Thanks for posting this. I was there and it was a lot of fun to be a part of that.
My wife commented on how everything started to sound better when he had people thinking about different elements of the excerpt (emphasizing the downbeat, thinking of the bigger phrase, etc.) It sounded less like Elmer Fudd and more like Richard Wagner.
Yes, isn't it great how Pokorny can do so much with a phrase? His musicality and phrasing are always fresh and inspirational.
And and top of being a wonderful musician and top-notch tubist/tubaist, he's such a likable human being. His humour and good nature make him all the more awesome!
my goodness, there a a few tubas there that are much too blatty sounding. If you listen to gene pokorny with CSO you can tell he has a very round sound and good tone throughout all registers.
His name is Bernard Flythe, and he's not teaching at a University at the moment, but he was teaching at Austin P. and is a graduate of University of Michigan. He also made it to the final round of the Ney York Philharmonic auditions...the only person to beat him was Alan Baer.
Okay...a little misinformation here. It turns out that the guy I thought was my teacher was actually a dude he went to school with that looks exactly like him...wierd I know. The other part is also incorrect. I was told by one of my mother's friends (who got me interested in taking lessons with Bernard) told me he made the final round of the New York Philharmonic when he really didn't make it past the first round. Just wanted to clear that up before it came back to bite anybody in the ass.
That is the lowest note, but if you take the average note of tonality it would be F#, since there are more F#s. That E is played as a false tone by Porkony
However, since its in B major, the average mean low note is the dominant of B major, which is F#, there are more F#1 than E1, but yes to be an asshole the lowest note is E
Dude, this is just pure awesomenest. Gene Pokorny is one of my hero's and you got to meet him....GRR! Man your so lucky man, and this is a nice vid. 5 stars!
AHAHA :] mm my middle school ensemble was very lucky to have a clinic with mr. porkorny, he played a solo piece for us then talked about all this stoof :]. he played with our tuba section, It was amazing because he was sitting right in front of me [first chair clari :)], he went to school with one of our english teachers. great tubist :].
love Gene Pokorny

I could have sworn the black dude next to Mike Forbes was one of his students...I could be wrong, though.

I have no clue...you're probably right.

based in the notes on the overhead, their really low!
its weird i can play high notes really well but i dont have a good ear for low notes!
bryson112 4 years ago
the range is from a low f sharp (4th ledger line down) to a b natural (2nd line on the staff)
Its in B major, not for the whole song duh, but just for this chunk.
gaoliefreak 4 years ago
The range is actually from a low E (5th ledger line down) not an f#

i stand corrected :P

some body send me that sheet music
ilikepie456 4 years ago
its around a low F#. The excerpt being in B major makes it difficult, but there are parts that go above the low B natural
drxtuba 4 years ago
That would be a low E...5th ledger line down.

It's a written 5th ledgerline E... I know. I've worked on the excerpt for my college auditions and made it into Eastman with it...

I didn't mean an asshole...I just misunderstood the meaning of your statement...my appologies.

come on. we're all low brass. Be a brother and join ITEA if you haven't already.

What do you mean false tone? You can see him put down 2 3 and 4 when playing it.
