Aren't these all just generic, quirky indie, love films that just need to be turned up a bit because the main actors are so awkward? Hence the mumbling.
Haha, just kidding. Don't get your ironic t-shirt in a bunch. But in reality I am kinda tired of quirky love films and Mumblecore seems to be a lot of that...
@Gmancrap I agree. I like the idea of these films being inexpensive and easy to make. I DON'T like the idea of sappy (and forced) awkwardness going hand in hand with independent film making. You can make slice of life crap a little more dynamic than just a bunch of hipster prattle.
seriously, this horseshit film movement is a stillbirth. much like anything done by hipsters, it is nothing more than for the sake of doing something not because it will be good, but simply doing it because they think it hasn't been done before, learning nothing from previous generations.
@jpcabad not so much really... I think is better to call it a Slacker movie. It's pretty much the same thing as mumblecore but in the 90's. The name started because of Linklater's first film "Slacker".
wait greta's not a mumblecore filmmaker she's the mumblecore it actress and star just like jolie of hollywood. anyway she's a traitor now. no more mumblecore for her instead she's doiing high end indie now. 1st being the one with ben stiller
I still think that there should be some measure of importance put on entertaining people as well.
A lot of what I saw in this short was self-important and took itself very seriously, but there didn't seem to be much priority on making something actually entertaining or you know....fun.
I know it's not hipster and nihilistic to have fun...unless it's ironic, but not everyone can relate to love triangle type stuff like the director said.
Anyways, I never said I was a Puritan or something, I just haven't had many akward, confused, and dissonant relationships in my life like you see in these movies, so I have a hard time relating.
I don't have an issue with indie films and indeed haven't seen much mumblecore material, so maybe my impression isn't totally filled out, however from what I did see, it just seemed very self righteous.
But to me, depressing doesn't automatically equal quality in art.
hey it's your freedom to state your opinions. i accept it but lots of folks can't accept opinions opposite of their own. i'm not like that. i've always been an indie freak. whether it's music or films. i love high end indie fims too not just mumblecore. i like everything indie. i despise major studio films though. avatar is the most overrated piece of crap ever existed. wasted 15 bucks watching the 3d version. despise straight to dvd stuff, tv movies and b movies though.
@ConfusedSponge: Well hey man, I'm glad you're able to accpet my opinion, and I don't have a problem with your tastes either.
I've seen good indie stuff, good mainstream, crap and quality can come from all places, but to me, as long as there's something about the art that you can recognize as quality and enjoyable, it can be good to you.
I'm all about being able to separate fun from technical parts of filmmaking and respect each as equally important.
@WarriorBoy this isn't art. it's essentially those calvin klein/jordasche/guess jeans commercials from the early 90s except in color and longer than 30 seconds
well, I wish I could relate more to Transformers or Step Up, but I cant. Therefore I watch movies such as the mumblecore genre to feel some sort of connection, as if its my life on film even if my life does suck. If its not for you, its not for you.
they dont seem to get much theatrical release, but you can find most on dvd. im a big fan of the Duplass brothers work, " the puffy chair" & "baghead".
awesome, ill try and buy them. they seem like great films. actually, the puffy chair was played in melbourne recently but i didnt know about it until it was over,
I watched maybe 15 or 20 minutes of the mumblecore movie titled "LOL". Both my boyfriend and I hated it. I'd love to watch some amazing mumblecore films, but have no idea what to look for. Maybe it's just not the genre for me.
Likewise, even when faced the type of abrasively cynical banter some of the previous posts were, they'd be better off admitting that even if it's not their thing, they can't deny that it has an audience, and will attract, at least, the less judgmental and more open-minded.
Thank god they invented a TERM for movies like this so I can look at the tags/description and know I will not waste my time on a shitty film when I just avoid anything associated with the term "mumblecore"
So where did the term mumblecore come from? Did it originate because the movie is composed entirely of scenes of people *mumbling* about their feelings for each other? These movies must have quite a lot of backstory and character development, or else no one is going to care when two characters start mumbling about "are we ready yet..."
it comes from an audio guy who worked on one the films. at a bar at SXSW, he matter of factly called it a 'mumblecore type of film' because he couldnt hear half the crap actors were saying.

It's pretentious and boring. I wish people would make films about thing other then quirky, middle class, white kids who fall in love.

hmm that figures. mumblecore filmmaker swanberg put a lot of nudity and sex in his films. you don't like sex? you must be if you hate romance.
