@thomastmwc Sutherland was not there in the evening. She sang in the afternoon and went home. Beverly Sills was not there. She had retired by that time and wasn't to my knowledge even at the performance.
What a GROUP! It was fun watching this marvelous group of vocal artists just smiling and singing for a change. However, I've listened to it numerous times trying to figure out who it was with the HIGH note that lasted just a tad longer than most, and if you look very carefully, you can see Roberta Peters ...I believe she outlasted everyone, especially my favorite, Anna Moffo...who was not even trying on this...just enjoying...1983...no cancer yet, I believe. Peters in bright red, front.
i saw Jerome Hines, Pavarotti, i think i saw Plishka as well.. Nicolai Giaurov, Kraus (of course), Plácido Domingo (so young, indeed) and Isola jones.. sadly i do not know the rest of them... amazing!!!!
I can name most of them....I think we all can if we use the brain power.
Great post.
I find it amusing and amazing how Roberta Peters and Anna Moffo keep looking at each other. It is like they are still in there 20's and in competition for the high notes.
Wow...thanks for sharing....it's sad...this was an era at the Met we'll never see again. We're in 2010 now, all the good singers are "fading". Placido Domingo sings but it's not the same as in his hey day. Nilsson is dead, Moffo is dead, Battle does not sing as much and Price doesn't either (she's retired). This is a lovely treat.
I left out Jerome Hines. In the later shop (around 52", Moffo, and Lucine Amara Merrill have moved next to Nilsson. Behind and to the right of Nilsson is Ermanno Mauro.
Crespin, Mme. X, (Bumbry?), Von Stade, Marton, Betsy Norden, Julien Robbins, Christian Boesch, Soderstrom, Asst. Cond. Bill Vendice, Battle, Jeffrey Tate, Blegen, Freni, Domingo, Isola Jones, Shirley Love, Velis, Malfitano, Kraus, Loretta DiFranco, Peters, Levine, Giuliano Ciannella, Nilsson, Tim Jenkins, Price, Pavarotti, Ghiaurov. In the large shot, Horne is in light blue. Joan went home and rested (she had "Fille" on Monday).. Pllishka is behind Luciano.
too bad callas and sutherlang wasnt in this video...callas died too early and sutherland sang too early on that day...it wouldve been nice to see them with the other singers..
What's kind of sad is to name all the people who performed at the Centennial Gala that stage who are no longer with us - Pavarotti, Ghaiurov, Cianella, Nilsson, Kraus, Hines, Moffo, Thomas, McCracken, Stewart, Crespin, Bernstein, Pritchard, Stivender, Merrill, Alexander, and almost all of the honored guests sitting on the stage (Bampton, Berger, Carlisle, Kirsten, Novotna, Sayao, Steber, Alvary, Carelli, Cassel, Tagliavini, Uppman, Valletti, Vinay)
2008 was the 125 the anniversary of the Met but it was very different from this one. I don't think there will ever be an assemblage of such great voices again.
Sutherland is not there -She sang in the afternoon part of the concert-This is the finale of the evening section.
Frederica von Stade ,Kathleen Battle, Edda Moser, Judith Blegen,Mirella Freni, Eva Marton, Leontyne Price, Birgit Nillson, Anna Moffo. Roberta Peters, Grace Bumbry,Catherina Malfitano.Marilyn Horne,to name a few....
what? pavarotti did not sing the high C at the end, It was kraus, take a look and see Luciano´s mouth, It was well closed, when Kraus sings a high note there is no need to sing then, we have enough with kraus´s tecnique in my opinion.
Pavarotti is visible around 27 seconds, standing near Leontyne Price. Sutherland isn't there, had she been, you'd have been able to spot her from the very back of the hall. She was wearing a very... 'Unique' dress.
You can say that again! It would've been awesome to have her there, and just hear her high C over everybody elses'. I wonder if she could've been able to do that, come to think of it?
haha all of the soprano's and tenors were like *HIGH C* on "you" but the baritones and mezzos/contraltos were all *HIGH- oh fuckit, regular C* on "you" lol.

That´s right!!!! Alfredo Kraus. The supreme prince of singing giving the entire theatre and other artist a lesson of how to end a real Gala.
