  • @MisSty2589 I can't see Kiri

  • @thomastmwc I think she's the one left to Gardiner, with a red dress...

  • @MisSty2589 at which time exactly is it? Ladies in red/reddish dress are Roberta Peters, Birgit Nilsson, Berverly Sills (behind Roberta).

    Really, I can't see Sutherland :(

    Thanks :)!!

  • @thomastmwc Sutherland was not there in the evening. She sang in the afternoon and went home. Beverly Sills was not there. She had retired by that time and wasn't to my knowledge even at the performance.

  • What a GROUP! It was fun watching this marvelous group of vocal artists just smiling and singing for a change. However, I've listened to it numerous times trying to figure out who it was with the HIGH note that lasted just a tad longer than most, and if you look very carefully, you can see Roberta Peters ...I believe she outlasted everyone, especially my favorite, Anna Moffo...who was not even trying on this...just enjoying...1983...no cancer yet, I believe. Peters in bright red, front.

  • Leontyne price, James Levine, Birgit Nillson, Kraus, domingo, And Sills

  • I JUST LOVE IT SO MUCH !!!!!!!!!!!

  • Just lovely...but sad when you realize

how few are still alive. Thank god we

have video. Great post! Thank you.

  • I can name most of them....I think we all can if we use the brain power.

    Great post.

I find it amusing and amazing how Roberta Peters and Anna Moffo keep looking at each other. It is like they are still in there 20's and in competition for the high notes.

    Brent

  • That was not a high C, that sounded like either a B natural or B flat to me lol! Still, it was a hot post. I like this alot ;)

  • @Tenortone21 it was a C

  • Voilà un précieux document !!!

    Merci et félicitations SueAnnNivens .

  • @LordMgls With hidden Pav

  • When giants walked the earth.

  • my god!! The voice u can iddentify quicklyier is Alfredo kraus' one! Amazing!!

  • Notice how the ones who didn't have anything to prove(so to speak) "weren't" singing the high C! Pavarotti, Nilson, Price...lol

  • Sure, especially when it takes SO much effort ! Let the ones to whom it costs nothing sing the C ...

  • Wow...thanks for sharing....it's sad...this was an era at the Met we'll never see again. We're in 2010 now, all the good singers are "fading". Placido Domingo sings but it's not the same as in his hey day. Nilsson is dead, Moffo is dead, Battle does not sing as much and Price doesn't either (she's retired). This is a lovely treat.

  • Funny, the only ones singing high c's at the end ( it seemed like) were Catherine Malfatano and Alfredo Kraus!

  • That´s right!!!! Alfredo Kraus. The supreme prince of singing giving the entire theatre and other artist a lesson of how to end a real Gala.

  • I left out Jerome Hines. In the later shop (around 52", Moffo, and Lucine Amara Merrill have moved next to Nilsson. Behind and to the right of Nilsson is Ermanno Mauro.

  • I went a bit crazy typing. It should read, "in the later shot (around 52") Moffo, Merrill and Lucine Amara have moved next to Nilsson.

  • Moser was there too wasn't she? Not that i can spot her....

  • Crespin, Mme. X, (Bumbry?), Von Stade, Marton, Betsy Norden, Julien Robbins, Christian Boesch, Soderstrom, Asst. Cond. Bill Vendice, Battle, Jeffrey Tate, Blegen, Freni, Domingo, Isola Jones, Shirley Love, Velis, Malfitano, Kraus, Loretta DiFranco, Peters, Levine, Giuliano Ciannella, Nilsson, Tim Jenkins, Price, Pavarotti, Ghiaurov. In the large shot, Horne is in light blue. Joan went home and rested (she had "Fille" on Monday).. Pllishka is behind Luciano.

  • Is Joan here?

  • Is it me or is Jose Carreras MIA?

  • MIA? What does that mean?

  • Missing In Action.

  • Missing In Action. (not there)

  • too bad callas and sutherlang wasnt in this video...callas died too early and sutherland sang too early on that day...it wouldve been nice to see them with the other singers..

  • si sentono distintamente Domingo e Kraus! (miticissimo il suo Do!!!!)

  • That high C by Kraus was spot-on beautiful!!!!!!

  • yeah i could hear kraus over everyone! he owns, perfect technique, sings differently than any other voice on that stage!

  • I agree as I put up there somewhere in a comment, that was a brillian lesson of how to end a Gala.

  • Too sad that the Queen of the Opera of all times is not there ... She will be remembered for ever.

    Maria Callas 1923 - 1977

  • Gente, o Domingo era gostoso, hein?

  • Comment removed

  • Lol at 0:43 the great Ms. Price wines with her chest voice! and kraus is just the best...

  • What's kind of sad is to name all the people who performed at the Centennial Gala that stage who are no longer with us - Pavarotti, Ghaiurov, Cianella, Nilsson, Kraus, Hines, Moffo, Thomas, McCracken, Stewart, Crespin, Bernstein, Pritchard, Stivender, Merrill, Alexander, and almost all of the honored guests sitting on the stage (Bampton, Berger, Carlisle, Kirsten, Novotna, Sayao, Steber, Alvary, Carelli, Cassel, Tagliavini, Uppman, Valletti, Vinay)

  • 2008 was the 125 the anniversary of the Met but it was very different from this one. I don't think there will ever be an assemblage of such great voices again.

  • Sutherland is not there -She sang in the afternoon part of the concert-This is the finale of the evening section.

Frederica von Stade ,Kathleen Battle, Edda Moser, Judith Blegen,Mirella Freni, Eva Marton, Leontyne Price, Birgit Nillson, Anna Moffo. Roberta Peters, Grace Bumbry,Catherina Malfitano.Marilyn Horne,to name a few....

  • Who are the two small frames sopranoes next to Levine, white dress and burgubdy dress, obviously elated at having nailed the high C?

  • I think you're referring to Roberta Peters and Loretta DiFranco.

  • Great Kraus, right on the C. Whose birthday was this? And what year?

  • Kraus nailed the C, yes. They may have been singing happy birthday to the Met as it was it's Centennial? And it was 1983.

  • what? pavarotti did not sing the high C at the end, It was kraus, take a look and see Luciano´s mouth, It was well closed, when Kraus sings a high note there is no need to sing then, we have enough with kraus´s tecnique in my opinion.

  • where is Joan Sutherland and Pavarotti? maybe Corelli had already retired.

  • Pavarotti is visible around 27 seconds, standing near Leontyne Price. Sutherland isn't there, had she been, you'd have been able to spot her from the very back of the hall. She was wearing a very... 'Unique' dress.

  • You can say that again! It would've been awesome to have her there, and just hear her high C over everybody elses'. I wonder if she could've been able to do that, come to think of it?

  • What year was this? I swear that sounds like Joan Sutherland singing that final high note, but I dont see her anywhere.

  • 81 or 82.

  • you can hear kraus sin

    ging

  • Thank you for sharing this gem!

  • Which one is te kanawa? I didn't catch her. I'm a kiri fan...lol.

  • All great great singers, Kraus ....to yooooou!!

  • MPearl8-I am sure they've enjoyed singing it off pitch and out of tune for a change! :)

  • JuillHope17--That was a priceless comment! LoL..I love it.

  • omg, wouldn't that be terrible if the roof collapsed and a whole generation of singers went pft! gone.

  • Great singers..but they seem out of tune singing the happy birthday song.

  • Wow, best singers of 20th century's last quarter. I can hear Alfredo Kraus great high C at the end :)

  • you're right, that was Kraus!

  • some people said it was luciano, jejee not a chance for him when the maestro kraus was around.

  • so funny!

    great!...

  • i would drop dead if all those wonderful singers sang me happy birthday

  • haha all of the soprano's and tenors were like *HIGH C* on "you" but the baritones and mezzos/contraltos were all *HIGH- oh fuckit, regular C* on "you" lol.

  • LOL!!!!!!!!

  • so funny.

  • Wow, look at Alfredo Kraus when he hits the C on 'yooooou'. Talk about placement.

  • When It comes to talk about high notes and voice placement, we are all better off keeping quite and letting kraus instruct us, he was out of this world, and so He is now, singing to God knows who to. Kraus thank you very much for your art. You were a gentleman and a fanstastic opera interpreter. Thanks for ever.

  • Here goes:

Anna Tomowa Sintow, Frederica von Stade,Eva Marton,Elizabeth Soderstrom,Kathleen Battle,

    Judith Blegen,Mirella Freni,Placido Domingo,

Catherine Malfitano, Alfredo Kraus, Roberta Peters, James Levine, Birgit Nilsson,Leontyne Price, Louis Quilico,Luciano Pavarotti,Nicolai Ghiarov. At the end, from a distance you can see Marliyn Horne, Robert Merill and Lucine Amara.

  • Between Sintow and vonStade is Ileana Cotrubas. Behind Placido is Isola Jones. Between Kraus and Peters is Loretta di Franco. Behind Peters is Giuliano Ciannella. From afar you can also catch a glipse of Grace Bumbry(next to Ghiarov), Leona Mitchell and Edda Moser. Right before the high note, Anna Moffo is standing next to Nilsson. You can see much more detail on the dvd of course :)

  • We are a good team!

I just looked again and I saw

the conducter Jeffrey Tate and bass Paul Plishka.

  • It was a great excuse to pop that DVD once more and revisit those great performances. :) Good times. Happy Holidays!
