@drbob....yes, I think you're right. Perhaps it's possible that the sinking of the JH Jones was inspiration for this song. But the song is absolutely about the " old-timer"on the deck watching the loss of the "youngster". It's a tragic and beautiful song. I love the way he describes the ship (like a great dog, she shook herself)....and the storm (so fast it seems enchanted).
@Moonchalice I'd assumed that someone just figured the song would go well with the images of the disaster, even though they don't describe the same event.
dude i had to do this song for a poem in english but my grandma used to play this song all the time when i was little! I REMEBER IT HAHAHAH sorry i feel awesome right now
I think the description for this song ("White Squall") is incorrect. It really appears to describe the sweeping overboard of a deckhand on a Great Lakes ore ship (likely carrying iron ore) during a sudden violent storm (these storms are common on the Great Lakes). Since the song is in the first person, the "author" obviously survives (unlikely in a sudden sinking of one of these huge ships).
@drbob3 ohh dont underestimate the lakes--they have squalls too--ive seen waterspouts and many other phenomenon on the lakes that scare seasoned ocean captains...
....the description is for the video... it seemed a fitting song to use as soundtrack..... and, I love Stan Rogers.... nothing more intended then to tell two stories in one vid.....
@drbob3 A White Squall, an anomoly, no one has actually ever seen one. Even the knockdown that the Albatross(movie White Squall), suffered in the Gulf of Mexico was most probably not a White Squall per say. Her sinking was probably incorrectly potrayed in the film. She was gone in under a minute. Suggesting she opened up down the middle due to the removal of structural bulkheads to accomodate more living space in a previous refit by Capt. Sheldon.
This is a beautiful song,I love all of Stan's songs, because each song tells a story!! May he rest in Peace..My son in Nova Scotia got me into listening to his songs.. God Bless you Gary!!
I understand your opinion, though disagree strongly. But if this music is not something you enjoy then I must ask, why do you have to comment? A decent debate is more acceptable, but a plain insult makes no sense, and makes you look like an ass. (no offence intended).
But that aside, in my opinion this is great. One of Stan's best.
