.

  • Greatest man on Earth.

  • It's easy to getting so absorbed by the guitaring that you forget quite how amazing the vocal is - together it's just one on the most incredible live performances I've ever seen.

  • @dingbatthe1st - Totally agree with you. As much as I'd love to be able to play guitar like Mr. Faulkner, I'd like to able to sing like he can even more. He truly is one of the best live performers because of his skills, and the fact he can play guitar AND sing that well at the same time is truly incredible!

  • this video is prob my favorite on youtube

  • the mans a genious

  • Love his face while playing

  • WOOOOW!

  • I believe in Newton Faulkner.He's amazing ;-)

  • God sent me here...

  • 534 likes, 0 dislikes.

  • Sweet Jesus! He's incredible!

  • The whole wrold should know about and listen to this epic song :)

  • he's a legand

  • Wonder how he would have done on the X Factor?

  • @mick65wolf He wouldn't stoop so low -__-

  • I'd like to hear Ed Sheeran try this!

  • @dingbatthe1st So truee!

  • @dingbatthe1st I'd like to hear any mainstream artist try this

  • @TheLibraryofBooks Newton Faulkner is a mainstream artist ;)

  • @162sparky HEATHEN!!!!!!

  • Shh crowd! Ruining the best 9 seconds my ear drums will hear...

  • he is good....

  • What guitar is this?

  • @The86770 it's a jumbo orchestral model, build by Nick Benjamin in Lewes, nr Brighton.

  • He looks like John Butlers big bro!

    That would be so awesooooooommmmeeee......

  • @RonaldinhoReborn actually, he's 10 years younger than John Butler - Newton is only 26.

  • If you look up perfection in the dictionary, they have a picture of Newton Faulkner.

  • How did Stevie Wonder find the dislike button?

  • I would like to see him and John Butler play a song together... so epic.

  • God was busy, so newton stepped in...

  • @mintedbiscuit

newton was busy so god stepped in ;)

  • Thumbs if you think he should do a full cover of this song! Amazing! :)

  • Comment removed

  • 1 person is superstitious

  • this guy's sick, insanely talented!! not to mention a sexy voice I must say ;)

  • i love him for playing Boom Boom Boom by John Lee Hocker in the end. :D

  • The ONE difference (besides the hair) between Newton and John Mayor is that John Mayor is a cocky shit and shows off all the time, though who can blame him?

I think Newton is just as good as John Mayor and the fact he's so down to earth and hardly shows off makes him so much better than Mayor by far!

  • One of the main reasons I prefer this version is that cheeky smile at 1:15 :D Newton's just a musical genius, if i played solidly for a month I MAY be able to play the song half as well as that... then he starts singing. Such a rare talent right there.

  • @sk8rfella just realised I typed "month" instead of "year" :s

  • who the fuck disliked this?

  • lol, guy in the background bobbing his head :P

  • i came 4 times, died, came back to life at 0:55 and died again, then brought back with super powers at 2:32

  • SHOW OFF!!! but i wld be too if i cld play like tht lol

  • awesome stuff but i prefer Adam Rafferty's arrangement

  • @mutley2209 how can you campare them, adams is an instrumental version of the song

  • @AcousticNugeman both are, no reason why you couldn't sing to adam's arrangement which if you did would do it more justice, personally i like both but prefer adam's

  • every time i watch him i fall in love a lil bit more

  • Warning: this video contains indescribable amounts of epicness.

  • I just want his playing skills ...

  • looks like a yeti but that dont stop his skill

  • Gotta love how he shows off at the end :D

"I've got a bass thing, a thing here and thingy and a scratchy thing... uhh

    *does insaaaane shit*

    yea..."

  • crazy eyess

  • There is always one bell end that has to dislike a video

  • I swear he's a messenger of the FSM with his hair

  • *Tries to high 5 newton through laptop screen!

  • awesome

  • hes f******g awesome.

  • oh hell yeah boi!

  • his eyeballs are massssive

  • OMG !!!!! This man is Amazing !!

  • saw him in manchester earlier this year. a flawless performer and a bloody nice fellow. also one of the most talented humans to have ever graced god's green earth. god bless newton, and god bless all those who realise what a gem he is.

    peace. x

(p.s. check out Charlotte O' Connor. she was his openning act. amazing singer and very easy on the eyes)

  • @MattyLeeschl0ng1990 , i couldn't agree more newton is the most talented semi/acoustic guitarist EVER! i dont think there is any one who comes close to what he can do with a mic an amp and a semi-acoustic guitar, and i dont think there ever will be!!!, my fav giutar player alive today!, but the main man of electric guitar was and still is in my eye's the master JIMMY HENDRIX, a man way ahead of his time, god how i wish he was still alive today R.I.P JIMMY HENDRIX yo will live on through ur music

  • @JCQBNo1 if newton and willy watson from ocms teamed up. wow

  • @JCQBNo1 Don't get me wrong. I love Newton Faulkner. He's really great, but of course he's not the first person using this technique. Originally he got it from his mentor. His mentors name was (he's dead now) Eric Roche. Newton used the Roches Technique and added Vocals and more actual guitar playing to it. So....There was a musician who came close to Mr. Faulkner. Sadly there are no other players like Newton. Atleast I couldn't find them. Eric Roche: /watch?v=SdcQyOEnHv8&feature=related

  • @bamsarp

Agree Percussion on the guitar is far from a new thing, Paulo Bellinati, Alberto Ginastera, Philippe Cauvin all wrote pieces using it long before Roche even came on the scene. Percussion isn’t really that hard Falkner does do it very well, he just makes it look easy so to speak. There are very few people who have the voice and playing ability does.

  • @DCTheGuitarist

Oh I didn't know about the others, but I actually think it is a hard to play using percussion. You need a really good feeling for rythm. Maybe you can do percussion, I can't do it at all.

  • @bamsarp

I don't really play that sort of stuff, but like anything slow it down practise. Something like Rocktypicovin by Cauvin use’s percussion less as a nucleus to a song or piece which in some ways makes it harder to get into a groove, and suddenly playing something very specific having to hope you hands about where Jongo buy Paulo Bellinati, use’s it as a solo, but they are both unlike the Roche style in approach.

  • @JCQBNo1 you'd like John Butler, then.

  • that last percussive thing is just sex in acoustic!!

  • good christ thats awesome

  • Ummmmmm...WOW

  • Bloody hell newton! I'd give anything to be that skilled.

  • Awesome Cole Clark guitar... brother has one.

  • @tommotarn actually the guitar is a Nick Bejamin Jumbo Orchestral - built in Lews nr Brighton.

  • @dingbatthe1st good call, 1st look n sound very similar .

  • @tommotarn It's a Benjamin guitar actually

  • the kind of guitar he uses cost 3grand a pop... and i want one

  • does any1 wanna hazard a guess to when his last haircut was?
